    In this video, I make a record player plinth using fairly commonly found equipment in home workshops. I believe this record player is a "Technics SP10 MkII". This is a commission job that I do for my client. I do the woodwork and my client will finish the piece with two pack enamel and install the record player. Follow me on Instagram, and I will put up a photo of the finished plinth when I can, which may be in several months time.

    Excellent, mate. Have an older Lenco so great to see this - mind you but - hand held router...

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks very much. I haven't yet made a plinth for a Lenco, perhaps one day. The processes I used could be replicated using just a hand held router. I use my router table mainly because it throws up less dust and slightly more rigid resulting in a better finished edge.

      i had both a Lenco and a technics sp 10 and i really preferred the lenco, much more natural and musical even its basic base

    Nice work mate, I do like plywood endgrain, I think this would look great with a clear coat.

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  7 лет назад

      I agree, I reckon it would look best as a clear coat. However, I have a strong suspicion that it will end up as a gloss black two pack enamel. Which will be fantastic...for attracting finger marks!

      Thanks. There isn't anymore to see with the rest of the build. I only make the wooden plinth. Then my client, or another of his makers will refurbish and install the record player unit.

    Beautiful work Kuffy, What glue you are using for laminated plinth?
    I am planing something similar for my project TT and will use templates and hand router for the job. I had woodworking shop long ago but have to sell all machinery :(
    Cheers mate

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  7 лет назад

      Thanks. I used Titebond Original for this plinth. I wouldn't recommend Titebond II or III because both of those glues tend to creep a bit too much and will result in each lamination becoming visible months after you have completed the job.

    • @zoxwolf2133
      @zoxwolf2133 7 лет назад

      Thanx for reply, so u are using TB Original often? I want to be sure for the project to keep nice look for long time. I intend to use polyurethane varnish after sanding and filling pores.
      Cheers mate

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  7 лет назад

      I use all sorts of glue depending on the project. For the most part, I use either Titebond original or Titebond III. TbIII is stronger than original and can fill minor gaps without losing strength, but it does creep more. So if I am laminating timber for legs, or a tabletop, I will use original so that the glue doesn't creep out of the joint creating hairline ridges in the finished surface. A good option for a plywood plinth would be to use polyurethane glue but you must be sure to get the mating surfaces clamped together nice and extremely tight because any gaps between the panels ends up in a zero strength bond. I used urea formaldehyde on my other solid timber plinth video because that glue can fill gaps up to about 1.5mm and does not creep at all, but that would be overkill for a ply project. So TB original to be safe, or polyurethane if you are confident with your glue up.

      It's a shame I don't live in Australia you could have the contents of my workshop including a couple of Lathes. I now have MS and it has become a dumping ground. I see people selling plinths on Ebay for Technics SP10s but they live in places like Moldova or old something out of the way. They look like copies of the plinth you were machining.

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  7 лет назад

      The plinth I made was designed by my client, and he likely has copied someone else's design. I do make changes with most of his designs to fit within the constraints of material recovery. For the most part the designs are square blocks of timber with recesses cut out to accept the record player units. That is probably why they all look similar across the internet.

      Sorry for the late reply, been flat out like a lizard drinkin' round here. I have only made ply plinths which get 2 pac painted by someone else, or solid timber plinths which I sometimes finish with shellac or polyurethane or someone else finishes them with whatever they want.

    How do you cut out the template in the first place? By hand or jig saw? BTW, great videos! Keep em comin'

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  6 лет назад

      If the cut lines are straight, I will rough cut them with a jigsaw proud of the line by approximately 1-2mm. Then I will clean them up using a straight edge and a flush trim bit in my router, just doing one line at a time. If the cut line is curved, I rough cut with a jigsaw and then sand or file them smooth. Straight lines need to be actually straight, but curved lines have a little more wiggle room with regards to accuracy.

    • @brett-westgrove-country-music
      @brett-westgrove-country-music 5 лет назад

      @@kuffyswoodwork I think he meant the original jig/template (that doesn't become part of the plinth)... the jig you use to route against for the first layer you take to the router... I had the same question about making the jig. Or maybe I'm just not understanding the answer 😂

    • @brett-westgrove-country-music
      @brett-westgrove-country-music 5 лет назад

      ...Now I'm guessing its similar to how you made that last (top) layer for this plinth (marking, taping on straight edges, routing...)...?

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  5 лет назад

      @@brett-westgrove-country-music My answer to his question was regarding the making of the template which doesn't become part of the final plinth. But yeah, drawing the lines and then using a straight edge and a router to make the template like I did with the final top layer and for the curves I use a jigsaw and then refine the shape with rasps, files and sandpaper etc.

    • @kuffyswoodwork

    What kind of saw is that, mate?

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  5 лет назад

      It's a sliding panel saw from Ledacraft with a 2500mm sliding stroke. It's just a generic chinese machine with a sticker on it "PRIMA 2500". I like it, it serves me well.

  • @uplay09
    @uplay09 6 лет назад

    Why you were flip the panel after each cut ?

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  6 лет назад

      Because my rip fence isn't setup 100% parallel to the saw blade. So if I use the rip fence to crosscut the panels, they end up slightly out of square. it's something I should fix, but it's also something which only costs me tiny amounts of time so I don't worry about it.
