I expect this mower will last several seasons with decent care. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend Also, I ran across the problem with it not starting the 2nd time I used it. There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.
Noise canceling wireless headphones are so much are much more comfortable and fun than standard hearing protection. Best way of enjoying the mow my bro.

You’re going to love it! Take your time and enjoy. You’ll wonder why you waited so long to get a zero turn. You’re totally right - I find mowing therapeutic too. And I could never make it in the Florida heat.

I was gifted a big Great Dane commercial mower, had to do some work on it but I've got it working well . a learning curve after using a old Snapper rider. You are right on first time driving a zero turn , just take your time, learn the controls and stay off hills! I can cut what took 3.5 hours on the old Snapper down to 1 hour and 15 minutes and I'm a newbe!
Great video, I just got my JD zero turn. My best advice to any new rider is to remember to keep repeating, Pull back to stop! Repeating it keeps it top of m8 d just like I tell new motorcycle riders when learning counter straying, is “push right to go right and push left to go left.
You are over thinking the steering... Hold you hands out in front of like you are riding an imaginary bike. Now turn right, then left. Notice the position of the hands on each turn. It will be the same when you drive the zero turn. Also to help you drive straight don't look down directly in front of you, focus of something at the end of your run and drive (aim) towards it.
Thanks, Todd. That is excellent advice. After using the Toro TIMECUTTER only a few times, I really understood the steering of the mower. Great example about the handlebar of a bicycle. I have seen people also describe it as pushing a shopping cart. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@ Todd H: the example with the handlebars of a bicycle (or motorcycle for that matter) only applies at low speed; at higher speeds they are actually manipulated the exact opposite way. To turn right, right handlebar needs to be pushed forward. To turn left, left handlebar needs to be pushed forward 🙂
@@iangolightly604 We are saying the same thing but in a different way. Speed has no bearing on how the mower is maneuvered left and right. It does factor in how much the turf gets torn up when making sharp turns.

