My friend Jared and his son had to get back down to the valley to work and school, but I went out every weekend trying to find him until I finally did. Thanks for watching.
Watching the time lapse at 18:00 with the sound down. Freaked me out wondering what was pouring down the hillside! It does really stink losing the meat, but you did more than most to keep looking for him and finally find him.
I appreciate your effort in locating the downed bull. Others might have given up. Your effort will go a long way in teaching your son of the trials and character needed to be a good and ethical hunter
Awesome............ Getting your son out hunting Elk Buttttttttttttt LOL Whoever was calling the Elk looking at you guys @ 40 yards................ Layne THAT'S NOT WHAT YOU WANT TO DO! Great video !!!
Good to see an honest hunting video. Some exciting elk footage. Sorry you couldn't find the bull but that sort of thing happens in bowhunting. Of course, the RUclips hunting experts that always do it perfectly can judge you but in real life these things happen.
Glad you found him! Let me know if you find mine..... I’m still looking. I had a lot more blood right off the bat, then when he started running with his herd I couldnt make out where he went.
A lot of my buddies use small diameter slick tricks (maybe 3/4" cutting size).. I use Wasp JackHammers expandable that cut 2.5" I think... To me a big hole bleeds better...
I would agree. We typically use a bigger fixed blade broadhead. I killed my bull last year with a smaller one like your friends are using. I think we will be switching to some expandables this year. I bought a few to try out. Consistent arrow flight is one of my main priorities.
I would agree. He’s lucky he didn’t poke his dad’s eye out with his broad head. Just a little careless. Definitely a teaching moment we missed in the field.
Couldn’t tell where he was hit. He was further down the canyon to the west, another 300 yards or more. He must have gone back down the draw and headed west.
If the animal runs uphill, he pumps himself dry. The lack of blood trail could indicate a hi hit, meaning the body cavity would have to fill up with blood before leaking out the holes. Mortally wounded critters will run downhill towards water- textbook for this bull; you never did tell/show us the point of impact so everything is pretty much conjecture. Looks like a nice bull; unfortunately things happen to cause this kind of ending to such majestic animals. Lessons learned(?) & better luck next time
Dang it man! Sounds like a high hit with only one lung struck. They are tough animals. If you hunt long enough it will most likely happen to ya. Happened to me more than once unfortunately. Good job staying after it, at least you found him, sucks there won’t be any backstraps on the grill but scavengers will make sure it’s not wasted totally. Good luck brother👍🇺🇸
why didn't you use a racking challenge to the satellite bull if he was aggressive, also you could use a cow decoy too and i think it would help to draw that bull closer being that open, but layene was a trooper and he'll grow up to be a great bow hunter just from seeing his poise and control..great job young man, but than me when i was his age lol. i shot at my 1st bull elk in utah and it was only a barely legal bull and i was so stoked and couldn't even pull my bow...it's unfortunate that happen, but it's hunting and things like that will happen sooner or later...the good thing is, it's a learning process and be a better hunter.
Or some face paint next time. He lives in Gilbert, you would think he would have a tan living down in the valley for the past few years. Maybe he never sees the sun.
Yeah, not sure. I was filming my friend's hunt and I'm in full camo while filming and he's the one hunting and wasn't sometimes. It was a 2 week long hunt and I only filmed them for about 5 full days out of 14, so I only caught a few of his clothing options on cam. Elk generally don't have the best eyesight as long as you don't move. They just have a great sense of smell.
Experience has William. Elk/Deer aren’t color blind but they only see in blue, green and yellowish tones. We’ve called in countless elk up close without camo. As long as your outline isn’t in the wide open and you aren’t moving, usually they can’t see you. They see movement well, as do most animals, trying to get a 12 year old to hold still long enough is the ticket though. They don’t see orange and red tones well. Why do you think they selected Hunter Orange as a safety color? Why do you think Santa wears red? Those reindeer literally have no clue there is a fat man in the back of that sleigh they haul around. That fat jolly old man is an experienced hunter, I can tell.
@Rogue Outdoorsmen, CB is correct, so are you in your point, that a face mask or paint helps, no doubt. IMO, it's THE most important piece of camo a guy will have or wear. I have a lifetime of animals taken though I gave up archery hunting when much younger after too many non-recovered animals. Your bull was unrecovered, wasted, suffered . "Too many" is up to each to interpret but must be considered. Other than the waste of animal, outstanding job of documenting this hunt, really good!
impressed at your dedication for find him! Excellent example for your boy!..Good job!

Nice job looking for that bull... most people would say screw it but you stuck with it and I applaud you for that...
Buck fever can make a pro become a beginner all over again. Good job showing the Truth of the good and the bad.

The dad and the son were the ones with the tags, but yes, it is an important teaching opportunity.
Now this is what an Elk hunt is all about (in my imagination anyway, still building the foundation for my own adventure). Great work here!!
Real nice teal sweatshirt, good move genius.
I bet you worked your butt off trying to find him good video man looking forward to the next!
Yeah, just sucks we couldn’t find him earlier. I’ve seen a lot of that this year. I’m excited for our mule deer hunts.
@@RogueOutdoorsmen I'm looking forward to the footage👍

Yep, it sucks. Just trying to show what happens sometimes.
Glad you found him! Let me know if you find mine..... I’m still looking. I had a lot more blood right off the bat, then when he started running with his herd I couldnt make out where he went.
Looks like you guys searched hard for him and stinks you didn't find him sooner than you did, but glad to see you still tagged him.
Yeah, it sucks. One of the worst things is losing an animal. Just glad we were able to recover him and finish the story.

I already sub!!!! Nocked_out on IG
Some scary goings on between 10:45 and 11:10.

Aim for the elk, not the trees
That's not the bull from the video you found a bigger dead bull but good find
Yep, we surmised the same thing.
Like the shed videos you guys kill it 👍👌
Thanks Chuck. We are trying to get better at filming.

Nice video and story. Did you figure out where he was hit at and how far he went from that ridge you lost his trail.
Couldn’t tell where he was hit. He was further down the canyon to the west, another 300 yards or more. He must have gone back down the draw and headed west.
were you close to him while searching your first day.
He was a couple hundred yards to the west. So not really.
where can i get bows like that?

What poundage is the young man's bow?
His dad bought him a bow that was adjustable from 25-70 pounds. He had worked up to a 40 pound draw before this hunt.

But father, I do not wish to go bow hunting. Allow me to continue my endeavors with my PlayStation.
What unit is this?
27
I will avoid unit 27 now lol
That boy needs a hat can see his face from New Mexico 👋🏼

Camo your faces and get rid of those sunglasses. Its an elk hunt not a fashion show.
How about some camouflage and maybe a face mask. Just saying...good footage tho...

@@RogueOutdoorsmen The heck they don't have good eye sight, Who told you that. Do you think blonde hair and a white face won't show up out there?

Yeah, it’s a tough draw. I know of rifle shots that were well placed and the animals never died. A lot comes down to luck.
Not too sure about walking through all that thick stuff in the burn area with a knocked arrow. Safety should be paramount.
Yeah, we missed a teaching moment while we were caught up in the action.
