My Maternal Grandmother told us many, many day's all they had to eat was cabbage, potatoes, turnips, and eggs. She was a great cook but she rarely cooked potatoes. She had all the potatoes she wanted growing up as they lasted longest and were the staple until next years garden came in. Her husband died in 1932 from pneumonia and she ran the farm the best as she and her children could and took in laundry and sewing jobs as income for the rest of her life. She never sold a inch of their property and the most prosperous time of her life is when 2 of my uncles were in the service sending home part of their pay. I'm not saying she had the toughest life but it sure wasn't easy. I enjoy watching y'all operate your family farm. Cheers
I grew up on a self sufficient style farm. And you are right about the potatoes. The only difference is I totally love them to today. Us kids had to normally get our own breakfast and lunch or go without. Most days that meant fried potatoes and eggs. Unless we ran out of chicken eggs. Because we sold a lot of chicken eggs there were many days the only eggs left were duck and goose eggs which I detested. On those days we would have either thick slices of toast from homemade bread slathered with homemade butter and blackberry jam or pancakes. Because we couldn't afford store bought food like rice or pasta, we frequently had potatoes for our starch for dinner whether mashed or plain boiled or baked or casseroled. Unfortunately, because of problems with oxalate i am unable to eat daily any more and have to restrict to no more than once a week. Sigh.
I LOVE POP POP"S imput! He should start a channel lol. That would be cool! I would watch. I NEVER miss a veggie Boy and girl show. Love it when pop pop is on! We LOVE him! Like our grandpa too!
That would be really cool to have someone go through all the Veggie Boy videos and pull out all of Pop Pop's sayings, all the wisdom about fixing things, feeding the animals, and planting, and put it into one video. He keeps so much of everything he knows in his head, that it makes you wonder if it's written down anywhere. As the family genealogist, I've tried to write down most of the stories my mother has told us about growing up during the Depression, especially the ones about how the landscape changed hands and was rezoned where we lived. Luckily, the Veggie Boys family will have the videos on this amazing channel to pass down to future generations and they'll be able to fall in love with the ancestors they never met just like we did. 😊
I love the way the chickens greet you in the morning. They know what is coming. Wow that cabbage was really frozen. Sorry you still have sick kiddos. Not fun. Get well soon. ❤❤❤❤❤
Feeding pigs, chickens and horses EVERY morning before school...winter in RockSprings, Wyoming.....it was dark and cold. We were taught to feed the animals BEFORE we ate.
We were the same. Only time it really bugged us kids was Christmas day. Dad had to feed livestock, Mom had to milk cows first. Then they had breakfast then finally......we could open presents. It was torture waiting but animals always came first. 😊
I love watching these videos every time you post and I especially love talking about a video with my grandma, you guys have inspired me to try and start a small farm market next summer for my own garden. I’m hoping to save up my money I make from selling chickens eggs and buy one your guys hoodies❤
Awesome video, the work is always needed on the farm. YES. Pop Pop should have his own channel! He could teach us all so much! Just one day a week, think about it ❤❤❤❤❤❤
We'd freeze heads of cabbage later in the winter for cabbage rolls. Just thaw and stuff add your sauce and taste just as good as the boiling water method.
Glad you enjoyed harvesting that amazing almost winter cabbage. Nice you all work so easily together. Bryan was interesting when he explained about the feed's contents and importance of the protein. So nifty to watch you do all the work with the machinery and why. Hope all the kiddos feel better quickly if not already well.
Andrew your dad is so cool and funny. I like the way his eyes light up when he’s being funny. It must be really nice to work with your family. I have two sisters and I had a brother who died when he was 22. I closest to my little sister who lives her in Illinois. We’re really close.our parents died more than 10 years ago. So it’s just the three sisters left. I try to check on them everyday. Then my dog died a few months ago. He was 17 years old and my best friend. It feels like I have no one, but I have my son Michael who is 28, and really good friends. You are blessed to have such a big family. Oh by the way I do have lots of cousins, but they live you Tennessee. Have a great day and happy holidays, 😊
Harvesting cabbage in mid-December can be rewarding, as it is often a cooler season in many regions, including Uganda. This period is suitable for harvesting cabbage, especially if it was planted during the rainy season. Here are a few comments and tips: 1. Optimal Timing: Ensure that the cabbage heads are firm and compact, which indicates readiness for harvest. Overmature heads can split or lose quality. 2. Cool Temperatures: December's cool weather in many regions can help maintain the freshness of cabbage, reducing the risk of wilting during harvesting and transportation. 3. Market Demand: December often sees higher demand for fresh produce due to holiday festivities, which can make it a profitable time to harvest and sell cabbage. 4. Post-Harvest Handling: After harvesting, keep the cabbage shaded and cool to preserve its freshness. Transport to market as soon as possible to ensure the best quality for consumers. 5. Soil Preparation for Next Season: After harvesting, consider rotating crops or preparing the field for a new planting cycle to maintain soil health.
Can Grammy come and get my baking done? Lol! Every time you show the baked goods I want to come, but I live in ND and would be quite a drive. Wish we had farm markets like yours around here.
I go to the beach every weekend in texas. But I did my 30 years working. But being a farm boy I enjoy how danial catches so much flax, but danial is the back bone of the veggie boys.
I agree. Put in the effort and money to be self sufficient rather than worry later. You might even be that help for other farmers who need their feed grinded but due to supply chain issues aren’t getting feed delivered on time.
I get the saving of time and work with not grinding. However there is a reason big producer s do it. Cracked or ground will get you much better gain per pound of feed. I grew up in the industry and worked it for twenty years. Best of luck
Hello from Nairobi, so good to see you boys and your dad working together always brings joy to my heart to see how blessed y'all are ❤ babies are like that they make each other sick but they will be okay by God's grace ❤we love you guys in Nairobi ❤❤❤
Good morning jajaja those ladies look very happy to see you ❤😂🎉 wow is a beautiful life I love farmers thanks for all your hard work and I can see you put passion to your job and your take a good care to your animals thanks
Callie's haircut is cute on her. Ya know Andrew, buying a gain mill, it ends up paying for itself. Not so, if you are paying someone else. Hope the kids are up and back at it. .😊😊
Ya'll need to figure out what is the most cost-effective for ya'll. A new/used grinder maybe expensive up front, but over time, it is possible pay for itself. I enjoy watching your videos, we were just talking about taking a trip this summer to see the farm.
AS I UNDERSTAND SOY IS LOW COST AND VERY HIGH IN PROTEIN BUT ITS PROTEOM HAS POOR DIGESTABILTY. IM SURE THERE ARE TIMES WHEN A HIGHER COST PROTEIN WITH BETTER DIGESTABLE ENERGY WOULD IMPROVE THE GROWTH AND FEED CONVERSION RATIO FOR THE CATTLES
I have memory's of farm life from childhood Mother would not sell any of us the farm We all wanted it Seeing the place today, everything is gone, Fire Burnt it all down
My dad always added molasses to the cattle feed so the cattle wouldn't get scours in the winter. That is, until I dumped a 45 gallen drum of molasses on me and was covered in feathers, straw and whatever else was in the barn. LOL
Hello Andrew, Why you got red tags on the calf’s ? Don’t forget to collect chicken eggs or they will freeze. Wow that’s wonderful at least they’re laying. Looks like you need a new barn door Andrew. It’s the same if you chop the corn on cob in chunks and feed to cattle. Works well. And saves you grinding the feed unless you already have ground feed feed it with chunky corn on cob.
Ha, your meal is from Kempton. My great-great grandfather had a mill near there. Maybe instead of getting a new grinder, just get several new hoppers so you can just grind 2-3 hopper loads at a time?
I just got my 1st bag of seedless apples. Taste normal. I found 1 seed out of 4 apples so far. Not crazy about the idea. I have no where to plant an apple tree. But i like the freedom of choice.
Are the chickens laying enough eggs to meet the demand? Just keep your eyes open for a grinder and just keep using that one. Hopefully it will hold up. You answered my egg question.