It looks easy but from you just explained, it's very involved process. If think I'll just stick to my regular riding mower. Even if if it takes longer to cut the yard. Thanks for the info.
Once you get some seat time - it's not hard at all. Now that I've had it for over a year, I'm very confident and I can mow my yard in about 1/2 the time it previously took me on the riding mower (a Gravely rider). Thanks for watching and commenting.
It's easy. I'm a 71 year old female that never drove a zero turn. I hopped right on and took off on it like nothing. It was the same when I was determined to learn to drive a stick shift many years ago.
I just took ownership of the 50". I allowed my parent's lawn to grow to a mini jungle so that I could practice on their lawn, which is more wide open then mine. I had to cut in several directions to fully chop up the grass so this gave me more than enough time. Soon I was in the Rabbit mode. It took very little time to get used to driving. I was nervous driving onto and off the trailer. I put it in Turtle mode and revved down the engine and drove slowly and that worked. I practice at the Toro dealership before heading to my parent's. Now, I need to learn how to do 3 point turns with the trailer. I will go to an empty parking lot and practice. Fortunately, it's a small and light 5x8 trailer that I can roll around myself.
That's awesome You're right that it doesn't take long to get used to using the zero turn mower. Especially when the TIMECUTTER has the speed control selection (rabbit, middle, turtle). I think it's a great system for learning and for maneuvering around obstacles. Our 60" Toro barely fits into the enclosed 6x12 trailer. Good to hear that the 50" does fit in a 5x8. Thanks for watching and commenting. We look forward to hearing about your future mowing experience on the Toro!
Try putting gator blades on the mower that will help chop it up better. Those factory high lifts that come on them are ok if you are barely taking anything off. The gators work greatvfor chopping up leaves. Your yard could be completely covered and run over it twice and all gone.
@@Methodical2 they all are pretty much the same thing. I got mine from Amazon. Much cheaper than the dealer was. Just make sure they are for your exact mower. Buy ones made in the usa. Those cheap Chinese ones aren't as thick as American ones.
I have a Bad Boy 42" Rambler with a 22hp Kohler. You better wear hearing protection when operating this particular model as it's very loud. I don't have earmuffs, I use the EAR foam ear plugs. They work very well and makes mowing enjoyable. I bought my ZTR in mid Sept 2022 (it's Dec 29 now). Due to a long period of little rain I've only put around 3 hrs on the unit and still haven't mastered controlling it as much as I would like.
Thanks for the comment! I've been curious to hear from someone with one of the Bad Boy mowers. I know they're pretty popular around here since they're sold at Tractor Supply. Good idea to use the foam ear plugs. Have you tried the noise cancelling over-ear headphones? You'll be surprised how quickly you pick up operation of the zero turn. If you're at 3 hours, I'd bet by the time you're at 8-10, it'll feel much more natural. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Work at Lowe's, had a Timecutter max my ride returned but it was inspected and everything checked out so i bought it for $2300. Never driven a zero turn so im trying to watch videos, i understand the steering on it. It's basically like aome of the rc cars i had as a kid with 2 joysticks, i just want to know the other basics like setting decl height and the other extra buttons and knobs. Im sure it's easy once you do it. This will mostly replace my Husqvarna 2246 riding mower.
Thanks for the tip how not to scuff the yard during sharp turns. I need that one. The tip that helped learn precision control was to drive the machine at a crawl and focusing on maneuvering the left side of the mower deck precisely where I wanted to to cut. The turtle speed is meaningless because the handle movement completely controls the speed. You can easily move at a snail's regardless of where you set the speed control lever. It has become an effortless pleasure to mow my fencelines and around my landscape edging. Now it is like I drive my Timecutter with mind control. Timecutters make mowing fun again.
I found a skid steer loader pretty intimating when I was operating it which steered the same way. I guess if I can operate a skid steer loading moving a pile of dirt I can operate one of these.
If you're experienced on a skid steer - I'd say this would be pretty simple to pick up. I had no skid steer experience. Now that I'm more comfortable on the zero turn, I wonder if I be comfortable trying a skid steer?
@@PurpleCollarLife I don't see why not. The only extra things is the bucket and the way the skid steer loader starts. I also entered the skid steer loader from the front as well.
Great tips Chad, mowing with my new Kubota zero turn has been quite the learning curve especially at the new house with such a steep front lawn, many of the things you mentioned I have figured out for myself but it’s nice to hear a little validation with the issues I’ve been having!
Just upgraded from tractor to a Hustler Raptor XD 60in overkill is an understatement. Wanted the 54 inch would have been better on a 48. I have a lot of obstacles and animals to work around and dodge. Had a 60 inch before but it was garbage even brand new. Tractor supply doesn't have a service department. My recommendation is only buy from a dealer who has a good reputation for service.
Hi David - I absolutely agree that it's best to purchase from a dealer with a good reputation for their service department (and parts department). Thanks for watching and commenting!
Once you learn how to use a zeroturn mower. It's very soothing in its own way and you can sorta block out all trouble and it's sort of soothing in its own way
That's true. I like to listen to other videos on my headphones while mowing now. I talk about that in this video: ruclips.net/video/TdCuO25Hcwg/видео.html
I almost bought a zero turn but I checked with dealer first and he was against it was because my house has a somewhat steep front and side the back is flat with a few trees and suggested I stay with my Honda HRX 217 self propelled walk behind mower that he sold me 7 years ago
Sounds like your dealer is a good person! I like it when they make recommendations based on your needs and not just making a sale. Definitely using a zero turn on a steep slope is NOT recommended. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thank you for the tips. Already liking the channel. Toro is definitely the brand I was looking to go with too. Our house as you might know is being built right now on 9 acres. Our channel is way newer than yours but I already noticed you had a deal with Toro. Perhaps I could talk to you offline about that? Enjoying your content so far!
Hi Home With The Buffingtons - I wouldn't go with any other brand - honestly. I've done lots of research and picked Toro to partner with. Happy to talk anytime. You can email me at purplecollarlife@gmail.com
I had never heard of it. I looked it up after you ask the question. Interesting concept - but I think I'd prefer to use the steering the way it was designed.
Just think of it as having a steering wheel in the middle of the handles, if you pull left youre turning the steering wheel left, if you pull right youre turning the steering wheel right. If you push left, youre turning the steering wheel right, if you push right youre turning the wheel left. Pretty simple if you can imagine that, took half acre for me to learn.
Good advice! Hills are challenging on a ZT. My advice is to go up and down the hills but you need a good turnaround location at the bottom. ZTs do not turn around well when facing downhill (at least mine doesn't). I find that I have to slow down to a gradual stop then go backwards while turning to go back up. It's really easy to turn at the top of the hill. You just don't get much traction with the forward weight shift going downhill. I was brand new to ZT mowers when I purchased one for our new rural property. It does take practice starting out. Our land has some fairly extreme slopes with over 150ft of elevation changes over 10 acres. I mow about 3 acres of it with the ZT. I got one with a ROPS because of the hills. The mower took a lot of abuse the first year because I was mowing pasture area that hadn't been touched in 15+ years. I had someone come in with a forestry cutter to clear areas, and then I did cleanup and started mowing. Last summer I wiped out a new set of blades on an old metal fence post I didn't see (ugh). Fortunately, the hubs nor deck were damaged.
Thanks for watching and commenting! I have gotten better with practice. But I’ve still had some white-knuckle times where I”ve been sliding down a hill toward a pretty deep ditch. It can get scary!
This is a great tip! I had always thought of that when using my other mowers, but on the Timecutter, since it says to turn it off at full throttle, I pretty much just always have it at full throttle. But you're right that it would be much easier on the PTO to engage at a lower RPM. Thanks for watching and reminding me!
One thing is for sure, first time trying to drive one of these things is like the first time ever trying to hit a golf ball. Those that already know how, make you look like a fool! Looks to me you kinda of have to think backwards, a bit like backing up a trailer, which can also make you look like a fool the first time you do it.
HA - excellent examples! Don't worry about what anyone else thinks. It took me a long time to learn that - there was a time I didn't want to embarrass myself in front of others, so I wouldn't try anything new that might cause that situation. Now I'm making 1-2 videos a week and sometimes embarrassing myself. :) Thanks for watching.
After you get used to it and know what you're doing .you can mow full speed and only need to use one hand to do so. You can go forward, reverse and turn using only one hand. As farcas the ear protection, to late for me. Using mowers and weedeaters for many years without protection i am pretty much deaf. Hope you enjoy your mower.
Thanks, Kevin. We do really like the zero turn. I'm not a one-hand operator yet, but I certainly am better than operating the mower than I was in this video when I was just beginning to learn.
You can do most of your driving with one hand you just sort of squeeze one side of your hand or the other. Can't exactly do a U-turn or a flip that way but you can do most of your work

