    You really sounded like Jan Beta. Well done. Well done.

    Oh my... I was screaming about the different pinout of the floppy power cable to the screen, but you obviously didn't notice. Pure luck that no 12 V supply was connected, that saved a Gotek... ;-)

    I loved this video. The intro really funny (I guess Jan is gonna love it too :)). Was looking forward to the second part. I learned a lot. Thank you so much for sharing (btw the special effect showing before and after is great)

    Great vid. Nice you're keeping these machines alive. We had a 464 back in the 80s, and I lusted after one of these back then, but totally out of my reach. I somehow thought that it was available in Australia, but obviously I'm wrong.

    Amazing job mate. Can't wait for the second part to do the same with my CPC464.

    It might be a good idea to add some large caps before (and maybe after) the 12V regulator. Just to smooth out any peaks caused by the floppy motor spinning up.

    Good thing there was no 12V on your Amstrad, or your Gotek would have become a Stoptek...

    I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but could a 1000uf CAP on the 12V output help with the initial motor startup?

    This is a great fix but my CPC keeps resetting. I using power from an Amstrad ctm640 with no 12v so I guess the step up is causing the reset.. anyone know away around this..?

    Greetings there, down under! Nice to see some fellow Amstrad CPC gets its wings again!
    I guess Amstrad hardware is not too common to find in Australia, right?
    Would you be interested in a French CPC6128plus? I have here one that works, but needs disc belt replacement and general refurbishment but I lack the time to do so.
    So if you would like to have this one for creating some videos, I would be able to send it to Australia.
    Greetings from Germany!

    • @TheRetroChannel

      Yeah there wasn't many Amstrads being sold here. They we're available in some stores but I think most people had already bought a VIC20 or C64, if they had a computer at all.
      I'd certainly be interested in poking at a 6128plus. You can find my email in the about section of the channel

      @@TheRetroChannel Quite similar to here in Germany, Amstrad/Schneider came a bit late into the 8bit home computer market.
      While the VIC20 was almost unheard of here, the C64 was a huge success and the most sold 8bit in the 80s. Commodore was producing C64 computers in West-Germany itself which helped a lot in getting the brand known.
      Sinclair was completely unknown on the Europe continent as they didn't care to sell it to non-English speaking countries it seems.
      Amstrad on the other hand worked with, for example, Schneider in Germany to get the CPC on the market with the Schneider branding who manufactured the CPC under license in Germany.
      What made the CPC very successful even so late in the market was as a teaching/learning computer as schools used them for teaching as the integrated BASIC was much superior to the C64 ones.
      And many teenagers (like me) got the CPC especially as a computer to "not only game" but learn something with it instead of the "only good for games" C64.
      Also small shops used the CPC for bookkeeping etc. as it had its own monitor and was able of high resolution display compared to other 8bit of its time.
      I would really like to know more about the 8bit era in Australia and how successful the different brands were compared to each other.
      And concerning the 6128plus, I will contact you via email.

      Intersting that the VIC20 or VC20 didn't have much success in Germany while the 64 did. Yeah I have a few "Made in W.Germany" 64s here.
      I think it's a similar story here in terms of the British micros. Although I wasn't really paying attention to computers in the early to mid 80s (born in '83), from what I recall most of my friends either had a C64, VIC20, Dick Smith VZ200/300 or perhaps an Atari 400/800. There certainly wasn't many Sinclairs or Amstrads around, although they were being sold in certain stores here from what I've heard. Really the only reason I knew of the CPC or Spectrum was because certain games advertised having versions for those systems on the C64 game boxes or manuals.
      Most schools either had a Apple II, Microbee or maybe a VIC20 in them depending on where you were in Aus, and no doubt depending on what budget the school had. My school had a handful of Apple IIe's, but from what I hear a lot of schools had the South Australian made Microbee's and to be honest I never even knew they existed until recently.

    i have a 6128 in my partially repaired pile, and i powered up the 12v disc with wrong polarity now it doesn't read correctly although it may have been faulty before.

    • @TheRetroChannel
      @TheRetroChannel  Год назад +2

      Ouch, yeah I can't think of a logical explanation as to why they opted for reverse polarity with the 12V. Seems Amstrad really wanted people to use the included monitor and punish anyone who even tried to use something else 😄

      Nice. Those little DC-DC converters are super handy and I figure for just a couple of motors whatever switching noise they generate will be a non issue

      @@TheRetroChannel I have poor RGB and the +3 use 12v on the video encoder so wonder if that is the cause. It's good enough to repair the faulty board so I can deal with that later.

    • @TheRetroChannel
      @TheRetroChannel  Год назад

      Ah, yeah that could create some noise in the RGB. Maybe you could test it out with your handy dandy USB power block. The 6128 even with the stock PSU has some ghosting in the RGB, so it might take a closer look at it some day, see if I can find the cause

    • @leesmithsworkshop
      @leesmithsworkshop Год назад +1

      @@TheRetroChannel I was going to test that Ugreen PSU and I am sure I have a 5v and 12v power supply from an external hard drive box so going to look for that today. Also I have a PICO ATX PSU, but I do remember that being very noisy.

    You really shouldn't power cycle a CPC with a disc in the drive- there's no PWRGOOD write gate on the FDC and it can corrupt the disc if you do that.

    try a diy flex membrane + mesh grid under surface touch screen keyboard

    • @Jkauppa
      @Jkauppa Год назад

      the flex + grid is to make the touch screen work like a keyboard, not a like touch screen, the touch surface can be a display screen with dynamic key images, or just have the flex membrane have the key printed on top, the grid forms the key flex square shapes for the flex surface

    • @Jkauppa
      @Jkauppa Год назад

      also removes all spill mess-up issues, because the whole keyboard is sealed shut
