  • In this video I interview (my first) the highly talented and successful Nick Brine about his experiences at Rockfield and recording with The Stone Roses as they spent a whopping 14 months at Rockfield Studios, Monmouth Wales recording Second Coming.
    We talk about many aspects of that time including his experience of what it was like working with Ian, John, Mani and Reni, some technical aspects, colleagues like Simon Dawson and Paul Schroeder (producers) and many great stories and anecdotes
    Thanks Nick

      I think there are brilliant moments on there because the Roses are amazing, but I do find it a little over the top on the guitar, it's not as effective and musical as the debut. Sometimes it feels like they were trying to put too much on it in a way that feels slightly disjointed. Unpopular opinion I know, but I'm still a massive fan.

    The Roses should really be regarded as a 3 album band because of the quality and amount of stuff they created before their debut was released and before Second Coming was released. The La's are even stranger - they released 1 album but they made enough great material before and since to be regarded as a 4 album band.

    Second Coming is my favourite album of theirs, I play it far more than the debut, the intricate guitar work is just mind blowing, esp Breaking Into Heaven & Love Spreads. Some people just don’t get it because they don’t like the led zeppelin/hard rock influence on some tracks.

  • @tc-ou2zb
    @tc-ou2zb 7 месяцев назад

    Second Coming is an excellent album. I don't quite know what the music industry was expecting. The problem is that there were lots of indie groups releasing albums that year (Oasis, Blur, Pulp, Primal Scream, Dodgy, Portishead, Bush, etc). Second Coming is as good as all of these, so the music industry clearly had an axe to grind with the Roses.

    The '59 Les Paul guitar that is mentioned, wasn't actually Johns'. It was bought by Geffen records when they signed for them. Although John played it non stop for 5 years, he had to give it back when he quit. Not sure if Aziz went on to use it, but it was eventually sold, and ended up in the hands of Bon Jovis' guitarist, Richie Sambora! Who later, sold it himself.

    It’s not that 2nd Coming is okay or rubbish; it arrived six years after their debut, which is a lifetime for a band. They were hot in 89/90 and needed to go back into the studio and release more music. The proof is in the history books: The Stone Roses debut easily makes it onto best-of lists, Second Coming doesn’t.

    What I'd love to know is why can't Ian Brown sing live at concerts? His voice is so clear and pitch perfect on both albums and as far as I know they didn't have pitch correction back then, so WTF happens to him live? Occasionally you'll hear him sound okay on youtube videos but the majority of his vocals are woefully out of tune. On the Made Of Stone DVD you can definitely hear the auto tune on his voice in those black and white rehearsals. That would've been a great question to ask. Sore point I guess?

    • @jcalver80
      @jcalver80  7 месяцев назад

      I've often wondered why he's out live too and have come to the conclusion that because his style is quite breathy and soft in comparison to someone like Liam/Rotten etc he tried to compensate on a very loud live stage. John guitars were up at very high volumes.. he's been way better since using in ear monitors and was absolutely fantastic at the Madison Square garden concerts.
      So I didn't ask because I know Ian can sing really well and it's much easier in a studio.
      You're right. Those rehearsals are drenched in auto tune, I think they probably used much more than they needed. Ian wouldn't have been that out but if you make the note perfect it affects the timbre of the voice, so it's more noticeable.

    • @cinemar
      @cinemar 7 месяцев назад

      Yes it would've been a dodgy question. I was just curious. We don't get Ian Brown here much live in OZ so I've not heard him live recently but I take your word for it. That's an interesting theory on his voice being low and breathy. There's a clip on youtube where he's singing "Tears" live with the Roses in 95 and he's perfectly on pitch so it can be done . One of the greatest bands of all time were also one of the laziest. During their legal issues period they should have had enough material for three albums. They took full advantage of Geffen. Second Coming truly has some great moments. Ten Storey Love Song and How do you sleep are near perfect. Some others tracks feel like slightly polished demos. Yet, I listened to it twice just the other day.
    Selling out Madison Square Garden on June 30th 2016 and killing it that night was a fitting (almost) end.🎉

