Chandani - The Daughter of the Elephant Whisperer - Go Wild

  • The 16-year-old Chandani has a burning desire: She wants to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a mahout. A Mahout takes care of elephants. Chandani’s father Sunamabanda is one of the most experienced mahouts in Sri Lanka and chief-mahout in the Pinnawala elephant orphanage. He does not have a son to which he could pass on the family knowledge from many generations.
Against the other mahouts’ will, he decides to give his daughter a chance. He gives her responsibility for the young elephant Kandula. By working with this young elephant every day, Chandani must demonstrate that she is serious about her wish to become a mahout and that she is willing to learn the complicated tasks a mahout must know. But because Chandani is the first girl in a male profession, everyone doubts her abilities and the other mahouts strongly oppose her plans.
Outside her family, the wildlife ranger Mohammed becomes the only one to support her. He takes her into the jungle, shows her the world of elephants in the wilderness. On one of these trips, Mohammed and Chandani save a little elephant baby from its certain death.
Strengthened by this experience and her mentor’s support, she makes tremendous progress in the work with ‘her’ little elephant Kandula and develops a real emotional attachment to this animal. So she succeeds in persuading her father of her talent. As the first woman in Sri Lanka’s history, Chandani gains the permission to take part in the ceremonial and traditional elephant Perahera. She and the festively decorated Kandula participate in this religious elephant procession with pride, along with those who always doubted that she would ever become a mahout.
However, shortly thereafter, there is another test for Chandani. Kandula is now old enough to be released into the wild. Chandani is very sad, but she has learnt that the wilderness is the world into which her ‘little’ friend really belongs.
With tears in her eyes, she lets him go. But Chandani - the first female mahout in Sri Lanka’s history - knows that there are many new tasks and adventures waiting for her.

Great documentary! a lesson to learn. Wild animals should be left in their natural habitat, it was wrong for Chandani's father to buy the baby elephant, and have it tied in his front garden, as if it was a dog. So cruel? I am glad the law caught up with him and he had to return the elephant to the wild, that is where the baby elephant belongs. Chandani, please do not even dream of training an elephant to do tricks or use him for a circus, that is totally against nature and so cruel. I do not believe any animal being chained or tired, even a dog! Chandani, since you have a natural flare and an animal lover, please become a wildlife vet and help injured animals (wild elephants), you certainly have the knack for it! Why do they have so many thick chains around the poor elephant's neck?

Elephants are wild animals and should be in the wild. They are not domesticated work horses or dogs and even horses and dogs shouldn’t be tied up to a tree all day alone without companionship. Elephants are extremely sensitive animals that definitely shouldn’t be separated from their parents and extended family members as they don’t thrive well away from them. I also don’t like seeing them hit on their heads with sticks. Lek Chalet of Thailand is the true Elephant whisperer and her methods should be observed and taught as she lives with them and treats them with the upmost respect and dignity that they deserve. It’s sad to say that we as humans for some unknown reason feel the need to dominate the animals of this world for our own needs and entertainment instead of letting them be free to live in harmony with us.😔

I wanted to publish them and that is why they demanded that I did not publish them, so that they still could get grants. It was atrocious!

Unfortunately the Hindus in Kerala temples enslave bull elephants torture them in a very painful manner for years to break their spirit to parade them at temple festivals the hi dus are so mean low mentality they pul the hairs on the tail end of the elephant and sell them to Hindus to make gold bangles embedded with elephant hair for their children... And the mahout ties a cheap black Chinese plastic brush on the Tal end to make it look like hairs. Such shitty shameless types of no conscience are only in Hindu people running temples in kerala profiting from enslaving intelligent noble elephants transporting from temple to temple on trucks through the heavily polluted congested roads... Those elephants should be in their forest habitat not in the clutches of these heartless Hindus. So many have died under torture by the Hibdus in temples.

Elephants are so sacred to Sinhala people. From The "great Kadol(B.C 161)" of king Dutugemunu. Lakhs of elephants were used in wars to protect Buddhism against Tamil Hindu invaders from South India. That's how Buddhism still exists in Sri Lanka. Because of that, Sinhala people have respect to elephants and tuskers. As a remembrance of the tuskers who sacrificed their lives to the protection of Buddhism, still the casket is being driven by an elephant.

Chandani's Father the "Mahout" says he bought the baby elephant/got it from the jungle which is totally illegal in Sri Lanka. Traditionaly buddihst temples always had elephants in the Temple grounds, this practice too is being wiped out so these majestic animals can live in the wild.
Its sad because i grew up in Ceylon and Elephants were always around us where ever we went they were on the main roads, jungles and some front yards with their mahouts. These animals are very valuble and very well looked after by the owners with a dedicated mahout that even sleeps alonside the elephant.
There is no animal cruelty involved, this animal can destroy its owner and handler if it wishes to do so but it is happy being pampered, washed, scrubbed and well fed. Lets have a balance. In Australia you drive along a country road and you see signs beware of Kangaroos, in my beautiful country of Sri Lanka we have sign that say beware of Elephants, both unique animals but one is being poached in the wild!

I saw hitting with sticks and a pole with a nasty hook on it . go to Elephant Nature park and see how elephants should be treated . Think how you would feel being whipped with a stick or have your ears torn by hooks or being chained never able to move more than in short shuffles . We need to treat our wild family with respect . I also see a baby elephant being sent to a place where he could have a chance to be part oa wild herd again . I hope that more elephants will join him . I hope that mahoots become paid guardians of the wild herds and lay down the hooks and sticks in favour of loving touches and food delivery. Chandani I hope you become a mahoot that will teach others the right way to treat our wild elephant family with love and respect.

It’s sad that your elephant was taken to that orphanage. I’ve seen videos from tourists that show how the workers abuse the elephants. Especially the 3 legged elephant. That tease him with his prosthetic leg. They hit him with a thin stick on his damaged leg real hard right were it hurts him the most. Then throw the prosthetic limb down on the wrong and the poor elephant can’t pick it up to put it on its leg and they don’t help him. They also hit the other babies for no reason. Horrible place for those elephants to live. God bless them.

@@avishkarandika4473 please do research as well. I’ve seen videos showing abuse. I’ve talked to other ethical parks and they confirmed that they have tried for years to change how the Ellie’s are treated there but others turn a blind eye. 🥰🥰🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘❤️❤️❤️❤️

A question, how do the get the elephants to be so docile and trained to be ridden? I see they are chained up also. I have heard of breaking the animals spirit. But it looks not to be the case here? Anyone answer this please? 🙏

Yes they do that. It's called the crush. Many are trying to stop this bc it is unethical and to get them to be free. They deserve freedom too

mainly pinnawala is worlds largest elephant rehabilitation center in the world basiccally they take injured or life dangered elephants from wild and cure them and if those elephant can survive in wild they release them and the babies who are born in pinnawala definitly sends to wild but due human elephant conflicts they recive more elephant than they free so the heard getting bigger also there are elephants who cant survive in wild so they will stay at pinnawala
as a sri lankan to see elephant is chained not suprises me actually there are some elephants who willingly put them on also the chains are neccesary for aggressive elephant mainly to the males because they can quickly come into heat
