In the case of the Challenger 2, new gun barrels for the L30 gun haven't been produced since 2004. In addition according to a document from the Forecast International, the HESH round has been out of production in the U.K. for years, current supplies are increasingly limited, while for the APFSDS round the only facility for producing the DU penetrators in the U.K. has already closed. It seems that the UK is planning to spend their entire reverse of L30 ammo in Ukraine, then be done with it and completely change to the German RH-120 with the introduction of the Challenger 3.
@@levilastun829 Yes very selective. But you forgot that Rheinmetall still manufacture 120mm (HESH) rounds in addition to armour-piercing fin-stabilized discarding-sabot (APFSDS) rounds for the rifled guns used on the Challenger 2. Changing to smoothbore makes new purchases cheaper and it allows the clearout of old ammunition for the rifled gun. @@1chish Rheinmetall doesn't produce ammo for the Challenger 2 L30 gun, the recent orders for ammo by the British were for the Challenger 3 Rh-120 gun. Actually the tanks of NATO were designed to primarily fight on the plains of West Germany destroying the Soviet armour which would outnumber NATO armour if WW3 had ever broken out. In the Cold War they designed to move into position. Wait and with their thick armour and accurate guns hit advancing Soviet units. NATO knew it would have to hold back a full Warsaw Pact attack until reinforcements of men and equipment could arrive from further back in Europe and across the Atlantic from the USA and Canada. This was part of the reason for NATO always having large naval forces that could protect ships bringing forces across. Same as in WW2 where the Allied navies protected convoys and destroyed the German U boats.
really? Designed to attack you think? Based on what? For the past 70 years NATO doctrine has been one of trying to achieve a high kill ratio against warsaw pact armour during the DEFENCE of West Germany. No one has been planning to go rolling over the russian steppes en route to moscow - despite the kremlin's propaganda.

The Challenger actually has a range of ammunition designed for different targets, but it sounds as if this tank has only HESH rounds, and they've been told to use them only against heavy armour, whereas it's highly effective against any sort of hardened target. The restriction is probably a tactical choice - a Challenger can be almost guaranteed to hit and destroy its target, so best to keep it for the most difficult to destroy - heavy armour.
@@cacwgmNo, the English translation is a bit off. What he actually says is that they have a variety of ammunition, but whatever they have for buildings and entrenched infantry is significantly less effective than the Soviet counterpart for the same targets. It's not the case that they are being told and therefore don't know that the rounds are actually highly effective, he is saying the decision was made based on experience (including his own). UK needs to make the Ammo for the 120mm rifled barrel, we have quite a few challenger two’s around. Whoever made the decision to stop has been dramatically proved wrong.
It’s the inability to fire the APFSDS and limitations to interoperability (ammo sharing) with NATO nations that’s led to the barrel change. You probably know that, so this is for those who don’t
@@danielmartin7838 It can fire APFSDS, but it's custom built for the L30A1, so that the eggs is _not_ spun by the rifling. Unfortunately because it's two piece ammo it puts a hard limit on dart length which limits max penetration.

The Challenger even sounds British. That’s awesome.
Hi guys! I love your channel and your fantastic country! It would be interesting to see a feature about the legendary AZOV Battalion......Massive respect and peace from the Republic of Ireland....Slava Ukraina....🇮🇪🍻🇺🇦👍

It can fire APFSDS, but it's custom built for the L30A1, so that the eggs is _not_ spun by the rifling. Unfortunately because it's two piece ammo it puts a hard limit on dart length which limits max penetration.
