I just bought brand new ps2 slim never used. It’s reading some disks which are brand new sealed games and other sealed game with disc error. It’s reading ps1 discs fine. Any help?
Hi there! The reading of PS1 disks indicates that CD is fine so, the problem is now with DVD laser intensity only. Try this fix/test with the DVD potentiometer clockwise as described - small increments on DVD potentiometer screw only. It might help! First, try to clean the lens with isoprop alcohol and water (50%-50). Thank you for watching!

Hi, it is good thinking indeed - the battery replacement. Sounds like the video output settings are lost because battery is off and needs reset. Check output config though first, to see if output matches TV settings and capabilities though, it might be CRT with limited resolution? - like 540p or something - then replace the battery - usually comes in green plastic cover. :-)
@@CyberhugTechnologies Nice sir, thanks again for the knowledge.. will try that!... its my lucky day to find ur channel.. my pleasure to subscribe.. good luck with new video sir👍
dude i don't know why but after some attempts of calibration my tester is not reading DVD resistance, only CD, did i damaged DVD potentiometer contacts or what? Anyways i think that i can calibrate it without measuring it, just checking the position of the screw... Anyways it isn't that important because i bought some fortuna freemcboot memory cards with mx4sio for my ps2 slim, but damn i need that laser working because of nostalgia, lol.
Hi - good question but all that happens is the laser gets weak beam over time so, less resistance is needed on the circuit in order to boost it up a bit. Sometimes, like you said, the potentiometer gets dirty and so, needs some moving but that is rare.
Could this potentially help with stuttering/lag with my PS2 Slim? I've cleaned the laser and it's reading discs just fine, but I'm experiencing stuttering/lag when playing games. Thank you for your video and your help! Edit: I just attempted this after asking the question with my Slim model 70011 and it worked! PS2 isn't choppy and load times are incredibly quick. You saved me from having to replace the laser. Thank you so much!!!
Thank you for the video, this seems to be really helpful :) The problem on my PS2 is a bit different so I'm on the fence if I should try this method. It can read PS1 games and double layer DVDs, but no single layer PS2 game. I tried Xenosaga 1 and several video DVDs and it plays them just fine. For every other PS2 game the game starts spinning and the laser makes some noises and it quits with a reading error. Do you have a suggestion for this problem? Is it useful to mess with the potentiometer in that case or should I try something else?
@@CyberhugTechnologies Thank you for your answer! I only heard that grinding noise you describe once or twice, most of the time it's just a quiet sound where i thought the laser tries to position itself and just stops after a few seconds. What I tried right now was starting the console with open disc lid to see if the disc spins. With a PS2 game it accelerates and decelerates a few times, decelerating makes a "clicky" noise and thats all that happens. I did what you described in the video about the grinding noise, just to be sure. Also, I did some more tests with discs after this: Audio disc: endless "reading disc" Video DVD: works PS2 game: short "reading disc" followed by "disc cannot be read" DL-PS game: starts fine Sorry about this monster of a comment, I'm just really clueless about what it happening in my PS2 :( All the solutions I can find online only talk about how their PS2s can't read Dual Layers anymore or no DVDs at all.
@@ShiroiRyuLuga Hi nd thanks for sharing symptoms here :-) Sounds to me like your laser is about to die honestly - the only way to be sure is to go ahead and turn the potentiometers clockwise as shown. If problem persists then the voltage trick cannot do much since, the laser is too old to even support more current. That's why it goes fast then slow rotation again as it thinks it found no disk (weak beam).
My PS2 only plays blue discs. I'm working on getting it to play silver discs today. I tried this and, though it's still not playing them, it's now making a sound like it's trying to read them when before it didn't make any sound. Should I keep turning clockwise? I've seen other tutorials that says to turn counterclockwise. Is there a point that I could turn too much and completely ruin it? Thanks!
The particular model gets little more voltage clockwise. You need to double check laser model eg. pvr-802w or other? turn carefully though every time, we do not want to over-voltage :-) I recommend turn by quarter every time tops. Counterclockwise i have only tried when repairing Sega Saturn btw. and worked fine.
Thanks for the specifics 💯💯💯 Still thinking about doing this put a blue disk in the other day and it seems to be fine for whatever reason but who knows how long that will last =,=
Hi, it can be the solution, yes. Strange noises might be not enough power to read the disk so, it tries forever - therefore less resistance might need to be adjusted (like in this video) but also might be problem with motor spinning (rare). If this doesn't work - after lowering the resistance level, probably the whole mechanism is dead and needs replacement. Thanks!
Hi there and thanks for watching! Sure it will, it is better to leave it inside tho, even if not working properly so, do not detach it completely, if possible. The other option - if you have the good old fat one, is to attach the network interface on the back and attach a hard disk full of games :-)
