A race no one wanted to win. Jones must have thought that he was going to be lucky if he finished 5th but instead he won. Good solid finish by Mass which I believe was his highest finish in his career. To bad the politics of the day striped the race of its championship status on the Friday of the event. Both Ferrari and Renault went home before the race started.
That Osella which was driven by Eddie Cheever, who retired from 3rd place was some 100 kg heaver than other cars. It was Osella's first car in F1 and they did not managed to make it lighter.
The race on the track wasn't nearly as shambolic as the politics in the paddock. This was the climax of the FISA/FOCA "war". Thankfully peace broke out soon after between FOCA and the fiercely French Jean-Marie Balestre... just in time for the French Grand Prix! His day was spoiled not only when Alan Jones won the French GP in his very-British Williams but afterwards when Alan refused to mount the podium until Balestre got off it!
Reutemann was lucky not to have been killed by Laffite's wheel, I swear. Got his bell rung, for sure - note how his visor pops open upon impact.

Great drivers, great cars, a great circuit... that was F1 in the 80's... I hope some day F1 would be as it was years ago
¡¡Cómo se "robaban" la largada en esos años, impunemente!!
No era ilegal mientran no se pasara la línea del cajón. No era obligario detenerse completamente.
ELIO DE ANGELIS, SHOW! LARGADA ESPETACULAR.

And It was the first F1 car on Pirelli tyres when Pirelli had real good tyres...

Qué tremenda largada del Lole!! Los madrugó a todos!!
Honestly what are we doing here? Racing or Ping Pong?
Another false start from Reutemann.....man....maybe the 100th time in his career...
Coitados dos pilotos desta época. Eram mais testes de resistência das máquinas do que pilotagem.
Pironi... a shame to lose him.
Impresionante largada de Reutemann! Lástima que su carrera fue arruinada por el mediocre de Laffite.
