The amazing thing about this version is a close-to-50year-old Malfitano conjuring up a spoiled, obsessed 16-year-old teenager.
Anja Silija powerful voice, wow beautiful
Thanks to a good friend in 1997 this was the first time I saw and heard Terfel. I was impressed by his Jochanaan and Luc Bondy's staging.

Terfel is phantastic, a perfect Jochanaan. Malfitano does a great job, her dancing abilities and dramatic acting support the good singing, Silja can´t be anything else but a perfect Herodias. Directing and conducting are flawless
Catherine Malfitano is wonderful.
It is a performance from Covent Garden in 1997. I remember very well. Terfel performed the Baptist before under Sinopoli's baton.

Wow, Anja Silja and Bryn Terfel together on Stage? Bryn must have been around 32 at that time. And I remember Silja singing Kundry in Wagner's Parsifal at Bayreuth as far back as 1962!
Silja never sang Kundry in Bayreuth (and I doubt she performed the role somewhere else, though I'm not certain about that). The only role in Parsifal she performed was one of Klingsor's Flower Maidens.

Great performance. Malfitano is my favorite modern interpreter of the role, and it's great to see Silja as Herodias--an opera singer with star quality, though the voice is no longer what it was.
Well, Silja´s career was/is very long and she was able to keep the quality of her voice for a very long time.
@@Altonahh10 'Quality of her voice'!? You've got to be kidding. Silja's voice was always bleached in color, strident in tone and wobbly in the extreme. She owed her career to three main elements:
1) In the beginning, the novelty of her extreme youth. Making her debut in Braunschweig at the age of fifteen, she astonished audiences by singing every coloratura role under the sun, including Zerbinetta and Olympia. Five years later, she was singing Elsa, Elisabeth, Eva and other roles at Bayreuth.
2) Her long affair with Wieland Wagner. He was besotted with her, and foisted her on such otherwise tasteful conductors as Böhm and Sawallisch, who tolerated her toneless caterwauling in order to advance their own careers. When Wieland died, Silja suddenly announced she would no longer sing Wagner, as it brought back too many sad memories. What a coincidence.
3) Her habit of attaching herself to prominent conductors who would cast her in their productions: first Andre Cluytens, with whom she had an affair; and then Christoph von Dohnanyi, whom she married and subsequently divorced. By this time, her status as a grande dame of the stage was more or less established, and she could count on her cachet as a former Wagner concubine to give her entry to the top opera houses, whose Intendants were willing to overlook her increasingly unstable and wayward 'singing'. But of 'quality of voice' per se, there is none and there never has been. The woman is a colossal fraud.

There is something vaguely resembling it 1.03 on, but don't get too excited.
The "dance" is open to interpretation - but it's all there.

old and bitter
This production and direction is fairly shitty, my goodness. Terfel is fabulous, Malfitano still in a Home Run in this role with well placed singing and exciting acting. Silja is a perfect Herodias. But why Riegel as Herodes, why? It's an annoying performance, he's acting like a clown and sings very often completely wrong and free composing stuff, no need to talk about heavy pitch problems. That was bad.
What's wrong? I didn't see the strip dance !
