The fact that they created an engine that made such a game playable on the PSX console was and still is truly ground breaking. Sure, there were compromises, but it's still fun to play.
@@AKAPATMAN That's not how it works, unfortunately. For it to be as colorful as the PSX version, you will need to edit the color lighting sectors individually and for each map, and that task is not simple. Reshaders mostly just enhance what you already see, it doesn't modify the maps themselves which is what the PSX version does. In any case, developers have already said that the PSX campaign will be in the remastered version at a future update.
I really never understood why this and the PC version never had muzzle flashes added. It really looks goofy without them. Good on the N64 version for adding them.
I think the PSX port feels like it has more details, colors and lights in the environment, whereas the original PC version looks more flat, with little variation from the usual brown walls
The mouse makes a HUGE difference for this port. It makes it feel much more like playing with WASD and mouse. If only other FPS games on the system had done the same.
Not that shabby a port at all! Gotta love the increased use of colors. Though understandable due to hardware limitations, those much more frequent loading screens retract a bit from the experience, at least when you're accustomed to the PC version. Interesting small tweaks here and there. Like giving the first super shotgun much earlier, seemingly eliminated that ridiculous muzzle climb from the SMG (I'd love to have that on PC... Gotta see if there's a mod for that!), etc. Also, are all the powerups activated on pickup, with no possibility of saving those juicy invulnerabilities and quad damages for the tight spots?
I remember playing quake 2 for the ps1 when it came out. It was a great game but the it sucked playing it with a controller. A friend of mine at work had a ps1 mouse. He let me borrow it. I played this game using the controller to walk backwards, forwards, and strafing. I used the ps1 mouse to turn and look up and down. After trying that, I knew I wanted to build a gaming pc so I could play games like this with the mouse and keyboard.
I wish there was a way to get mouse aiming working with Quake II on N64 since that's a fully original campaign. Same with Quake III Revolution on the PS2.
It’s crazy to think this was all done in the quake 1 engine albeit a bit modified. But it makes one think, how big of an improvement was quake 2 really compared to the first?
For some reason when using a mouse in duckstation it freezes the aiming when moving it quickly for a fraction of a second constantly.... Someone has a fix?
Thanks. It's hard to choose favourite weapon, there's plenty good of them, but I had most fun with chaingun and railgun. And as a favourite enemy, I'd choose Guardian boss, it's got pretty neat design and it's also exclusive enemy for PSX version ^^
I remember back in the day when i was 11 yr old, when i beat this game on hard i was so happy and full of myself. Damn it was pretty hard playing it on controller. :P
Use the Epsxe emulator. Use the stock controller plugin. Change bindings to whatever keys use. Then by using F5 or F6, you can switch from controller to mouse-mode, basically letting your pc mouse be used like the ps1 mouse.
Ive gone further and used mouse in non-mouse shooters in the emulator. But you need a plug-in that supports binding mouse movements, its s bit fiddly but it works!
@Kleiner Helfer I cant tell if you're making a joke so I'm just gonna answer as if you're not. Bethesda owns ID Software now, and publishes all of their stuff.
+Daniel Yes, video plugin Pete's OpenGL2 Driver 2.9. If you can already aim with the mouse it shouldn't require any configuration. The game itself has pre-defined mouse buttons, where left MB is for shooting and right MB is for jumping. Maybe your mouse isn't fully compatible?
I've play it since my age 6 together with my 2 brother 😄 i scared and scream when enemy Strogg pop up😌..PC version so confused but PS is not bad sometime i got lost😅
long time since i played, i got stuck in medical research, when i need the tank commanders head to go through those doors. Speaking of medical research, there was a creature in there that pop up in a the game, but not every time, it was like one of those female creature, but seem to be on fire, anyone know what it was?
How do you get the mouse to work? I want to try Quake 2 and Alien Resurrection with the mouse but can't figure it out and have searched the internet on solutions and no one says how to do it.
I know that's its not working for everyone, but I simply get the mouse work by having Dualshock in port 1 and Digital/Mouse in port 2, both configured in ePSXe config options. After that you only need launch one of those games and press F6, which is for switching between controller ports. Then you press F5, since that will switch from Digital to Mouse in port 2 and it's done. In Quake 2 control options you need to enable mouse, in Alien Resurrection it's automatic from what I recall.
Just to let you know that it worked and I had no problems with it. Tried both Quake 2 and Alien Resurrection with it and it worked pretty well. Thanks again. :)
Ok, I'm a bit surprised that it works and runs without issues for you, many people have problems to get the mouse working properly. Anyway you're welcome, I'm glad it helped!
This was played on PC through PSX emulator EpsxE. Not sure what type of settings u are demanding, there are separate plugin settings for audio, video, controller etc.
I didn't use keyboard. Since I played it on PC through emulator, I was using controller/gamepad in my left hand and mouse in my right hand. This game as one of the very few on PS1 allows you to use this control scheme. You have to configure it in emulator controls settings though.
I didn't use keyboard although you can use it too, if you bind keys to controller buttons in emulator settings. Instead I used pc gamepad in my left hand, using only D-pad for movement and L1/L2 buttons for switching weapons and mouse in my right hand for shooting/jumping. It's default control scheme if you play Quake II on original PSX console with connected mouse.
epsx support normal mause and control (Need set up it like a pad) also why play on pc witch taht ok - on android ,tablet android or by emulating pc version on windows on smartphon etc . But if on PC why dont play Quake 2 pc version ?
+Butcher Bay I do like the pc version and did playthroughs for it too. I did this walkthrough, since I never owned a PSX mouse and wanted to try how the controls feels with mouse support and I've gotta say - It's not bad at all! It's not as smooth as the pc version with mouse, but it gives definitely better controls than playing it just on controller, so I enjoyed the game more by having a more comfortable aiming with mouselook :)
Ok for test its good - never haved PSX i haved that (Up to day also) Nes - Quake 2 played on pc when was relesed and many ages up to day 1-3 best Quake games. Played on friends PSX years ago - i like play on pad FPS and its good like today coonsole games control . The psx mause friend have but ony on RE1 i played - its kind like emulating control not pc mause 100% but sort - like this days that stuff for consoles to play on kayboard and mause - but nice maybe i test quake that style on real or emu some day
It's the best looking FPS game on PSX console, although gamepad controls in this game are ruining the whole experience, thumbstics sensitivity is set just wrong, and digital controls on standard gamepad are even worse. I have tried playing quake 2 on PSX emulator with mouse (and 4x CPU speed boost because default CPU settings controls feels like 30fps) game was very fun to play. So IMO it's terrible game on gamepad, and very good on mouse. Quake on PSX compared to PC is much shorter, levels are smaller and graphics is worse in every way (textures, lighting on textures, resolution, framerate), but for PSX I think it was amazing port.
The raw footage was done by recording the game running on PSX emulator in 1920x1080 resolution and was uploaded in that state here on YT. Not sure, how you came to the conclusion of exporting the video.
ps1 version of quake 2 is special cause the port developers put so much love into this game n.n
The fact that they created an engine that made such a game playable on the PSX console was and still is truly ground breaking. Sure, there were compromises, but it's still fun to play.
damn I wish the pc version was this colorful
Well actually hd port berserker it's like that.
6 years later... It is now with the new update :)
@@AKAPATMAN As much as I liked the Remaster, its not as colorful as the PSX version.
@@davidchez513 True but if you wanna go abit further to reach that goal, you could use reshade. :)

