Hanumatodi/Todi's ( its 'Janatodi' in Dikshitar school of Music) equivalent in Hindustani is called as Bhairavi-Thaat.( of course, the Todi-Thatt of Hindustani Music is entirely different, which is actually the ' SubhaPanthuvaraali'/45th Melakarta in carnatic music ). Todi is the shuddha madhyamam equivalent of Bhavapriya which is the 44th melakarta scale. A peculiarity of this ragam is that it is sung in all lower notes. The recently listened Todi, the 8th melakarta ragam is the monumental kriti of Pallavi Gopala Ayyar, .....'Amba Nadu Vinnapamu Vini', sung by the great maestro Guru Musiri Subramania Iyer.
Here the Dasettan's rendition of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal kriti - 'sarasijanaabha muraare paahi satatam shamalaadri kulisha shaure' just by a humming....thats is enough to get the flavor of Todi almost like a brief regaalapanam! His bhava-laden renditions with the perfect diction of Anupallavi and Charanam is so amazing ...., excellent niraval with "muravaarida sameera mohana mani-bhusha / Charanam 1 n then the beautifully proliferated kalpanasworms linking the phrases matching the rhythmic thala cycle. Meaning :- Oh SARASIJANABHA! The vanquisher of the demon MURA, protect me. You are KULISA-battle axe to the mountain of sins. SAURE! please protect me always.
You adore SANKHA-a conch, CAKRA-a discus, GADA-a mace and AMBUJA-lotus, in your hands. Oh the consort of BHUDEVI and RAMADEVI! You dwell amidst the Ocean and bestow joy on your devotees.
You allay the fear of celestials and sages.Your lips are soft and red. Your gaze is brimming with supreme and infinite kindness. You are to MURA what the winds are to clouds. You are adorned with resplendent ornaments. Your feet are the joy of INDRA and others.
Your garments shine like gold; you relieved the miseries of PANDAVAs who were troubled by KAURAVAs. You have a visage like the lord of stars- the Moon. Oh the progenitor of Cupid! you amused yourself in the MADHUVANA. Your feet are like the red roses. Son of VASUDEVA! You are the supreme among the celestials.
Your form is exquisitely beautiful. You are the repository of all the auspicious qualities. You are to the onrushing army of demons, what GARUDA is to the serpent. Your gait excels that of the elephant in rut. Your teeth are like the spotless jasmine buds. You are perceived only through VEDANTA and AGAMAs.

A regal raga that one very often hears in kutcheris is Todi. Todi is the pride of our system of music, the imposing gamakas, stunning brighas all dazzle with all their glory in Thodi. When delivered well, a Thodi piece can lift any concert to sublime heights. The notes present in this raga are Sadja, Suddha Rishabha, Sadharana Gandhara, Suddha Madhyama, Pancama, Suddha Dhaivata, and Kaisiki Nishada. Todi evokes karuna and bhakthi rasa-s. The melakarta name for this scale is Hanumathodi. Bhairavi Thaat in Hindustani is the Carnatic Thodi scale.
Carnatic compositions abound in this fertile raga and Thyagaraja’s contribution to this raga is invaluable. Thyagaraja’s ‘Kaddanuvariki’, ‘Koluvamaragadha’, ‘Raju Vedala’, and ‘Dasarathi’, among others are glorious compositions while Dikshitar’s ‘Sri Krishnam Bhaja’, ‘Dakshayani’ and ‘Kamalambike’ are pillars of strength. Shyama Sastri uses the pleading quality in this raga to his advantage in compositions like ‘Raave himagiri’ and ‘Ninne Nammi’. Sarasija naabha muraare by Swati Thirunal Tamil compositions in this raga include ‘Karthikeya’ and ‘Thamadam en swami’ of Papanasam Sivan, timeless in their passionate lyrical appeal. Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi can be sung in Thodi with great aplomb owing to the numerous possibilities its notes hold.
In film music, Thodi has been used sparingly. Its complexities have been handled only by the best musical minds and to keep the character of such a raga intact is indeed a daunting task

Hi. S. R. You might have heard many a "thodi" from Dr. Yesu Das sir. In one of his " thaye yashoda " Dr. would have applied one Two in one principle. Swara niraval goes " ni da ma " to creative effect "nee dhaamma thaye. " (meaningful -- you are, for the benefit of everyone). This I enjoyed to enjoy to share among music 🎶 lovers.
