+budmeister Still, even if you were leading the tank it would be scary if the driver couldn't see you. My original comment wasn't suggesting he was an enemy by the way.
Very tie, but as a biased fan of Wells I must say he is still a genius, his morals and lessons about science and power presented in 'the war of the worlds' and 'the first men in the moon' are still very much relevant today and his popularity proves this. True that he was inspired by many things, any author is, however his masterful ways of story presented them to the general audience more easily and it is undeniable he inspired many, many things as well as predicting a hell of a lot.
Although I agree that science fiction and prophetic fiction writers are children of their generation (like the rest of us), I must object to one of your underlying concepts: Sorry, but your surety that extrapolation and interpretation are more important than the ideas that sent practical folks out into the problem in the first place is exactly incorrect. You must, I repeat, MUST, have both. And a bon mot, with no offense meant. 1) Engineers = a plethora, so many that they all can't find work. You can teach engineering, after all. 2) Great Idea men? = In extremely short supply. You can't teach imagination. You have to be born with it. Keep thinking, keep posting, and good fortune follow your search for wisdom.
***** A valid point. Still . . . It was not until Verne and Wells that writers began to attempt to conceive of what sort of power source would be necessary to propel and vitiate such fantastic beasts. Until then, the Tank, much like the Ornithopter, and Submarine, was something for the "Penny Dreadfuls". Ideas (and I am an idea man, so I give creativity its due) become practical possibilities when the creative genius' ideas are mated to the craft and physical insights of a master engineer.
With this level of popularity, there is no way they would pass up the chance to keep this cash flow going. Plus, they'd probably enjoy it as much as we would.
Another great episode as usual! On one hand we get tanks and Irish kicking ass, but on the other we get Luigi Cadorna... Plus, you really rocked that ending Indy, keep it up man!
an irony in the development of the Tank is that once Armies knew how to use them they could arguably be credited with reducing causalities simply by making trench warfare impossible.
@@vincenzo4965 I’m still convinced trench warfare is still more brutal due to its tendency for soldiers to get in close an often use melee combat 😢😢😢, large portions of casualties came from that style of combat the trench club being an icon of the brutal nature of ww1. Hi Indy and the Great War Team, One of my Ancestors, I think my Great Great Grandfather was ordered to join the Austrio-Hungarian Army. He was nearly blind and would have gone to a certain doom, except that he refused. He was then confined to a dungeon for the war. This probably saved his life. Is there any other incidents of people refusing to join the war effort for similar reasons? Would they normally be imprisoned or killed depending on the country for refusing? Thanks ahead for your consideration, Nicholas Wilkowski
Damn, I sure WISH I could afford to go on one of your meets. You guys are great! I spent 3 months in Deutschland In Emmelsbull, 2 hours north of Hamburg, in 1999, working on a dairy farm. What a wonderful country and people.
Great video, I just discovered this channel a few hours ago and I'm really enjoying watching your videos! So now that you have made a video about tanks you could make a video about anti tank weapons for the germans, because as we all know they didn't had like much tanks they could sent out to the battlefield so they invented guns like the T-Gewehr. Would be very cool to see a video about that :)
Verdun is an amazing game it is the most accurate WWI fps on the market (I think the only one ) it's not pretty but neither was WWI now if you can't appreciate history in a game, you my friend make me frown! );
They could really do with some new maps and factions for Verdun. I know it's only meant to be the Western front but I wish they'd add Mons and some early war maps with less emphasis on trenches, as well as a Gallipoli map and maybe the Italian front.
The infinity stones of warfare: Massive casualties Nationalism Endless manpower Huge tank fleet Epic comeback Ideological suppression Guess who was the first to collect all of these
For "Out of the Trenches". Now that tanks have appeared on the battlefield could you please go into detail on how the armored fighting vehicle got the name "TANK"? I believe your audience will find it very interesting since most people think it is an acronym. Thank you everyone at The Great War for all you do. I continue to tell all the Soldiers I work with about your channel and many have even thanked me for showing them. I look forward to each new episode.
I think it would be interesting and sobering if at the end of each weeks episode you gave a recap of the number of casualties both for the week and so far in the war. The numbers are so unreal that they are hard to keep track of.

Yeah, I get your point, but around 30,000 danish soldiers fought on the German fronts, because the danish-german border had been pushed quite far up into Denmark after the battle of Dybbøl in 1864. So as small as the number may be danes were actually participating.
those were technically germans of danish ethnicity... never understood how that was such a hard thing to swallow for my fellow danes, but for some reason they just keep making a fuzz about something as unimportant as that...

Hi, first time viewer here. I'm from Denmark (South almost German), and my great grandfather have only talked about the War once (he fought for the Germans). In this tale (past down to my grandmother, to my mother, and then to me), there is one uncommon part that always have frustrated me. my great grandfather was in some kind of trench, (my mom sadly, doesn't have much interest war or geography). In this trench would all of the soldiers be horrified of sleeping and of spending time alone. You can only imagine the anxiety and exhaustion that would bring. The reason was do to the fact that he and his fellow troops believed, that the enemy would send "negros" across no-mans-land doing the nights , undressed and only equipped with a knife. The africans would stealthily slice the throat of any careless soldiers. I personally find it difficult, to believe that he would have made this story a part of his legacy, if he wasn't 100% sure, that that actually happened. But for all I know it could just as well be an urban myth. Do you know any thing about this subject, or do you know where this story could have originated from (if it is a myth) ?
Welcome to the Channel. Thanks for the question and because we like the question, we will answer it in one our our Out of the Trenches in the next weeks after doing some research. So stay tuned :)
Hey is it me or them Mother Mark 1 tank looks almost the same model the German used in the Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade but missing the top turret?
It looks a lot more like the Mark VII to me. The Mark VIII seems to have a much more rounded angle to the tracks on the front, compared the more angular track on the VII (and in Indian Jones).
From what I read, many Greek soldiers were brought into the area of Berlin and actually treated very well. They were kind of exotic at the time and with all young men at the fronts, not few German-Greek families started off.
+Funny Farmer 200 Greek soldiers stayed in Goerlitz after the war. Today there are over 40 families which are direct descendants of the soldiers. Funny Farmer Under orders of king Konstantine the IV Army Corps surrendered. 6,000 men and 400 officers, with their commanding officer, colonel Ioannis Hatzopoulos (died later in Germany), asked the Germans to take them captives, as nobody wanted to be captivated from Bulgarians (for obvious reasons). Some of these men took part in the November Revolution in 1918. 3.000 men and 150 officers did not surrendered, but defected to Salonica in order to join Venizelos’ forces.
