I'm a piano Newbie, and when I started with a teacher after almost a year of watching YT videos. When he put a sheet of music in front of me, I was lost.
Since then I've practiced at least 15 minutes every day.
But I don't pay attention to rhythm. You're first point really hit home. I hate using the metronome, and I guess I'll change.
    Merci beaucoup.

Tatiana - I've been working on my sight reading and once people have done all that you suggest in this wonderful video, when it gets time to actually play, I've been trying to train myself to look ahead at the notes that are coming up, rather than looking at the notes as I'm playing them. This is especially easy when playing a longer note (half-not, dotted half, whole). You can look ahead at what's coming and mentally prepare for the passage even before playing it. It's hard to break the habit of looking at the note that you're playing, but if you can train yourself to look ahead, it helps eliminate surprises.....! Just a thought....

I just started playing flute 3 weeks ago, at 55 years old ( after french horn, tuba, and others ) , and you give me a lot of courage every day ! We, often, are only limited by ourselves, and at this time, with your help, I'm really sure that I will progress ! Thank you !!!

I’m going to audition for a high school of the arts with a very small acceptance rate and will be required to sight read for my application. This helps a lot

A huge advantage for me is that I've already learned sight-reading from my days as a choir singer, and I also have Hal Leonard's books to study some of the songs that I would like to cover.

Semi-quavers for 1/16 notes. I keep forgetting you are from South Africa and use the English names for note time values. I can understand most of the terms and it's no problem to look them up. Maybe I should create a small note card 'cheat sheet' to help my foggy old brain (it's 73 years old) learn them. I've been playing for a couple of years and my teacher, who is younger than my daughter, often pulls out a song book of tunes, flips to a random page, and says PLAY THIS! I'm getting good at sight reading because of this. I may know the melody in my head but certainly not the actual music and it's probably a different arrangement anyway.

I'm just glad I've never encountered a demisemihemidemisemiquaver or a breve lately. Thanks for the heart.

Don’t stop no matter what! Practice playing through making all kinds of mistakes and learn to improve! Otherwise, make sure to check your key signature and understand the basic rhythms before you start.

Interesting video, but speaking as a jazz musician I don't actually need to tangle with this! I sometimes sight-read a tune from sheet music, but it's simpler to just find a recording of it and pick it up by ear. But what I do need is the chord chart, which you don't mention at all, yourself clearly having a classical orientation.

It's not the fact that im nervous to sight read music it's the fact that I either get the rhythm or the notes wrong EVERY SINGLE TIME and im going to have to try out for all district band and I don;t feel prepared. Edit: oh goodness, this is after watching the video and I feel even less prepared. Something about me is that I play well when im used to the notes im playing and understand what the key signature is telling me and accidentals. Regardless of whether I understand what the difficult notes are, I'll always play it wrong. And the music always travels faster than my eyes so I can never catch up before it;s too late.

Hi Ruth! Oh, I can so so so relate to this. Something really important to consider. When you sight-read you ARE going to get it wrong. 100%. The art of sight-reading is about learning to make mistakes and keep going no matter what. I wish someone explained this to me sooner. It would have taken so much of the fear out of it for me. Rather than trying to get it right, practice getting it wrong and allowing your mind to make a plan in the moment. This is the art of sight-reading. Strangely, the more you realize this, the less mistakes you make and the more you ease into it with a calm mind. But don’t let that be the goal! Hope that can maybe help a little!

I'm a god at sight reading. But if you give me a new piece I have to look it up to find the rhythm. I am TrAsH at finding rhythm.