You f*ckin’ killed it dude!
The track at the very start is my favorite.
"Stealth Frag" - I believe by Trent Reznor?
Great stuff. Works well with the PS aesthetic.
sonic mayhem
wow this version was so much more colourful than the PC one was. pretty lighting effects, too.
Pc was first
Without the low resolution this game looks REALLY good.
Saiker looks like an early Dreamcast/PS2 game. It remainds me a lot to Unreal Tournament DC/PS2 or Half-Life for consoles.
its been definitely upped in emulator

1:03:50 satisfaction, nice play!
11:55 Sick beat synchronization
The rendering quality is of course worse, but otherwise the graphics is improved. The much broader palette is especially remarkable.
1:17:26 - You finally used a blaster in this game.

Quis game was a miracle on the ps1.
Gee. I wonder if the PSX version is better than the 64 version.

Any idea if these were made as custom maps on PC?
I wish there was a way to get mouse aiming working with Quake II on N64 since that's a fully original campaign. Same with Quake III Revolution on the PS2.
Given the recent Q2 update also includes the N64 version, kb+m config is now a reality, albeit on the remaster ports.
It’s crazy to think this was all done in the quake 1 engine albeit a bit modified. But it makes one think, how big of an improvement was quake 2 really compared to the first?
This game was the best when i was a kid. still have it on N64 going to play it today.
Wonder why the sound has higher pitch

PS1 is the best version of Quake 2. 100%
Quake 2 remaster 101%.