My problem is that I was a pilot for many years, where , when you step on the right rudder the plane goes right. This zero turn is just the opposite. I guess it will work itself out. My dealer told me to think of the mower as a grocery cart. When you turn right you push the left side of the cart or pull back on the right side. I only have an hour on my mower, but I still instinctively get it reversed.
I got a Toro zero turn the case crack on the side of the motor its leaking oil but it still runs good how can I fix the crack so it will quit leaking can u put some kind of liquid Steel on it r do you have to have it wield?
Hi Artuhur - I'm not sure about that. I can't picture where you're saying that it is leaking. I'd recommend taking it to a small engine mechanic, or your local dealership that services Toro equipment and have them take a look.
When you backed off your trailer was the out put pulled up or sticking out flat ? I have a six by eight too and with my husqvarna ytd22v46 fits on it well as it is 70 inches long. I find the huge zero turns won't fit on my trailer. Which one is best? You can't leave it out in the rain? I live in the rain capital of the usa.
Hi Anjanya - Thanks for check out our video. I had the chute pulled up and held by rubber bands. It won't fit in the trailer with the chute down and just barely fits with it up. I have never left mine out in the rain, but I have seen other people leave theirs out. It's probably best and will last longer if you can cover it with something. They probably make covers for them, but a tarp would also work. Thanks again! Subscribe to see more videos!
Good question - yes, there are 4 adjustment points underneath the seat that tilts up - 2 hand knobs, and 2 bolts. I show them in this video at about the 22 minute mark. ruclips.net/video/0OThTRmYUz0/видео.htmlsi=jLx6L9wONvQrSJwf
Many Pros in the biz find "three-point" turnarounds the safest bet for not scuffing the turf. Since you are very inexperienced, may want to incorporate technique in your skill set.
I am only getting used to driving a zero turn but the number 1 rule is never to mow at turtle speed you should always have it on rabbit mode when cutting it.
Actually - it's okay to mow in turtle mode. In fact it's the perfect speed mode for mowing around obstacles (trees, cemetery stones, etc.). And it's a great speed setting for learning to use the mower at first. But now, I rarely mow in turtle mode.
@@PurpleCollarLife then you slow down with the arms. At my work we perfectly go around garden beds etc and as for graves same thing and that's with about 2 inches to spare most times and in 16 years 0 complaints from the council who owns the cemetery. But just try with a new learner is to adjust with the arms
@@PurpleCollarLife I just got a zero-turn last weekend. Have spent only a little time on it - so I'm still learning. Thanks for making this video - very helpful!
Pretty much every mower I’ve owned calls for full-throttle when towing. This Toro actually calls for full throttle also when you’re turning it off. I’m not sure why that is.
Everyone wants to make a professional video and always forgets the beginning. Dude how do you start the thing😂 all that about steering a non running mower geez
To clarify, you aren't engaging the PTO (blades) while running in low (turtle you said) are you? All zero turns, when mowing and blades on, should be at full throttle (rabbit) You can drive it without blades on in lowest speed, but when cutting and blades engaged, always have it set to highest rabbit position.
Hello @2010stoof -When I refer to the Turtle speed, I'm talking about the Toro Smart Speed technology, which controls the drive speed separate from the engine speed. The engine speed is pretty much always at full-throttle - since that's where Toro recommends you run it and shut it off. Good question though - glad to clarify that I was referring to the drive speed control, not the engine speed.
Greetings. Question? Has anyone out there ever experienced a Toro SS5000 run over a person, while He/She was off the seat and standing around it. Will a Toro engage on its own to move forward or backwards. Heard some horrified stories this machine can and will do. Anyone.
Thanks for watching! We've been really happy with our Toro zero turn (TIMECUTTER with 60" fabricated deck). My only complaint is that I keep getting flat tires on the front dolly wheels. That's not any fault of Toro or the mower though - it's all the thorn trees we have on the property.