  • @lucasm3879
    @lucasm3879 2 года назад +2

    I know plenty of people who really like SC, but ultimately the Roses did waste their talent. They won their court case and got the huge advance from Geffen in mid '91. The fact that they took until December '94 to release the next album, with all the bad vibes between them that developed during that period, was a total killing of their momentum. They should have been massive in the early 90's, but the way it worked out was they finally re emerged when Oasis were taking over the music scene. I was thinking recently that the way it worked out was similar to how The Sex Pistols made Led Zep look out dated at the end of the 70's. SC has some great moments but Ian Brown and Mani have said that it was too dark and over blown in places.

    • @jcalver80
      @jcalver80  2 года назад +2

      I'd have to disagree it was like Led Zep and Sex Pistols, firstly because Led Zep had been the biggest selling band of all time throughout the 70s, the Roses never sold massive amounts like them, secondly that Oasis made the Roses look outdated, again I don't agree the Roses were and are loved for what they are and never lost that credibility due to the fact people loved the First album and Fools Gold so much and thirdly because Oasis formed because of the Roses, not true of the Pistols/Led Zep.
      Mani and Ian said that after John had left and felt aggrieved about that, they had no problem playing those tunes on their last tours so you can take those comments as coming from a time they were upset that John had left them.
      However we all have our own opinions and I welcome yours here thanks for watching and commenting

    • @lucasm3879
      @lucasm3879 2 года назад

      @@jcalver80
      I didn't mean Oasis made the Roses music seem outdated, more that they came along and took all the attention away, like punk did. When Oasis released Definitely Maybe, the Roses were pushed away from the spotlight by the fresh new band on the scene. I'm saying this as someone who prefers The Roses to Oasis. I think at their best the Roses were a superior band. All Oasis had that made them stand out was Noel's songwriting and Liam as a frontman.
      Also I'm pretty certain that IB and Mani stand by those comments about disliking parts of SC. They like some tracks like Love Spreads, Breaking, Begging You, but really don't like others. Mani has actually said there are some stinkers on it recently, in the last couple of years.

      The Roses would still have been overshadowed in the charts by Oasis. It has happened to most of the very best, such as The Doors, Pink Floyd. These bands are simply too subtly cool and interesting, with influences often beyond music but in to art, vaudeville, or politics, for Joe Schmo to constantly have on their radar. Oasis, on occasion, were also interesting but they also speak more to the deeply average person of the time who liked a cigarette and some alcohol.

      @Picnicl Tend to agree, Oasis were the extroverted version really and as such got more attention. The more introverted Roses were far more musically interesting but Oasis had more sing along choruses for the everyman. Love them both but The Roses definitely have more to be interested in for the more thoughtful analysts like me. Just my 2 pence worth

    Fun for guitar players to play along to , but my god it's a flawed album. Obviously not Nick's fault.

    Good interview
    But couple of decent tracks
    But far to self indulgent
    They lost their way

    Such a wasteful band. 14 coke fuelled months in a studio to come out with the second coming. They totally blew it.

    The Led Zep comparison is a bit of a lazy 1 that journalists loved to use TBH. John fused so many more influences into his playing style on this album

    • @jcalver80
      @jcalver80  Год назад +2

      Agreed, his playing is Jimmy Page influenced but the album isn't like Led Zeppelin as all. For example Driving South is probably the most Zeppelin it gets guitar wise... but it still doesn't sound like Zep.
      Journos were just sore it wasn't in the same vein as earlier stuff... I love it

      @@jcalver80 it still does feel very much John's album though. Even Ian and Mani felt that way. I suppose Reni left with that as a big reason too.

      Put it this way. Your average indie guitar band player couldn’t play the solo breaks on breaking into heaven.
