Rocket-powered jet aircraft were pioneered in Germany. The first aircraft to fly under rocket power was the Lippisch Ente, in 1928.[3] The Ente had previously been flown as a glider. The next year, in 1929, the Opel RAK.1 became the first purpose-built rocket plane to fly. The turbojet was invented in 1939, independently by Frank Whittle and later Hans von Ohain. The first turbojet aircraft to fly was the Heinkel He 178 V1 first prototype of the German Air Force, the Luftwaffe, on August 27, 1939 in Rostock (Germany).[4]

Beautiful car, love the interior, the dash styling, the upholstery. Its amazing how close a fully optioned Olds 98 or Buick Electra was to a lower to mid trim Cadillac in terms of features, fit, finish, size etc The real difference were the engines, transmissions, and the styling. The Oldsmobile looked pretty tame compared to a 1959 Cadillac or Buick though.
The Olds was a more handsome conservative looking car to me. The Electra with it slanted front fenders and rear quarter fins, and the Cadillac with it's Batmobile tail fins, were out there.
These are the voyages of the starship, Oldsmobile, whose 98 year mission... Captain, one of out high beam deflector shields is burned out. Compared to the 1958 Olds 98, this one has a modest amount of chrome trim. : )
My dad repaired car radios,TV’s etc . They didn’t have glass tubes but metal encased variations have no idea who repairs them now they required frequent repair and were hard to work on
That things a work of art. They make great looking mild customs. I'm mean look at that steering wheel. Ill trade my 1960 Cadillac steering wheel for one of those. Mine need minor outer ring resto. But complete.
I don't remember the 60 Caddy steering wheel, but I remember the 59 Caddy's steering wheel. Right in the middle of it, the hub was shaped like a small pointed torpedo aimed right at your sternum. Not a good design choice!

Without a doubt the high point of American auto mobile design and manufacture....an absolute work of art. The fifties in a car.the late fifties gave us some of the most extravagant, well built and beautiful cars ever made anywhere.

You now, maybe, just maybe why Olds went out of business was the fact that an Oldsmobile buyer really did want their parents Oldsmobile's & not the crap we were presented with? Oldsmobile's really were Oldsmobile's right up till 1976 (last year of the 455 engine).
A Rocket car. We had a 59 Olds station wagon and made many long trips in it, plus Boy Scout camping trips. Unfortunately no air conditioning and it ate tires. But it was reliable and a great family car. A 98 convertible is a real looker, but the 2-door hardtop was sweet. Thanks for the video.
My folks bought a new 1959 Olds convertible. The first day they drove it home I wanted to sleep in it, I was only 7 at the time.......they laughed and said no. It had a lot of power on the road, a great cruiser.
That's a beautiful 1959 Oldsmobile 98 I seen what you did there how you showed the back when the jet went over to emphasize the rocket and jetstyle theme of the car that's awesome my dad had a 1966 Oldsmobile 98 and it featured a 425 four-barrel rocket and that thing would scoot but nothing is gorgeous as the car you got there it did come in a similar color however my dad painted it red and since he was a professional at what he did it was beautiful but I wish that he would have kept it the original gold color scheme I believe that he bought it for $400 back in around 1984-5 but the car would be worth a lot of money nowadays as it was almost as pristine as that gorgeous Oldsmobile Rocket you have there what a wonderful iconic car of the era I would love to take that car to a drive-in movie and an A&W restaurant where you can eat in your car