People like her are the backbone of our countries. You should be proud so proud to be raised by someone like that!
My gram told the same story.

POP POP has a great sense of humor😂 It’s obvious that this time of year is so much less stressful on all of you!
Hello everyone. I stopped in today and picked up eggs and one of those fruitcakes. It was fun seeing the place in person.
Would love to hear more of your story. From the central coast of California near Vandenberg Space Force Base.

It would be a hit…he would only have to post probably once a month or so…I’d definitely watch…he’s very knowledgeable

Daniels likes baking goodies and driving tractors. 😅
You're not alone Andrew, we are all there with you...
Matthew, Daniel and Pop Pop lined up like the usual suspects! 🤣🤣🤣 All you need is Grammy to identify the culprit.
Home made fermented saukraut !!
Ice floats so it weighs less than water! But when water freezes it expands in size!
When he says "Good morning ladies!" It makes my day!!!
Please 🙏🏻 prayers for my son Brian!!❤

If you have the money get your own grinder. You can’t depend on the supply chain these days and it’s not going to get any better.

Hi again. Give Pappa more air time. Always humorous.

Hearing Matthew say “deer bologna” it sounded like he was writing a letter….

You are doing great Andrew

Good morning everyone.❤❤❤❤
How did you get the four wheeler on top of inside barn area. It's shown in this video while feeding corn.
Cabbage Ninja Veggie Boy episode
Are the chickens laying enough eggs to meet the demand? Just keep your eyes open for a grinder and just keep using that one. Hopefully it will hold up. You answered my egg question.
The gloves you wore cutting lettuce are they waterproof?
I grew up on a farm and I am 77. I don’t know how our cattle survived on just grass, hay and some corn.
fun fact: the Cobalt found in the cattle feed is essential for Vitamin B12 production
Do you give them artificial light for them to lay in the winter?
I would watch wisdom from pop pop!!!
What about increasing the Omega-3 fats in the eggs and beef with adding Flax Seed to the feed.
Waving a hand from texas
I would love to see your video's POP POP.