My chiped ps2 slim reads some burned dvds fast and some it struggles. Freshly burned on a verbatim at 4x speed. Any tips? Is it just a case of adjusting the laser ? Or i have to try this with multitool and adjust the resistance to 800?
Hi, i would go for the adjustment first and see what happens, just a little turn is enough to check the problematic DVDs. i believe the latest DVDs are far more "thin" and with less layered material on top - not like the older ones. Of Course, resistance adj. is second option for sure!
@@CyberhugTechnologies I have checked out the DVDs laser resistance and it was set at 1150 , and it reads the disks, the only disk that it didnt work properly is San Andreas, but maby its the ISO or it needs a dual layer dvd. As far as i understand the higher the resistance set the lower the power its going thru the laser so it will last a long time. I have also tried setting it to 850 and still got issues with san andreas and no other game. So i set it back to 1150 and its runing great. Seems like a have a realy good laser that doesnt need much power to read. I have also found this useful document about adjusting the resistance www.geocities.ws/link642k/RECALIBRATING-YOUR-PS2-LASER.pdf
@@Gixxer983 The best description i got so far and by far! Thank you for link and the perfect steps described. Maybe it is an ISO thing after all, true. i wouldn't worry too much for a single title, the console can last for many years to come with proper adjustments. Thanks!
I adjusted my dvd up and down in small increments, but it still wont read. I don't have any ps1 games to test, although it does play audio CDs fine. it makes a grinding noise every time the dvd spins and it stops spinning after 30-45 seconds. Every video so far hasn't helped so if anyone has any suggestions I am open to discussion.
Hi there, please, double-check the motor movement, usually grinding comes from there while the laser tries to find the spot to start reading from and stops if it is not possible to start reading - this might be the case. There is a shaft from the motor to the lens part which does the movement up and down, Add some graphite lubricant around the shaft - just a couple of drops. The lens might need change after all, this solution shown just extends the reading ability of the lens but at some point the beam might be so weak over time that there is not much we can do other than a new laser. Hope this helps and thanks!
@@CyberhugTechnologies I took it to one of my friends who works specifically on things like this and he said that the laser had died haha. Luckily new lasers are cheap. Thank you for the help anyways! I am sure the reply you made might help someone else who does not have a dead laser!
:-D right! It is easy, flip it over, remove all screws you find, flip it back and remove top cover. PS2 is not complicated like PS3/PS4 which can be a pain.. Thanks!
Hi there! It is all about trial 'n Error but if you wish you can attach a multi-meter to test ~ around 600 Ω or less. The logic and the idea is the same like the normal DVDs, less resistance, better flow of data bits... Please, bare in mind it is a fix that works temporarily - after 2-3 adjustments the laser will be completely dead - but this might take a year or two! thanks for watching mate!...
Hi, I guess the laser reached the point that needs replacement - sounds like it - there is a certain point you can't do much and it is ok i guess after so many years in operation- i would suggest another attempt though! Cheers and thank you!
Is it normal when I turn on gran turismo which is more scratched than need for speed and goes and the need for speed doesn't? (used by google translator) 😀
Hi, yes it happens. The scratches is not the only factor and might just be on the surface and not deeper scratches. On the other hand, just a single deep scratch on the other disk can make it unusable.. But of course, try to find the right point where the potentiometer screw should be in order to make both work! Thank you!
I recently bought and changed laser in ps2 slim because last owner said it is only for replacement. And with new laser some games work others don't. Ps1 games plays ok, ps2 games with scratches works and perfect ones without any scratch don't. I am so confused right now. This type of adjustment have sens on brand new laser?
I have seen this happening, this is a behavior of cheap imitations of lasers not the Sony ones and so not much you can do - Chances are if you experiment with it, it will not be able to read that much of the disks.
@@CyberhugTechnologies There is 3 type of laser for ps2 slim right now on the market. PWR-802W, KHM-430A and SPU-3170. Only two of them is comompatibile with my scph 70004 mechanism: PWR (which i have right now) and KHM. Or maybe there is more lasers out there that i do not know about. Can You recommended one?
@@RetroMatter PWR is just about right. For me, the most well designed mechanism of all. It is just a matter of quality as they are produced massively and shipped in bulk quantities. Thank you so much for watching!
Tried clockwise for both but then when putting back, screw on the part connecting the laser to the twist rod won’t stay, keeps turning when screwing in. Is there a way to fix that? Would gluing in place help?
These are very tiny screws indeed and it happens so often! yes, glue would do but better to find a same size screw as a spare, only a bit thicker! Thanks for watching!
Here's another useful tip if you are in the possession of a PS2 slim: Take 1½" of thin sticky tape ( Scotch® or related ), fold the first inch together and stick the sticky remaining ½" to the stirdy side of the ribbon cable. Trim off excess if neccessary. You made yourself a tool-free pull tab in case you need to do some more adjustments. Once you're done, just leave them inside, might come in handy at a future point. - Bandi