Lincoln brought that design back in the 1970s. Their's was red all the way across.
Amazing ride!
This is the kindof car I like to see at shows because it's different and trully a piece of art.
Yes me too! Not new Challengers and Chargers. Thanks for watching Samspace81
in the late 60's my dad had a 4 door I drove it every weekend in high school for my "dates" on the weekends ..fast and had the "Wonderbar' radio !
Great stuff Carl, thanks for sharing that memory.
Fitting that jet flew over as the walk-around of the outside started...jets were the major inspiration of designers in Detroit at the time.
I'm glad you noticed that, it gave me goosebumps when I was filming it! Thanks so much for following Samspace81. I went to Detroit for the first time last year and got the same nostalgic feeling.
My first car was a 98. They were a real sleeper . Tried my out I went to 120mph on the speedometer and it just keep climbing . I would be scared to do that today. Still my all time fav.
Lee Petty won the inaugural Daytona 500 in a 59 Olds - lapping at around 135 mph.
I loved how the radio took so long to come on. Awesome! 📻
Warming up ❤️
Beautiful car, love the interior, the dash styling, the upholstery.
Thanks Aaron for watching
The Olds was a more handsome conservative looking car to me. The Electra with it slanted front fenders and rear quarter fins, and the Cadillac with it's Batmobile tail fins, were out there.
Awesome Car. Remember it well.
Thanks for sharing.👏
You bet
These are the voyages of the starship, Oldsmobile, whose 98 year mission... Captain, one of out high beam deflector shields is burned out.
Compared to the 1958 Olds 98, this one has a modest amount of chrome trim. : )
Ride Captain ride 😎
Wow everything about these old classics the engineering the styling amazing
I agree 100. Thanks so much for joining the Samspace81 classic car channel
Absolute work of art
My uncle bought an all white 98 holiday in 1959 and it was beautiful and powerful. What a statement design.
He had style & taste in cars
Was that a tube radio? Took a while for audio. If so, that's great preservation.
My dad repaired car radios,TV’s etc . They didn’t have glass tubes but metal encased variations have no idea who repairs them now they required frequent repair and were hard to work on
@@Dog.soldier1950 my 58 CADILLAC does have glass tubes, and metal ones also.
Better than Bluetooth! Ha ha!
I really like that speedometer. Truly a unique concept to see in 1959...
Me too, glad you enjoyed this Olds and I appreciate you subscribing to Samspace81
Veyron? Forget it! THIS is fantastic: american cars from the 50's! I really loooooooooooooooooove! Best regards from Brazil.
Much love from Texas, Roberto! I appreciate you following the Samspace81 classic car channel.
So beautiful, when I was a little kid my parents owned the '59 Eighty Eight, the trunk was like it's own house! hahaha , This Ninety Eight is a dream!!!!!
Flagship machine
My late brother had a 59. I was so amazed as a kid how the speedometer changed colors as you went..... especially past 90!.....it turns white!!!
A wonderful automobile. Work of Art. 👍🇺🇸
@samspace 81::Thanks sam===These 59 OLDSMOBILES were STILL SEEN up to around APRIL 1973 I remember allrhough you,d see MAYBE 2 or 3 toward the fall of 1973 then ALL GONE!!! Allways give cars a good 15 or possibly 16 YEAR RUN before thier FINAL DRIVE BY!!!!! Today we notice the 2008 tru 2024 16 year run as MOST 2007 and backwards year cars are ALL GONE☆☆☆☆
1959 had to be the pinnacle for Cars! Nothing ever surpassed that year before or after that year!
Old car
I always felt that 1959 was "THE year, in so many ways: things seemed to go downhill from then on.
@@None-zc5vg Yeah, I was 11 or 12 that year and it was the first year I got really interested in cars. I thought the 59 cars were really nicely designed, especially the GM models like this Olds.
One of my all time favorites the 59 Olds
One of the best designs of the 1950s. Thanks for sharing this.
I have had 63 66 and 63s could not kill them and motor pts we're interchangble back then. Look on the prices now for one.
Truth and thank you
The timing of the jet couldn't be more spot on.
Thought same when I filmed that scene
I love the speedometer when it changes color so cool its just like thermometer
dat grill! so Art Deco, especially around the headlights
Wow that interior is amazing!!!
Reminds me of our 2 door ‘59 Caddy. Same chassis. Learned to drive in it. BTW, proper horn sound needs to be dual tone, so two horns plz.
Good stuff Frank
I’m so old, I remember these things driving around! When they were older of course.
and I appreciate you watching Brad
What a beautiful automobile!
Really is
That rear end is surely one of a kind...unique 🤙
You know it Andy, really appreciate your comment & viewership
back when u could tell what car someone was driving! to bad the art of making cars are not the same these days!!
That is the coolest and most gorgeous car I've ever seen. Thing oozes America just sitting there. Wow! I'm in Awe. Love everything about it. Wouldn't change a thing.
Me either! Appreciate you watching
0:41 that plane overhead sound was perfect timing.
When I filmed that, its been years but I remember thinking the same thing lol thanks for watching, Mr Eighty
Cars were beautiful in the 50's. So much character. Father had an 88. Loved the speedometer. Started at green. Then orange. Think at 65 mph it went red. Went over 100 mph through Timbuktu, AZ population 4.
Love it MFB, great comment and memories. Appreciate your viewership
Nothing like that "Old car" smell.....
Best smells, old cars, and NEW cars, lol.
Truth
Without a doubt the high point of American auto mobile design and manufacture....an absolute work of art. The fifties in a car.the late fifties gave us some of the most extravagant, well built and beautiful cars ever made anywhere.
I agree with you Joe. I appreciate you watching the Samspace81 channel
My god, what a WONDERFUL thing!!!
My pleasure to share it Roberto, really appreciate you watching Samspace81
@@samspace81 American cars from the 50's are my favorites. I really love it! Best regards from Brazil.
My grandmother had one of these which my aunt inherited in 1969 we rode this four-door car from Brown county Indiana to clearing Pennsylvania I do recall it having an exceptional ride and I consider it I bet flashing with all the Chrome and embellishments my cousin Tom finally ended up with this car
Thanks for sharing
You now, maybe, just maybe why Olds went out of business was the fact that an Oldsmobile buyer really did want their parents Oldsmobile's & not the crap we were presented with? Oldsmobile's really were Oldsmobile's right up till 1976 (last year of the 455 engine).
+eldorado62 yeah-- that idiotic commercial killed off the remaining loyal Olds fans
Thanks for sharing! Glad you enjoyed the video too. Enjoy the channel, lots coming up on Samspace81
We owned the 59 two door Cadillac. Same greenhouse. Same interior hardware on door panels. Same door handles. Same X frame chassis. $4500 new.
Thank you for sharing
My folks bought a new 1959 Olds convertible. The first day they drove it home I wanted to sleep in it, I was only 7 at the time.......they laughed and said no. It had a lot of power on the road, a great cruiser.
Wonderful, appreciate you watching and commenting 😀 love hearing these kinds of stories. Dad had taste
@@samspace81 Nope, it wasn't Dad, Mom saw it and declared that was "THE ONE". They were young, both worked, and were bullet-proof back then.
Love that
Back when cars had their own zip codes
I had to 2 1960 Olds one super88 bubble top and Dynamic 88 convertible many fun memories love those cars
I'm a 1999 Generation Z and I want fins to make a permanent return to our American automobiles!
Agreed!!!!!
Seawolf And the real wheel-well skirts/covers. Idk why they ever stopped those?!?
YTjndallas yes, those too!
YTjndallas
Yes I agree
I love the way you think 🤔
Love it Paul, thanks for sharing that great visual. I've got a new Olds video coming out tonight you'll like too - SAM
@@samspace81 I can't wait to see it's am I look forward to all your videos great classic cars wonderful memories and awesome awesome awesome vehicles I hope me and all your other friends will be able to enjoy this amazing video tonight thank you

