England were incredible but now it's about backing it up. Standout performers were Martin, Earl, Mitchell and Feyi-Waboso. Really like Furbank as well his intent to attack and his hard work to get into playmaking positions was great. Feyi-Waboso is extremely robust, his defence stood out as much as his attack, he nails people way bigger than him. Martin is just a monster around the park. Can't wait to see this attack blossom with Mitchell at 9 and Smith at 10.

Goodey mate, irish haven't been saying we're the best in the world. Find it funny that this narrative has caught on. Sam Warburton said it and Steve Borthwick said it. So did Big Jim the other week. It's the English Scottish and Welsh contingent that are blowing smoke up our ass. Clearly SA are the best team and showed at the world cup. But this is still a top class irish team and we're not far off top

Agreed its shout out to the Irish fans who were very gracious. Without JGP having to move to the wing, it could have been a different result. If England can back-up with a perfomance and possibly a win against France, then it will be ... and then there were four - South Africa, Ireland, NZ and England ... and really when M. Dupont is finished with 7s, there will be 5, as France will get better from this period having played their 21-year olds who are learning that there's nothing like test rugby. Big Jim and Goodey are the couple this South African didn't know he needed. Bernard Jackman is excellent. This, Aotearoa Rugby, and Ball Carrier are streets ahead of the other panel pods (honourable mention to the slightly inebriated Aussies during the RWC). Love the Boks Office too - but freely admit they boys probably cater to Saffer tastes and sensibilities a bit 😂

  • @stroketheboat
    @stroketheboat 7 месяцев назад +2

It's a bit arrogant hearing Goodey suggest that it was because "he'd been saying for ages" that the England team play with width, that they suddenly did. They were trying it against Scotland 2 weeks ago, but nothing stayed in hand. England left 7 points on the pitch in what were arguably easy kicks. They simply blew Ireland away and I hate to say it, but Ireland thought it would be a case of going through motions, regardless of what they said in public.
Nobody expected England to be that good against that Irish team and after the performance against Scotland - even if it is true that they've always had the potential. What a turnaround.

  • @Gilescowdemdem

If this doesn't include Goodey admitting he was completely wrong last week about SB's plan, "trouble" in the camp, what they were building, the steady focus on defence, kick chase and building the attack off the back of those foundations then I won't be surprised lol. Have so much time for Jim, however, for an ex-professional it's amazing how little depth Andy thinks about the game with.

Historically, even the best teams in the world do not win all the time. That's how rugby works. It's a contact sport with 35 moving parts (add officials)
If 20 of those moving parts align on one side you have a potential winning side. This has always been the way. Lets see how the rest of the championship pans out and may be how the up coming internationals go, then look at the the situation as a whole.

Great points. Another thing about “shapes and sizes” I issue. I do think rugby needs to have a think about player size whether it’s through use of subs, quantity of subs or something else. The game as a whole should be aspirational for athletes at all sizes - the phenomenon of “training for thirty/forty minute games” is (overall) a bit worrying.
I know people will cite Cheslin, or a few others and power is super critical to an entertaining game but rugby ignores diversity of size at its peril.