Hello, my PS2 is in great condition but hasn’t been used in years. When starting it up, it plays audio CD’s and DVD movies just fine! But it does not play any PS2 games at all. Is this still worth trying to see if it fixes it?
Hi lonely, try please to check PS1 games in the first place. Then, check the condition of the DVD-Game disk. If it plays DVD movies, it is really weird that games won't work. You can try PS1 first to identify which potentiometer needs adjustment (i doubt the CD one) so, then you can slightly move DVD potentiometer to the right a little bit.
@@CyberhugTechnologies man, it worked! I followed the video and adjusted the DVD potentiometer ever so slightly and every game is working flawlessly now. Thank you for responding, you are a legend!
Not sure if you’ll answer but my problem is it’ll work with one game and I switch and it says disk error and it won’t read it and after I clean it the game works again how do I fix this? I feel like I have to clean the laser just to have it work 🤔
Hey Noe, yes it might happen, first thing is to check cd scratches underneath, one might have plenty and the other one none? second thing is clean laser with a bit of isoprop alcohol and see what happens. Hope this helps!

My Ps2 laser works fine but the engine doesn't move at all and I bought the complete assembly that came with a new laser and new engine and still dosen't spin. Any recommendations??
Hey, turn it the other way around, it should do :-) in many cases, the laser is so weak over time that can only be replaced - if it could make it though with some dvds, turn it slightly the other way around, little by little as try n' error...
What to do when ps1 games dont work but ps2 games do? The ps1 games work sometimes if its upside down so I would rather fix the problem before it becomes an issue for ps2 games as well since I had a previous ps2 that did the same thing

So I adjusted the DVD screw on the back of the laser twice and the ps2 games still did not work. Should I keep turning the screw or do you have any other suggestions ?? My unit was working fine until i recently dropped it so not sure if this screw is relevant or not .
Hi Dill and thanks for watching. The mishap with the PS2 drop sounds irrelevant with the laser screw adjustment, at least for the purpose of it. The whole laser mechanism likes to be correctly aligned with the cd/dvd surface. at the same time the mechanism has this little "eye" to read the surface of the disk and pass it over to the circuit. There are many tiny little wires there to carry the signals. Bottomline is, i think you need a new laser - the whole thing - from ebay or somewhere - Hope this helps!
I tried it, and I cleaned the lense, but it still doesn't read dvds of games which are not original (dvd-5), while the orignals work no problem. I don't get why cause back then it used to read everything just fine :/
Try small increments and it will work for sure - just be patient as these potentiometers are so tiny and small increase/decrease is only needed! thank you for watching!!..
Hi Pano, if it is not working after all then it is a sign the laser can only be replaced at this point as, even the voltage regulation is not good enough for it. It happens when the beam is so weak over the years and the adjustment cannot help further, thanks!
My ps2 has a new optical drive and still doesn't work, my problem is the disc motor or atleast the signal to the motor, because the laser works fine but the motor doesn't spins at all, and i tested the new one in another ps2 and it was working.
Hi, sounds like the motor needs to be replaced then - but first - check the ribbon that supplies the motor with power and the instructions to start/stop... maybe only this ribbon cable is the problem!
Ahoj Marek, Sounds to me the ribbon cable at the back of the laser has been moved? This carries the instruction signal to the motor so, it starts the right time when disk is detected. Check the ribbon cable connection :-)
@@CyberhugTechnologies its connected well. When i rotate the cd and dvd laser back how was it before now the ps2 start make loud sound and disc doesnt spin and i tried music disc and silver and blue discs and no one works
@@marekbystriansky2220 Then the motor is not adjusted right (the long screw 'golden metal thing' is making the noise as it doesn't go up and down and tries to find the right path to move the laser right). This metal should have excellent fit/contact with the motor.

