I half way learned linear algebra backwards in about 3 months. I had absolutely no prerequisites, and the highest math I've formally learned before was trig. I'm a web developer and got interested in graphics programming, and to help me learn I built my own vector and gemm libraries from the ground up. To this day I can't fully explain any of the technical things like theorems and proofs, but I got a really good grasp of how to apply linear algebra to problems, and working with vector spaces and matrices. I went on to start building a physics based particle simulation, but have since taken a detour to learn pre-calc and calc 1. I did so by contributing to an open source arbitrary precision math library. It's been a hell of journey to say the least, but self learning math makes it much more fun and interesting. Channels like this, academic papers, chatGPT, online books, and many other resources made it possible for me.
Sadly, I doubt I'll ever properly learn the subjects thoroughly enough to solve worksheets, but I'm happy with sticking to the applied side of it with programming. I never thought I was any good at math until I challenged myself, and now I see it doesn't have to be hard or boring. For added context, this all stemmed from wanting to create custom filter effects with image manipulation/generation. Starting with building perlin based pRNG noise, then interpolation methods, onto color spaces, and convolutions. The rest was history 😂

the place where linear algebra kinda goes off the cliff is when you get to Vector spaces. This isn't really a hard topic, but it is where many students get stuck in the class because its more abstract. Make sure you get to the section on Vector spaces as soon as you can to spend your time here. I also have the Life of Fred Linear Algebra -which can be a nice little read of linear algebra (but not so many exercises) The manga guide to linear algebra is also a very easy to read through as well.

There is a difference between transcript building and subject learning. Yes, you may be able to complete the course with a good grade added to your transcript, but linear algebra is a large topic connected in many and deep ways with other math subjects.. These relationships take time and effort to create in one's mind, and on-going effort to maintain. As with learning a foreign language, there are no shortcuts to fluency.

@@beophobic9653 Poole's starts with vectors, which I didn't find hard considering I had my fill of them in Physics, and then goes to linear equations and only then really into harder stuff about matrices.
I found that after a few pages Anton's goes the full length on matrices: square of matrices, matrix polynomials, with theorems and proofs, which is okay, except that's not what I was looking for in an 'Elementary....." book.

I took DE over the summer in 2002, I got a C+. Linear Algebra is your first abstract math class, so ideas like vector apces, null space, and linear transformations will be foreign to you. It's also a subject that is foundational for applied math and statistics. What do you gain by taking it over the summer? Why not take intro to basket weaving and get that out of the way and save your important classes for whole semesters? All of that said, it's 2024 now, not 2002. You can start watching Gilbert Strang's linear algebra lectures right now. You can download PDFs of probably a dozen linear algebra text. There are more tools available today than there were back then. You might be able to pull it off.

It took me several years to grasp linear algebra concepts, and my entire career was heavily dependent on it. No one can learn linear algebra in four weeks, but those with sufficient background and intelligence might get a good understanding of a few of the underlying basics. Linear algebra has hundreds of rules that must be understood, memorized, and become second nature. What does rank of a matrix mean? What does a matrix gets the rank it deserves mean? What does dependent versus independent mean? What does the implicit function theorem tell us? Get some good references such as those by Gilbert Strang.

" No one can learn linear algebra in four weeks, but those with sufficient background and intelligence might get a good understanding of a few of the underlying basics"
One could say then that it indeed takes that much to learn, because once you grasp the basics, you can build upon them and improve. Similarly to drawing, then you are just perfecting the craft, creating more and more complex images.

My advice: The 1st two to three chapters of any math book are usually the most important to understand, those are the fundamentals, the intuitions you need, and the rest of the book is (usually) extensions of those. Drill hard on Ch. 1 and 2, learn it as deeply as you can. (of course go farther if you have time) Then you should be able to "slide" through the rest of the course without too much difficulty. I think your goal is just "survival" here. Just my 2 cents from someone who learns a bit more slowly than the average bear.

My opinion on this is completely from personal experience. I was going for a minor in mathematics in my senior year of college and struggled to find enough courses to take to graduate. I ended up taking both a linear algebra course and numerical analysis course in linear algebra at the same time in a 20 credit semester. The only problem was that linear algebra was a prerequisite to the numerical analysis class. However, I had the professor previously so I was able to get permission to take it. Ended up needing to go through my linear algebra book in a similar timescale to understand the concepts I was lacking and get my reps in with matrices. I think it is more than feasible, especially if you’re not taking anything else. I believe in you! Go for it!

And I learned more in a single video than I did in an entire chapter's worth of information. If things get slightly boring, uncover the real-life applications of whatever it is you're on. You would be surprised. I too like math, mainly visualizing and I truly believe studying linear algebra is the way to go. You can learn the computation maybe in 4 weeks, but learning the other things, aside from geometry, you will keep learning new things about linear algebra like the connections to exponential matrices etc. So, I don't speak for everyone, but I think some of us keep coming back to linear algebra to cement concepts and learn from other perspectives and learn new concepts that just all seem to click. There are many applications in other subjects like economics and physics with their own set of estimators that you won't learn all that linear algebra has to offer in a basic course. Like projecting a matrix onto a y vector into a 2d subspace of x variables in statistics, among other concepts.

Depth versus breath. There are always tradeoffs. There is a tremendous difference in retention and ability to become a subject matter expert when taking a 4 week course when compared to the full 16 week semester course. When I got my first professional job, I worked with professionals with EE degrees who were 60 years old. While they were in school they did not learn all the subjects taught today. However, what they did learn the learned so well that they still remembered it.
tl;dr: If I were planning to go into a field that required in-depth knowledge of math, I would not take any shortcuts. Not only would I not take shortened courses, I would likely take extra (not required) courses. But I am wired that way. I value the extra time spent gaining the in-depth knowledge more than my graduation date.

