    It looks like a well designed little gadget. When I saw this device originally, I wasn't too sure about it, but these tests really put it through it's paces. I also wonder if it won't even get that hot in actual use as some heat would be coupled into the Amiga itself and dissipated (so the Amiga acts like a heatsink for it).

    • @RobSmithDev
      @RobSmithDev  7 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah seems under "normal" use sticks at that 40 degrees level which is perfectly fine and kind of "ambient" for electronics I guess

      Factoring in the price for both this and the USB C adapter and postage puts it in a higher price bracket to other modern replacements. Not helped by them charging VAT unnecessarily for customers outside the EU unfortunately.

    • @RobSmithDev
      @RobSmithDev  7 месяцев назад

      @mja65 true maybe the next batch will be cheaper. I did just find and test a 100W USB-C charger that works perfectly and only cost £19

    Thanks for the deep dive into the murky waters of the Power Shark, Rob! You've given me a lot of confidence in the device and I can't wait to try running one of my Amigas from a battery, I just need some kind of portable TV to go with it. My two Power Sharks arrived the other day (I think, I haven't unboxed the mysterious package from Poland yet, but I'm pretty sure I know what it is), I think I will give one away as a prize for the next AmiGameJam!

    • @RobSmithDev
      @RobSmithDev  7 месяцев назад

      Sounds like an awesome prize! I had mine running for several hours yesterday on battery, I bought a fairly beefy power bank that tells you in hours/minutes how long is left which is handy

    I've always found that USB PD capable supplies, even the cheap ones, have great power management. you're probably unlikely to run into power issues with a USB PD supply, most of them also have an overcurrent protection.
    also this gives you the option to have a battery powered amiga. get like a portable HDMI monitor and plug the amiga in using an adapter. all powered off a battery bank.

    Hi, I have an A500 with a GVP HD+ hard drive that I have modified to get power from the Amiga, do you think the Power Shark would be able to handle that load? Great review and I will probably get a power Shark anyway.

    • @RobSmithDev
      @RobSmithDev  3 месяца назад +1

      Does the GVP actually contain a real spinning drive? If so I wouldn’t recommend doing that even with a normal Amiga supply.
      If it’s got something like BlueSCSI it’ll probably be fine, ran my A590 like that for several hours no problem (and from a powerbank too)

    • @dempseydiscus
      @dempseydiscus 3 месяца назад

      @@RobSmithDev Yes its a real drive, Quantum 49mb,, the PSU has these specs: Output 1: +5 vdc 4.0A, Output 2: +12 vdc 2.0A,
      Output 3: -12 vdc 0.5A. Hmm actually I also have an external gotek connected and a KCS Power PC card in the trapdoor expansion. The PSU gets a bit hot I must admit, its a new modern type, not Original.

    • @RobSmithDev
      @RobSmithDev  3 месяца назад +1

      Yeah it’s not recommended to do that kind of Mod with a real drive in there as it will slowly damage the tracks inside the Amiga. I’d swap it out with something solid state or use its proper power supply or you risk damaging the Amiga in the long term

    • @dempseydiscus
      @dempseydiscus 3 месяца назад

      @@RobSmithDev i did'nt know it would be a problem if I used a 'real' hard drive, but I have read about this now, so I will have to get another psu for the GVP, unfortunately I can't use something like a zuluscsi since my KCS Power PC card can only work with a real hard drive, so I am going to undo the mod and get a psu for the GVP, thanks for the info :-)

    WTH did they remove the 12v supply option?????? What happens if you use a PD supply with only the 15v profile?

    • @simondick
      @simondick 7 месяцев назад +1

      If the PSU doesn’t support 12v output then it won’t power up and will just show a red led

    • @RobSmithDev

      It’s less of a problem because the PD3 etc covers that voltage again so works
