Raising Monarchs: Are you actually helping?

  • What started as a desire to tap into my childhood love for insects turned into a transformative experience (pun intended). Witnessing the metamorphosis of a butterfly is an incredibly unique experience, unlike any other. However, what I gained from this experience was even more valuable, and I felt it was important to share not only what I saw and learned about the process but also the significance of conservation and what the conservation of these magnificent creatures should look like.

Three years ago I had a fair amount of milkweed in my small yard and they were loaded with Monarch caterpillars. They picked different places for their chrysalis: on the leaves of Siberian iris, the underside of a metal lawn chair, on the underside of a leaf of a potted geranium - but most of them picked the vinyl siding of my garage on a south-facing wall! Overall, I counted 21. That was neat, because on several mornings I saw them emerge, dry their wings in the sun and fly away.
The next two years, the deer at all my milkweed. This year I had a sparse growth of milkweed, and in the past month I've spotted nine caterpillars that had attained close to full size. But I never found a chrysalis. One by one they disappeared, and I can only hope that a wasp didn't get them. But where they went is a mystery. I will save the milkweed seed pods and plant more next year.

You should try netting or build a screened area over the milkweed.
I property sat for three years. I had an insert from an old table top roaster that I kept filled with water. I would add water everyday that no rain fell and clean the insert on a regular basis. Most of the time I would see less than 10 mosquito larvae in the water. There were wasp nests everywhere loaded with wasp. I believe the wasp were eating the mosquitoes that layed their larvae in the water. Well, the majority of the mosquitoes. The last year I was there, honey bees found the water. I definitely had to stay on top of the water level. When I moved, all of the critters had to find a new water source.
So, you may want to keep some water out for the insects and birds and keep a spot on moist dirt for the butterflies to get nourishment from. They need more than milkweed and flowers.
One more thing. The place was secluded enough for me to go naked. As long as I was naked I could walk within a inch of the wasp nest and they wouldn't budge. If I had clothes on they would get very agitated. We need insects and we need to insure their survival as well as ours.
This is a very beautiful video.

I will not bring any caterpillars in the house next year, but I am definitely setting up a care station on my deck. There will be a lot of milkweed growing, and hopefully many monarchs will find them. I am thinking about some kind of enclosure or mesh to keep predators out. Thank you so much for giving me the extra motivation to take on such a project. ❤❤❤

Retired estate gardener. I'm so happy you took an interest in monarchs. I've been planting milkweed wherever I can over the decades but it seems to makes little difference except in my head. The processes they go through are a miracle to watch. Fyi: aphids secret sugar poop and that attractes sooty mold. Ants too. Looks like the wasp was lapping it up, lol. You can't tell me Nature doesn't have a sense of humor.

I use head nets, like the ones bee keeper or fisherman use to keep bees and mosquitos off their face! I move several caterpillars to a strong milkweed and then put the net over to protect them from preditors. They are still outside and still subject to the natural light and light cycle that triggers migration. They are certainly fascinating creatures to observe. Thanks!

It was learning as you go because I didn't know the chrysalis would turn a dark color losing that beautiful green color. I was so afraid the first one had died until they all did the same thing. I was fascinated by every bug, frog, toad, grasshopper, praying mantis, snake, etc. etc. you get the picture. From age three I was my mother's nightmare child. Every year I have to wait until I catch a female laying eggs and follow her around to collect those leaves. If I don't, they are gone by the next day. I blame the ants. I also have tons of wasps as they love my pollinator garden. I raise about 30-60 every year. Tip: a layer of paper towels to line your terrarium will make it easier to clean. Floral tube's will help keep the milkweed fresher, or just wrap a small wad of wet paper towel around the stem of the leaf, wrap with a small piece of seran wrap or cut piece of plastic bag and secure with a twist tie.

When entering the park you will need to hook up with a guide that is there more as protector of the vegetation and Monarchs. If my Spanish had been better perhaps he would have had information other than stay on the path. The “museum at the base had a lot of information on the whole migratory process.Try to go early in the morning while it is cold, the hike up the mountain will warm you up. It is an amazing experience that should not be missed. I did it about fifteen years ago while living in Guanajuato.

I also have milkweed growing around the house and caterpillars are a common sight. I'm sure predators get some but I've seen quite a few pupate and then pop out as beautiful monarchs. Point is plant more native milkweeds and they (you back yard population ) will be fine until they fly South in Fall.