From my experience, knowledge takes time to mature; with 4 weeks you (student) may be able to prepare and pass the exam (even with excellent success marks) however reason for this is:
1.) courses usually follow just one book and if you adopt that single way of looking at things you might likely perform well
2.) in 4 weeks you can push a lot of knowledge in some sort of short memory, or maybe not a short memory, but you can gain some immature "untested" knowledge which vanish quickly afterwards if you don't cross it with other views on things, read another book and give yourself a room to think about implications, what ifs, finding your own examples and counterexamples for things etc.
However, exact decision might still be to take it, just to "master it" will very likely require a lot of follow-up work after those 4 weeks.
    Nice videos, by the way:)

Yes that's a summer course, four days a week for four weeks. I've taken physics 2 (E&M) as a summer course. It was hard but not unreasonable - the issue is the density of the material. You can't blink. It's a sprint. If this is the only class that guy is taking and he devotes his free time to homework and studying, then it's totally reasonable.

Then again, it is nice to have only one thing to put your focus into everyday. If you have trouble balancing your studies for multiple classes or you anticipate you’ll have a chaotic schedule, accelerated courses might be better for you. I think with high motivation, learning the basics of linear algebra in 4 weeks is entirely possible. For example, follow Gilbert Strang's video lectures and do as many exercises as you can, 4 weeks is more than enough to establish a bridge head in the subject.
That being said, I think it is also important to avoid the "once and forever" mindset. Don't set unrealistic goals (such as mastering linear algebra in 4 weeks). Linear algebra is a vast and deep subject with incredibly broad applications. So it takes time and thus patience to internalize the definitions and theorems. Good luck!

You can "learn" anything over any time period you want. The real question is what you mean by master. One of the most instructive sources on this topic is the book/website/videos by Scott Young on Ultra Learning. He studied the entire MIT BS Computer Science curriculum in one year. That's four years worth of work compressed into one year. He watched the video lectures. Took all the final exams. He posted all of his results on-line. While he did well in some courses, in a number of them his grades were in the 60-79% range. So had he graduated with those grades he would have been considered a mediocre student at best.. did he really master the material? Then again, he did it for very little cost and in a vastly shorter period. He did say he was spending 8 hours a day studying for a big chunk of that time.
I'm not saying don't go for it. Just manage your expectations.

If your prof is still talking about gaussian jordan elimination after week 4, you're definitely wasting your linear algebra requirement in a 4 week course where you don't even get to eigenvalues and eigenvectors. My prof sat on gaussian jordan elimination problems forever, and then in 2-5 minutes explained eigenvalues/eigenvectors because they're important to engineering and statistics. I had to spend some time teaching myself that so I could understand some statistics and diff-eq 2 where we began solving linear systems.
Moral of the story, don't skimp out on linear algebra. Or at least make sure you hone your linear algebra. It's a very important subject.

I strongly agree. Additionally, I think it's really depends on what textbook the class is using. If the book is an introduction to linear algebra for science and engineering majors mainly involving calculations, I would say yes. If the book is more for math majors including some proofs and theory, I think waiting until the fall semester would probably be a better idea.

Book tip: "A Mind For Numbers: How to Excel at Math and Science" by Barbara Oakley. Or take the course "Learning How to Learn" on Coursera, which Oakley co-teaches.
The book and the course are also useful for people who are already good at maths, and even for people who are learning things that have nothing to do with maths or sciences, e.g. foreign languages.

Enough of me though what you really want to be solid in what you learn in LA because it's Applied in several fields down the road especially electronics. Mech. too not sure where. But ya got to be able to form those equations f/ whatever. I can't speak on the Mech side but circuits yes or at least in coursework.
I don't suspect it's too often you have multiple power sources in Real World Design.

Maybe he won't be able to do it and will have to take the subject again, but repetition is good for memory anyways. I'd definitely go for it unless I was really worried about a program GPA minimum or something.

Dude, you cannot self study this one - you need to free your mind and drop right into it. Pretend you’re in a coffeehouse and your friend is giving you a summary.
The hardest part will be getting to that Zen-like mind state. This is a high level overview. Get ready to learn how to work on the fly.

If 6 week courses are the fastest by your standards then I might actually be a genius in math. I distinctly remember also having only 4 weeks for linear algebra and wasted 2 of those, but then I went 100% with sleepless nights and aced it. I don't think that is healthy 😅. It is possible through if you ask me

I'm curious about why you said studying in the morning is best. Is it? Or does it vary by person? I am not a morning person, so I do much of my studying very late at night. Sometimes I dream about it, which I suspect might be helping.

If you really grind on it, you can get the basics down pretty good, but a lot of the cool stuff isn't going to sink in in that time frame. You'll probably pass though. They probably aren't setting unrealistic standards in the class.

  • @josephshaff5194
    @josephshaff5194 9 месяцев назад

I don't do summer classes normally. I think ya need time to soak up the details. It depends on the persons backround. Sometimes school is more like a game of chess. Here what I would do. Try to pull through but if you can't blow the final so it put your grade where you can retake it at a normal pace. Everybody is in such a hurry . . . I just don't see why. Or you could switch to audit if allowed or if your close ask if you can have a letter grade and finish later. Sometimes for some circumstances you'll be given up 1 yr. to complete and then test.
Now this may help. MS Copilot (AI) can do most problems. Chat GPT as well. If you get stuck.
Generally speaking, I think you made a bad choice by trying to take a min. 3 qtr class in 4 weeks and should've known better.
I had a Spanish class that during a summer blew my GPA cum. as the Instructor doubled I & II together for a summer. We given an option to bail but I had had it in HS and thought I could hang and I found out.
It really depends on the person. LA is really useful.
