This was incredibly helpful, especially in explaining the stitches. Could you do a video on what stitches are best for a specific fabric? Like jersey, chiffon, cotton, etc.? That's one thing I've struggled with when sewing. Great vid!
I have to be honest, my 45ish year old Necchi Lelia 513 is probably the best machine I have ever used. It's super solid. :) The guy at our sewing shop did tell me that an Elna or a Juki would be my best bet if I wanted a new machine. My newer brother is not heavy duty at all, so one day I think I'll get a computerized Juki or Elna. :) Thanks for the review!
Thank you for the review. I'm always looking for the next BIG BAD in my sewing machine universe. I'm about to need to go to industrial for a straight stitch. Ugh, the cost, the room, the horror, the sewn fingers, THE FUN!! Yes, even sewn fingers and yes, I've used an industrial and yes, I've sewn my fingers. Fun times. LOL!
This video was so helpful April! I don't have my own sewing machine so I've always used my grandma's Juki machines haha. I used Bernina sewing machines back when I studied textiles in high school and those worked well for me too. There's so many DIYs I've been dying to try out so I better get a machine soon hahaha. Your machine has all the features I want 😍😍 Gotta find one a bit more budget friendly, or maybe I'll just look for a deal and invest :D
Hello! I'm still very new to sewing with a sewing machine (i've only completed one project and it was a mess! but worked!) but I've fallen in love with your channel and many others and want to really start sewing alot!! I have a singer stylist 513 (i think). it was my grandmas and its VERY OLD! I figure I'll probably get a new one when this one stops working or if i can save up enough cash before then. What I'm really interested in is a serger. I basically would like to know a good brand and model for starting out. Also, do you think I should get one now, or should I upgrade my sewing machine before worrying about it? Love the channel!! Thanks so much!
Thanks for this video! I've always used my mom's old and not so good sewing machine and have been looking for a good new sewing machine which can do anything. This was very helpful!!!
That sewing machine looks like it sews beautifully! Does it do a double overlock stitch? When you showed the closeup of the stitch patterns it had the same symbol as my machine that does that type of stitch. I don't own a serger so I like to go back over my seam edges with double overlock stitch to keep fabric from fraying in the wash. Also, how is maintenance on that sewing machine? Do you have to oil it and is it easy to keep it running smoothly?
I had a Juki HZL-G210 before and it has several overlock stitches, but can't do them as efficiently as a serger / overlocker can. I used to use them sparingly but prefer using zig zag or a 3-step zig zag when finishing seams with a sewing machine. A computerised machine like this will have oil embedded in the bearings and the manual tells you not to oil it yourself. That does not mean that it doesn't need oil, you should bring it to a dealer for servicing every year or so. You also need to remove the bobbin case and clean the lint under it with a brush, after every one to two projects. When replacing the bobbin case, make sure to align the spring so that the bobbin will keep its tension.
Took a long nap and i cant sleep anymore so when i saw this notification i clicked immediately. Good to know if I ever want to upgrade in the future :) Right now I have a brother xr9500prw I got it a while back, good machine but it is not heavy duty like yours (a quality I'll be looking for when I get a chance to upgrade) love your vids.
I just thrifted a school girl skirt but it's too long. Can you make a video showing how to hem that up? It has tons of layer on the bottom and I dont know how to work with it! Help xoxo Love your videos!!!
Your sewing machine is amazing it has so many features.. it goes for $550 on Amazone.. i would love such a machine.. its capable of anything from my point of view.. but i would like to know about the other machines you used in your thrifted transformation Ep.18
i want. its so hard to use the manual sewing machine but its worth the wait i guess hoping for more reviews. so i can choose whats great and a less pricey. :)
You can move the needle position by changing the stitch width on a straight stitch. Look at your machine manual to get the max stitch width (typically 5 mm, or 7 mm on some newer computerised machines). Stitch width of more than max width /2 (i.e. more than 2.5 mm on a 5 mm machine, more than 3.5 mm on a 7 mm machine) will give you a needle position to right of centre. If you have a Brother machine, you need to find the stitch number corresponding to the centre oriented straight stitch (mine is 3) as the default is left needle position. The Juki like April's will have centre as the default.
I read it as "DIY Sewing Machine" and I was like "woah she made a sewing machine!!!"

Same here!!! Agree it'd be super helpful if she could do that!!! :)
Thanks April!
I just bought Juki HZL G110 online yesterday after pondering for a month. Your review is the tie breaker.

Thank you in advance
I just thrifted a school girl skirt but it's too long. Can you make a video showing how to hem that up? It has tons of layer on the bottom and I dont know how to work with it! Help
xoxo Love your videos!!!
Try ironing the bottom so it's flat, hemming it to the desired length, and then ironing the pleats in again
That is such an impressive machine.
I love your videos, you are so creative.

Does anyone know why somemachines now dont have the needle position to the right? Only left?
You can move the needle position by changing the stitch width on a straight stitch. l love your videos.
Tnx
Can this machine do a blind hem stitch?
Yes! Blind hem is quite standard on most machines
I love your video😘
Foot pedal?
Foot pedal is standard on all machines. Computerised machines give the option of sewing with either the foot pedal or the start/stop button.
