Bravo to you! 6 years after you posted this video it's still helping, and today it helped me fix my favorite lamp that has never properly worked and hasn't worked at all in about 2 years! So thank you, I greatly appreciate your help!
Your suggestion to pull up the electrical contact just saved me time, money, and anxiety as one of my favorite lamps just suddenly didn't work. It does now and I thank you for this vid.
Thank you! I replaced an inline switch that I thought was the problem, but, the lamp still didn't work. Then, I watched your video and pulled up the electrical contact and that was it! Unbelievable that it was such a simple solution that I would never have tried.
@@FIXITHomeImprovementChannel I have one other issue that I cannot find an answer to anywhere online. In a guest bedroom, we have four, LED, recessed lights. After 3 years of use, only 2 of the 4 come on. I have turned them on/off for the past several weeks and on a couple of occasions, they all went on! But, after turning the switch off, the next time we turned it on, only 2 of the bulbs light up. I tried new bulbs and your suggestion of bending the electrical contact that worked for my floor lamp, but, two of them still don't go on. Any suggestions? Thank you!
My daughter's $20 nightlight was flickering and then stopped working. It was no longer carried by target but I was able to fix it by just lifting up the metal part that is suppose to hit the bottom of the lightbulb. Thank you so much!

Thank you!! So easy and simple to fix! You just saved me buying new lamps (even though these were only 1 year old) Cats knock it off the table and killed both of them. After watching your video, I realized it was probably so easy for the cats to kill both lamps because there wasn't any knot in the wires. I fixed that too. I did have to purchase the actual socket for the lamp, because the bottom portion where the screws were, was all hard black plastic, and not exposed. So I got replacement sockets and cut n striped the wires to place them on the new socket, put the knot in and replaced. Literately took me 15 mins for both lamps! Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for this video! I have two antique lamps from my great grandmother that I’ve had since I was 7 (I’m almost 20) and they stopped working a few months ago. The replacement lamp I was using broke too today and this video helped me save all 3 lamps!

Thanks, my man! Who knew a simple "Why won't my new lamp turn on?" would yield such a clear, precise, just-for-non-electrician video! I tried the first step you mentioned and lo and behold: we have light! But, get this, I didn't even have to perform the first step. I flipped the lamp over, ready to go in with my flat head, and that is when I discovered someone wedged the silica gel pack in that very spot. Like what? I gently removed that baby so it wouldn't rain gel beads all over the floor, popped the light bulb in, plugged in, flipped the switch, and voilà! No wonder why this beaut was on clearance for the lo! I went from lucky me :( *whomp, whomp, whomp.* to LUCKY ME :) *Yippeee!* in a matter of moments. Thanks again!
Hi, my little tip: I discovered the socket in my lamp has a second smaller metal contact next to the large metal contact. I bent the smaller one up and down and I got the lamp to work. I don't know if the smaller contact was too high or too low, but it's another component you can check if your lamp has that type of socket.
Thanks for posting the video. I should have known to try step one but was quickly defeated when the light wouldn't turn on. It was just the contact not making a good connection.
Thank you, FIX IT. I'll have to take mine apart to see why it's not working, but my plug is non-polarized (the lamp is from the 70s). Should I replace the cord to have a polarized plug?
Hi, yes a polarized plug is your safety against a shock hazard if the bulb is removed. Here is a podcast we did on lamp repair tips. ruclips.net/video/nnsDDfcs5F4/видео.html
A man in San Francisco benefited from this video on 5 October 2022. Also, I love the term "harp." Now, if you can bring peace to Ukraine and abate global warming, all will be just about good on the planet.
thank you, thank YOU! Question, though- in the first 30 seconds you say..."pull out the electrical contact in the center...and then check that to see if that solves your problem.." see if WHAT solves my problem? And this is very much from a thankful stance, your general clarity and altruism flows through the video....i just don't know what you mean by that...
Hi, if you have a good light bulb and it's not working in the socket, sometimes the contact at the bottom of the socket isn't touching the bottom of the bulb, it just needs to be pulled up. Check out more home improvement tips in our e-books www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B2KW1FQ9?notRedirectToSDP=1&.
"All you have to do is squeeze it..." - I tried for ages with lots of swearing doing this, until I eventually found that mine come apart to then pull it up. I thought "Yay!" until I then saw that everything from then on is a solid plastic sealed unit with no way of getting to the wires. Also, my lamp turns on by touching it, so I don't know how this relates to checking the hot side. The neutral side is good but the hot side is dead.
How do I fix the clicker, the spring fell out, not sure which way to put it back in? ty guys! -Charlie! The guy that was smart enough to unplug the lamp before attempting to dissect it with my tools!
Thank you so much for the tips. Can you please help me out with my unusual situation. I have two lamps one of them is an LED lamp and the other is a vintage lamp. They both work they're not broken BUT when I try to screw the vintage lamp in my room it doesn't work (although it works in the kitchen) and the LED lamp works in both my room and the kitchen.
For me, it's not the socket that's the problem, it's the turn knob that broke off. The lamp doesn't even turn on because that piece has broken off and I can't get a replacement part because I can't afford it nor can I find it in stores. It's so annoying. When I get enough money, though, I'll be getting a replacement knob and installing it myself to see if I can fix it. I just need an Amazon gift card or something and I'll be able to fix it. Replacing a turn knob is a little difficult but it should work.
Thank you for a good video! I have what to me is an unusual situation: my table lamp (which sits on a glass-top table) has recently begun to flicker and to turn off and on whenever anything touches the glass of the table. (This happens only when the lamp is switched "on.") I can literally turn off the lamp by touching the table -- and turn in back on the same way. But, if I touch the lamp (it is not a touch lamp) with my hand, nothing happens unless I turn the on/off switch. The lamp is about 15 years old. Any ideas?
Hi, It could be a loose wire or bad switch. I would take the socket apart first and see how the wires are connected to the screws. Make sure the cardboard insulator is covering the wires. For safety, you can get a kit with a new cord and socket.
Thanks! Strangely, by simply lifting the lamp and then setting it back down, the odd off/on activity stopped. I'm thinking it might have been caused by static electricity and, when I lifted the lamp, I discharged it. Just a guess. I'm going to see what happens over the next day or two; if it stays "normal" I'll take the socket out, as you suggested, and examine everything. It might be that it just needs new "workings" as you also suggest. If it wasn't static electricity that caused the problem, I'm thinking something is loose. Either way, it probably needs its "insides" replaced. Thanks again -- and for responding so fast! I wasn't expecting it! You have several great videos on your main site. This was helpful but what if after checking the continuity the narrow and brass side doesn’t beep? (The wide and silver side did go off)
Hi, the wire from the narrow plug should go to the brass and the wire from the wide plug should go to the silver screw. Just reverse them for safety.
If you aren't getting a current though the wire you need to replace the wire. It could have gotten kinked and broken inside the casing.