Hi there and thanks for watching, i hope this helps. Please, check laser model first but in any case, this solution can be applied on every model and even on audio cd players or dvd movie players.
Hi Mad, you just need to make small adjustments and play with the screws in small increments - little by little clockwise - what is giving you trouble ? maybe you turned more?
I tried this method and my ps2 went from not reading some discs to not reading any discs and makes a loud grinding sound... I was not made for fixing electronics lmao.
I think I broke mine, I tried screwing it and I placed the laser back I didn't put it all back together left it open but now it won't load any cds at all.
Hi, something happened during re-assembly - make sure please, the ribbon is firmly into place (connector), otherwise instructions signals and power won't reach the laser head.
@@CyberhugTechnologies I think the ribbon cable is actually protruding more - scratching the disc and causing it to make this noise. I'm not really sure how to fix it though as pressing it down wouldn't help
Hi, typical loose placement it is - happens to everyone, watch for fastening the disk correctly into the central ring! Needs to be firmly placed in there to start reading process, then everything goes smoothly.
@@CyberhugTechnologies I don’t think it’s that. Its weird, when id doesnt work and tries loading it has like a buzzing sound, kind of like a tattoo gun. @@user-qc7hr4my7r Hey, the grind noise means the shaft that moves the lens up and down doesn't get completely and firmly with the motor shaft! so, it might be in contact or not with unstable behavior - classic problem after all the years - the shaft is thin plastic with teeth underneath - needs to be gently bend to make good contact with its teeth again against the motor shaft - for this, lens removal is needed - if you think you can do it ok - i was planning to prep a video since it happens often.

dude i don't know why but after some attempts of calibration my tester is not reading DVD resistance, only CD, did i damaged DVD potentiometer contacts or what? Anyways i think that i can calibrate it without measuring it, just checking the position of the screw... Anyways it isn't that important because i bought some fortuna freemcboot memory cards with mx4sio for my ps2 slim, but damn i need that laser working because of nostalgia, lol.
Ok but I'm curious, WHY does this work? Does the potentiometer just get loose after a while or something?
You're the flash! I read it the other day but you already got it right! I appreciate your time and effort and Thanks for watching!
Hello, the grinding noise is different topic - Try please, to check my other video in the playlist for the grinding noise - Thanks for watching.!
Also, I did some more tests with discs after this:
Audio disc: endless "reading disc"
Video DVD: works
PS2 game: short "reading disc" followed by "disc cannot be read"
DL-PS game: starts fine
Sorry about this monster of a comment, I'm just really clueless about what it happening in my PS2 :( All the solutions I can find online only talk about how their PS2s can't read Dual Layers anymore or no DVDs at all.
It worked! I had to pull it apart and adjust that dvd screw about 25 times, but it finally worked!
Good job Tyler! thank you for watching and for confirming the successful operation 🙂
Worked for me, took a quarter turn
After more fiddling I was able to fix it and it works now! Thank you very much!
@@Zomy_Streams Yeah! Happy to hear that Rose!.. Very welcome
Thanks for the specifics 💯💯💯
Still thinking about doing this put a blue disk in the other day and it seems to be fine for whatever reason but who knows how long that will last =,=
So if the ps2 make strange noises and try to read DVDs games, but with no success, and after trying to clean that, can this method be useful? Thanks
Thanks!
Had only one game that wasn’t reading. All I did was cleaned the lens with a qtip and lens cleaner and it worked
Lucky you! Laser is still good then. Cheers and thanks for watching!
To turn the cd and dvd pieces, do I use a regular phillips head? It doesn't quite look like a normal screw and I don't want to mess anything up
Hi, yes a normal tiny Philips type - it doesn't look like it but it is - kind of strange trimmer screws look like this but yes :-)
will ps2 play games with free mc boot and opl if my disc is not spinning? I just wanted to play in USB instead of DVDs.hope you will reply Thankyou.
Hi there and thanks for watching! Sure it will, it is better to leave it inside tho, even if not working properly so, do not detach it completely, if possible. The other option - if you have the good old fat one, is to attach the network interface on the back and attach a hard disk full of games :-)
@@CyberhugTechnologies That's great Thank you for replying.
I am sure the reply you made might help someone else who does not have a dead laser!

do you skipped a step how do you take it apart
:-D right! It is easy, flip it over, remove all screws you find, flip it back and remove top cover.
PS2 is not complicated like PS3/PS4 which can be a pain.. Thanks!
how do i know how much to turn the potentiometer, and also is there another method of testing, i only own dvds lol
My ps2 slim has the same problem; CDs work fine, DvDs won't be read.
I tried following carefully your directions but still no luck. Any suggestions?
Hi, I guess the laser reached the point that needs replacement - sounds like it - there is a certain point you can't do much and it is ok i guess after so many years in operation- i would suggest another attempt though! Cheers and thank you!
@@CyberhugTechnologies thank you so much for your reply! Have a beautiful day
Is it normal when I turn on gran turismo which is more scratched than need for speed and goes and the need for speed doesn't?
