    Fun flips! Love the print in the Golden frame. If people understood how many books are thrown away at thrift stores, because people isn't buying them.. I work at a thrift stores and we recycle 90 % of the books, because they will not sell. Goodwill bins is the last stop, so if you rescue a book there and use it for the prints, that's great!!

    • @DesertDIY

      Thank you Emma! I agree. wow 90% is crazy!

      At my Goodwill, hardbound books are $4. Always. No sales. So I don't buy them there.

      Our stores think they’re high end retail , so I never buy , $4 & $5 is no bargain when it’s donated goods .

    Cory, you do you and ignore the naysayers!! People act like books are sacred. The only sacred book is the Holy Bible. I'm an avid reader and I save my favorite authors/books, but I don't consider them sacred. Would the naysayers rather that book be thrown in the trash or saved from the trash and used in a beautiful way?!?!

    • @DesertDIY
      @DesertDIY  7 месяцев назад +4

      Isn't that funny! I think people can be way too attached to "things" sometimes. You can't take it with you in the end so enjoy things however you want to while you're here

    ❤ We live in a throw away society…and with countless people into seasonal decorating…and with people seemingly quickly get tired of their decor and change things out often…and we definitely are in a thrifting and reselling trend… With that said, the value of many things aren’t respected for what they are… it’s hard for me to see what is damaged or destroyed just for temporary decor in your home or for resale! It really isn’t ok to use special books, as Bibles, hymn books, old music sheets and books, crocheted pieces, possibly that was made by Grama, or your mom, painting or pulling apart old pianos, etc. ….the list goes on and on! Many of these “crafts” are just for a time, and they are trashed anyway and eventually land at the dump! Decor always seems to change SO often… that’s how society is today in their mentality! So why deface, dismantle, rip apart things that do
    have value, just to make something for fun or to resell! I cherish, treasure, deeply appreciate, place value on things that remind me of someone I love, or remind me of different times in my life that had meaning to it…. Once things are destroyed for whatever reason, it’s gone…there is no replacing them! So please make your choices really careful on what you will do with what you find! Most books are incredible, in appearance and content!
    But a lot of books are worth nothing right from their beginning… with all the techy stuff today, books have had to take 2nd place…and that is a tragedy! But most books have great value…and should be enjoyed and appreciated for what they are…..❤ Including all other current, vintage or antiques items that have much character and to be treasured…
    There are those of you that will read this comment and be ticked off with me…It doesn’t matter in the least because this is what I deeply think and feel… I get concerned by what I am seeing on many U-tube sites these days…….😢

    The green topiary ball is nice. It would also look cute with some sort of limb broken off and pressed into foam that you push into.th3 bottom of the vase. The hot glue the little green topiary so it looks like a little tree in the pot. The separation the little branch creates between the pot and the topiary ball will give it a more balanced weight appearance.

    • @DesertDIY
      @DesertDIY  7 месяцев назад

      Even if they are never going to be seen again? It is very interesting that some viewers are bothered by a sticker that they would never know was there unless they actually broke something apart to look for it. I use permanent adhesives. My brain doesn't understand it. It would be like expecting someone to stain or paint every side of lumber before building something... some parts will never be seen again and don't warrant the extra work. Are you thinking someone will see those stickers somehow? 🤔

  • @debrahurst1319

    I think you are so sweet, and I’m not sure why but todays video made me chuckle. Watching you try to attach the wood round to the brass Hosley candle holder had me giggling ( Hosley is vintage brass from India I have one of their brass boxes). I know it wasn’t easy but it was the right call it looked great! I think the green looked better than the white in the rich persons pot 😂. That brown bunny sure made the rounds in this video…I felt so bad for him when the white bunny took his place in the last vignette, lol. I love older books, and I usually hate to see them taken apart, but in this instance I totally get where you are coming from🥰.

    For items that are actually food safe like your "decorative" casserole dish, I definitely wouldn't put anything that is not food safe on it/them in case someone wants to use it for food. Whoever buys your casserole dish doesn't know you put stain on it and might use it for food.

Your book of plants was thrown away by somebody and you have saved it so to use it and share it with others page by page, I think is wonderful. I enjoy this format very much though. I am glad you are using the actual book pages and not copying them, that would infringe on the copyright laws. Also for future reference those little pins on the brass candle holders for pillar candles unscrew so they can be used for multiple things. Even the vintage ones!

    • @DesertDIY
      @DesertDIY  7 месяцев назад +3

      I tried to unscrew it but it wasn't budging. maybe with pliers. You make a VERY good point about copying the pages! I didn't even think about that but you are correct!

    Really beautiful. The juxtaposition of the rustic rooster and the glam dish at the beginning was super beautiful. I also love the brass mixed with the wood! You stage things so nicely. ❤ Also, you're making an excellent use of the book!

    Hello, It's great that you can reuse items and give us ideas on what to do with our thrifted items. As far as the book of prints, most people don't realize about 320 million books are thrown away each year rather than recycled or reused, and paper accounts for 25% of waste in the landfill. (from google) Not only that but unless that book was printed before 1928 it is under copyright. It is against the law to copy book pages and use them in a way to make a profit. When you buy the book you can use the pages because you own the book, but you cannot copy them. I also agree that the original book pages will look much better than copies. 😊

    The only reason people say not to tear pages is because they WANT to find fault with ANYTHING. They don’t actually care or even actually believe it’s somehow “wrong”. It’s not a rare antique book. What you’re doing is a sustainable practice and people need to close their mouths.

    I've seen others clip off those points on candle stands. Also please remove tags before staining.

      It was thick metal so I'm thinking I'd have had to use my electric dremel to cut it off. I have a very busy life so I save those extra minutes I wouldve spent fighting a sticker that will never be seen, on being with my babies. I use permanent glue on these items so if someone took it apart, the sticker would be the least of their worries lol.

      *I disagree, Cory. The time you spent gluing, re-gluing and finally getting help from your husband to drill in screws - plus the time you spent painting gold over the screws - is MUCH MORE TIME than you would have spent using a Scotty Peeler (from Amazon in the Set with 3 plastic and 1 metal peeler) to remove the tag, which takes 2 seconds, and then grinding off the spike with an angle grinder or a dremel. 😊 I'm NOT trying to bust your chops, sweet friend and Sister-in-Christ. I'm just making a recommendation based on personal experience that will be a helpful time-saver for you, as well as increase the perceived value of your makeovers. Remember, people watching your RUclips videos notice your attention to details. I mean these suggestions in the kindest way possible, Cory❣️😉💜*
      *I have noticed more than 1 person commented about you not removing tags. Think about the possibility of how many more people had the same thought, but said nothing? Food for thought, my dear friend.💜💙💚💕*

    It does look like the 100 acres woods! 😊 what a wonderful way to honour the printing of an old book - by showcasing each beautiful print in a frame. Loved the green topiary best the other one just looked too busy and lost against the backdrop.

    Love the flips especially the book and frame. If you mod poge or use white glue slightly watered down it gives the pages a oil painting effect. 😊

      *Sometimes you just need to make people stop and think in order to realize they are getting the "look" they desire AND saving money in the long run. 😊🌷🌷🌷*
