  • Hope this lives up to your wishes Bradiel!
Disclaimer I was made aware that Jaime refers to themselves with they/them pronouns so please forgive my misuse in this video. Certainly not intention!
I had a fun enough time with this project and can appreciate it for setting out to deliver on a certain feeling and accomplishing that. Ultimately, this album is likely not for everyone and will be a matter of preference, but giving it a shot is worth the time.

I really hope Xiu Xiu gets more attention and appreciation with Brad’s recent homework assignment. One of my favorite bands of all time, they’re a band that makes music that’s pure raw emotion (most of the time to an uncomfortable degree).

I certainly agree with both your points! I think a lot of the reason I even cover music is to just hopefully expose more listeners to stuff they normally wouldn't entertain. Also, there is something powerful about being able to make a listener truly discomforted only through music with no visual component!

As a Charli XCX fan and a Xiu Xiu fan I am very happy to see this reaction but I don’t know why Brad chose this as people’s introduction to Xiu Xiu other than shock factor. This is there most experimental work (not including projects found on Xiu Xiu bandcamp) and I believe this project was the product of almost two decades of the band’s experimentation. Without that context of their sound throughout the years and knowing how to uncover the themes in their works their is a huge barrier the listener has to go over in order to appreciate the artistry that can be found on the album. I’m glad you were still able to find some appreciation to such a foreign sound.

This is definitely a sentiment I have seen from many telling me their other works are a little more approachable. Like you noted though I was thankfully able to pull a great amount of appreciation from this record and plan on checking out more in the future!

Some notes I thought of while watching the video: (I did this for like 30 minutes, but then I accidentally closed out of this tab, so everything got deleted. The first couple of notes are rewritten from memory.)
Idk why Brad chose this album of all the Xiu Xiu albums to give an 100 to.
I personally wouldn't have this be your introduction to the band, since this is their most messed up and experimental album.
    Jamie Stewart uses they/them pronouns.
I'd recommend using Genius and Jamie's drunk commentaries for the meanings behind the songs since Xiu Xiu usually uses very abstract lyrics.
Amargi ve Moo is one of the more personal songs on the album, being about Jamie's sister who has cancer. (I think she's still alive though.)
    Jake, go eat.
Ice Cream Truck is one of the more underrated songs on the album in my opinion, as well as being one of the most messed up and depressing songs.
You laughing kinda proves Jamie's point made with the "It comes out as a joke" line, as though the album is very sad and soulcrushing, there are a lot of lines and moments in the songs that may ruin people's attachment and enjoyment with the songs, or make them feel like the songs aren't taken as seriously as they should be.
I originally went on like a 5 paragraph rant about Pumpkin Attack, but I'll just leave it at this: It's still an amazing song, but it is not one of the best on the album in my opinion.
    I love caterpillars.
You like the softer vocals and instruments, huh? I'm excited to see your reaction to Normal Love.
Does it feel slow in a good way or a bad w- OH NO! NOT THIS SONG!
For a song that made me cry on first listen, you took it surprisingly well. (Of course, it's probably because I knew going into it that it was based on a very true, very sad, very haunting story.)
"Is this everything that they do?" Not quite, but also... kind of? This album is more experimental art pop, but they also have more more "synth punk" sounding stuff like on Knife Play and A Promise. But yes, most, if not debatably all their music does sound very experimental and depressing.
Wait, the background moves?! Also, it looks oddly AI generated.
I'm glad you tried out something you wouldn't normally listen to, even if it wasn't your favorite thing in the world!
That's all I really have to say. Bye bye!!!! I hope I catch your next stream!!!

Thank you for correcting me on the pronouns! I usually use they/them as a default most of the time and surprised I didn't do that here! Will definitely be making note of that in the description!
I can report I did go eat after this! I really appreciate your write up and took the time to read it all, I will definitely at some point be getting around to more of them!
The background is some classic non-licenses stock footage XD I need to get a wider array, but I also feel the mushrooms fit my "vibe" XD.

Nice react man a great band but often their stuff is too weird for me. Love pumpkin attack and normal love from this album though. Would recommend their version of the song "falling" from the twin peaks album they did. In fact thst album generally is great i think still experimental but a lot less crazy that this one lol.

Mary Turner Mary Turner made me so so upset but in a good way. Its a super fucked up and real thing. Anyway, really good review! I will say Xiu Xiu does many different things but it all centers around an experimental and unconventional sound. I recommend their album A Promise if you wanna hear a different side to them. Granted Ive only listen to this album and A Promise
