  • Sully takes the leap in to WWII unboxing and tells you all about the 1/6 Scale DID WWII British Airborne "Red Devil" Commander action figure. This figure features a headsculpt in the likeness of Sean Connery. Sully mentions that this figure is based on a character from a movie, but some research found that this figure is NOT based on a film (at least that we could find).
The Red Devils were the 1st Airborne Division of the British Army during World War 2. You can see on this Wiki page (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_Air...) that one of the Red Devil commanders was named Roy E. Urquhart and if you look at his Wiki profile, he looks a lot like Sean Connery (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Urq.... Now we're not so sure that this figure is based on the likeness of Sean Connery, so much as the likeness of the actual Red Devil Commander, Roy Urquhart.

The small ‘toggle’ rope that you described as a ‘noose’ was actually a short length of rope usually carried by British Commandos. When linked together, (one soldier’s wooden toggle to another soldiers rope loop), many individual lengths of rope could be made into a serviceable climbing ‘rope ladder’. Plus of course, a few other uses that the innovative Commando minds could think of.

Assuming this figure is actually intended to represent Roy Urquhart, commander of the 1st Airborne, he shouldn't have a parachute. Urquhart was 6 feet tall and 200 pounds, and he was 43 when transferred from an infantry division. He never underwent jump training, and landed at Arnhem via glider.

Looking at the sculpt, it does kind of resemble him. I guess they didn't do their research before giving him a schute lol. Thanks for the info!

Folks have already identified the oversmock, the rope is called a "toggle rope". They can be used for descending trees, but they're designed for everyone to be able to fit the toggle of their rope through the loop of someone else's rope to make as long a rope as needed. Commandos and engineers also tended to carry them.

We used them during basic training in the marines, South African Marines that is, they issued us WWII webbing during initial training stage before we qualified and got modern webbing etc they were used to connect with the next man in front of him by means of the Toggle Rope, in cases like sandstorms when we patrolled the Namib Desert, we would all tie on to each other so no one could go missing.....and to be used as you stated to combine and use as a rope but main use was to connect with man in front.😎😎

@@Project-Legacy Cool, thanks for filling in some gaps! Kinda like mountain climbers lashing themselves together in case one of them loses their footing.

I would like to add that the real person didn’t have a parachute regiment badge on his beret, you can correct this mistake with a 3rd party beret from an internet auction site

The rope was also used with others to make a longer length of rope, the wooden part going through the loop and so on. The military version of tying bed sheets together.

That rope was used when the paras got stuck on a tree so they could climb down. DO NOT use the parachute, I had one german with parachute and I destroyed the figure!

Copy that! I've had a few customers buy the parachutes thinking their kids could play with them.

Even though I'm not a WWII guy, I think this figure was pretty great. Did has another WWII figure coming out soon from the Red Devils series, too. There is a LOT of action figure competition out there, for sure, but in my opinion, DID and each company out there comes up with some great stuff and new gear.

This DiD figure can hardly be described as a boring DiD release. It’s unique in so many ways and the last WWII British paratrooper DiD released was Taylor, like 17 years ago, and DiD has come along way since then. If you collect 1/6 WWII figures, DiD is the best manufacturer in the game.