Golly! Never seen a car so beautiful!
where did Detroit go wrong?
Fuction over Form nowadays. There will never be another era like this. Thanks for checking it out and enjoy my RUclips channel. I'm keeping these old cars alive.
Wow gorgeous car!..seen a mild custom 59 olds 88 this year at cruisin the coast
Very cool!
I like its dashboard
Futuristic isn't it!? Thanks for checking out this Olds and enjoy the channel.
Omg this car is beautiful...and the jet sound in the back ground really set it off !!!😁🚀SUNDAY CAR!!!!
Thanks for watching & yes, great timing for sure
@@samspace81 455 or 350 engine that a car . First car I learned to drive was 75 olds. My daddy's love 80 models too. I hope Oldsmobile make a come back . I have one of the last 96 Oldsmobile. That 88 Olds Regency was like driving a Cadillac.
It’s beautiful your car 🚘 congratulations 🍾
Thanks so much for watching Samspace81 Jorge, sure appreciate you. I just love these old cars.
I'd like to see a rag top model. Awesome interstate car worthy of any road trip. Love it.
memorable ride
After their horrible excess of chrome laden monstrosities in 1958, GM hit it out of the park in '59! This gold and ivory example is gorgeous, and the photography is great, too! 😎👍
Really appreciate you watching 👀, love this era
Spectacular sheet metal work.
Glad you like it!