There have been a number of comments from Irish contributors about rugby being the no.4 sport in our country.
As one of many GAA persons who follows rugby and appreciates this wonderful game, I thought that I should give a little background, that may enlighten those who form opinions, without understanding Ireland’s more recent interest with rugby, and take offence from statements from Irish contributors on various forums.
As a young person growing up in Ireland and playing GAA during the 1960's and early 70' we were forbidden from attending or participating in what were considered British sports. Participants received suspension from GAA games for periods of 3 to 6 months for attending games as a spectator. We were never allowed participate
    The following rule applied
Rule 27 of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), also known as "the Ban", was a rule in force from 1905 to 1971 that banned members of the GAA from playing or watching other sports such as rugby, soccer or hockey.
This ban was lifted in 1971, and before this the rule meant that you never discussed or admitted having an interest in these sports.
For many years after, the traditionalists would not accept the lifting of this ban, and even today 2024, soccer or rugby games are not allowed to be played in any GAA field, without special permission from authority at the highest level.
I expect that this considerablt impacted on the numbers playing the game of rugby, and may be a factor as to why Ireland has won 29 wooden spoons, more than any other nation.
However, all of these came during the 5 nations and since Italy joined, both ourselves and England have avoided this dubious honour.
Perhaps it also explains why we tend to get a little excited about our relative success in recent years.
Hopefully, you find the following facts, enlightening.
The GAA is the largest and most popular organisation in Ireland with some 800,000 members out of the island's population of almost 6 million. Gaelic football and Hurling are the main and most popular activities promoted by the organisation.
The GAA has over 2,200 clubs in all 32 counties of Ireland
Croke Park is one of Europe's largest stadia, with a capacity of 82,300
The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), Ireland’s largest sporting organisation is celebrated as one of the great amateur sporting associations in the world
Football ( Soccer) is the second most popular sport in Ireland and it is also the third most popular spectator sport overall with 16% of total attendances at sports events, behind only Gaelic football (34%) and hurling (23%). (source FAI)
There are currently approximately 95,000 rugby players in total in Ireland and 209 clubs ( GAA 2,200 clubs)
There are 56 clubs affiliated to the Ulster Branch; 71 to the Leinster Branch; 59 to the Munster Branch and 23 to the Connacht Branch.
The Aviva Stadium, (shared between the Football Association of Ireland and the IRFU) is Ireland’s second largest stadium, in the country with a capacity of 51,600. ( Croke Park has 82,300)
Numbers 3 to 10, capacity wise, are all owned by the GAA, and Munster Rugby are 11th with a capacity of 25,600
Numbers 12 to 45 are all GAA stadia, with the exception of Windsor Park (football Belfast No19), RDS ( Leinster Rugby No. 22, capacity 18,500), Ravenhill ( Ulster Rugby 24, 18,196) Tallagh Stadium 28 th ( Football and athletics) Cricket Ireland No34, Morton Stadium 40 (athletics) and Galway Sports Grounds 45 ( Capacity 8149, Connacht Rugby and Greyhound Racing)
Rugby or Football ( soccer), which are not classified as Irish sports, are not allowed to be played in any of the GAA stadia, without special permission from the GAA authorities. This is a very big deal and has been granted in less than 10 occasions, over 140 years for rugby, and much fewer, if ever, for football (soccer)

England clearly outplayed us, we were way off, lots of mistakes and indiscipline, however Ireland really should have closed that game out with 90 seconds left. All the English pundits are now praising England and assuming they are back, they won in the 82nd minute by one point.

Ireland are number 2 in world rankings, SA number 1, the WC has nothing to do with actual rankings except double points for the winners, which as of now SA are still number 1 and thats about right. This is the way Irish fans see it . NZ went through periods of under preforming in the WC but were still seen as number 1 team in the world because of consistency and longevity in their results against the biggest powers in rugby. If SA remain consistent in the future they will hold on to number 1 if they don’t they won’t be number 1 in the rankings. Just because you win a World Cup doesn’t make you the best team in the world until the next World Cup and this applies in every sport.

Borthwick clearly targeted this game. It was a bit fairly obvious that a lot of the bag of tricks that he had been working on were all present. Yes Ford was off on his game and his one he made also drifted to the right. This is where England have done really well in World Cups where by being together as a unit that cohesion helps build a team and then everything clicks. We saw that against the Boks in France and it just absolutely worked again. England and Ireland left nothing on and off the pitch. It was a fantastic game for all. I would have been happy to lose by about 10 but that was a great performance from all 23. Such an Iconic way for England to win with a droppie.

I'm Irish and even I find the moniker of best team in the world to be shameless and nauseating especially when there is a team that has just won two world cups back to back when we haven't even made it past a quarter final. We've come a long way yes, we are winning 6 nations, grands slams, winning games against the southern hemisphere sides even in world cups, but we are a long way from doing what South Africa or New Zealand have accomplished.

      @NTL578 7 месяцев назад +1

@andyg106 The defensive system, yes I will give you that. There was a big jump in standard based on the first few 6n games, but yes, that part was clear what we were trying to do. Talk of it being 14 games to get right was common from most, and it looked like it would take quite a few more games to get right.
In terms of the rest of it, no chance. It was still box kick mania, even 2 games ago. We tried to play more expansively last game, but the standard was a million miles from the game vs Ireland. Even then, that's one game in a long time where the plan seemed to be more than, kick our way up the pitch and try to muscle over.
The one game jump on Saturday was far beyond a game by game improvement. It was monumental. Almost freak. There's not one person who's being completely honest saw that performance coming.
Also by the way we need to go to France and back that performance up. It will take a few more games to say for sure this is our new standard.

If 20 of those moving parts align on one side you have a potential winning side. This has always been the way. Lets see how the rest of the championship pans out and may be how the up coming i ternationals go, then look at the the situation as a whole.

Claiming Borthwick wasn't in favour of Earl whereas Goode always wanted him... And now "that's the blue print, the minimum standard" come on! "That was the best test match in a long time " so how can that be the minimum standard! Playing like that twice in 2 weeks...