Thanks. I just took mine out to check. It says that the turtle mode (referred to as Trim mode in the manual) is the proper mode for training. You’re right that once you’re a confident driver, you should use the faster speed to mow “normally”. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Congrats on the new machine! It sounds like you got a great deal!!
Very helpful
Thank you! We appreciate you watching and commenting.
Thanks for watching and leaving the comment. Once you've got the hang of navigating around the landscaping - you're all set!
Thanks for this.
My pleasure!
Thanks! That steep front lawn of yours would be too scary for me!

@@PurpleCollarLife Hola
Thanks for the advice. Of course, my neighbor had to walk over and tell me how I'm doing it all wrong. Mind your business. I've got this.
Thanks for watching and commenting! That's too funny.
I do see often times people with hearing pro on, is it that much louder than a riding mower? O usually don't wear ear pro for it.
Since the engine is right behind your head, I think protecting your hearing on a zero turn is a good idea. It is recommended in the manual.
Only a certain few manufacturers utilize the parking brake when the steer handles are out. Many brands have a separate parking brake.
Thanks, Travis. Is the separate parking brake an electronic switch in the controls area (near the blade engage and choke)?
Thanks!!
No problem!
Thanks
Thanks for watching! Glad the video was helpful.
Have you tried the V's one hand controller? If so, does it work?
I had never heard of it. I looked it up after you ask the question. Interesting concept - but I think I'd prefer to use the steering the way it was designed.
Just think of it as having a steering wheel in the middle of the handles, if you pull left youre turning the steering wheel left, if you pull right youre turning the steering wheel right. If you push left, youre turning the steering wheel right, if you push right youre turning the wheel left. Pretty simple if you can imagine that, took half acre for me to learn.
Good tip!
It can get scary!
adjust to 3/4 speed before engaging PTO because FAST is a lot of force on PTO PUMP and will wear it out faster, increase speed after engaging.
I own 2 O's
Wet the foam in the ear muffs for better noise reduction
Interesting! I've never tried that.
@@PurpleCollarLife Slowly pour warm water on them until they're well saturated. Probably doubles noise attenuation

You can do most of your driving with one hand you just sort of squeeze one side of your hand or the other. Can't exactly do a U-turn or a flip that way but you can do most of your work
I'm getting better at driving with one hand. Thanks for watching.

No problem! Glad to hear it was helpful. Did you just get a zero turn? If so - they're awesome machines. Let us know what you have. Thanks!
@@PurpleCollarLife Just Purchased the Ariens IKON XD 42, researched over a month it was delivered today, lot bigger than what I thought it would be, anyway our mowing season here in Upstate NY has ended but im looking forward to my first cut this spring. Happy Mowing, and I hope you have a great day! PS thanks for the tips and tricks on how to get acclimated to using my new ZT :)
Thank you. If you happen to hear anything please advise. Blessings
Will do.
Oh, I'm still getting used to stopping. No brake pedal 😁
Thanks for watching! I was never a pilot - but my instincts were the same.
That too. :)
I operated a Zero Turn Mower for the first time this past Saturday, the levers are very sensitive.
You'll get used to them pretty quickly. Thanks for watching!
Can the seat be adjusted?
Good question - yes, there are 4 adjustment points underneath the seat that tilts up - 2 hand knobs, and 2 bolts. I show them in this video at about the 22 minute mark. ruclips.net/video/0OThTRmYUz0/видео.htmlsi=jLx6L9wONvQrSJwf
I drove a bob cat and wonder if it's the same concepts?
If it has the same control system, I'd think it is. But I've never tried a bob cat. Thanks for watching!
MY TIMECUTTER MAX I JUST HAS 8IN TIRES ON REAR, DID I GET RIPPED OFF?
Our new Timecutter MAX also has 8" tires on the rear. That must be the new size on these machines. ruclips.net/video/XQZEKPEI2tQ/видео.html
3:18 I'd have honestly thought pulling back, too.
It was an opposite reaction that I needed to learn. But once you get some experience, it's pretty easy.
Many Pros in the biz find "three-point" turnarounds the safest bet for not scuffing the turf. Since you are very inexperienced, may want to incorporate technique in your skill set.
Thanks!
6:08 and lastly I do an encore with Depeche Mode.
Good one! :)
@@PurpleCollarLife I just got a zero-turn last weekend. Have spent only a little time on it - so I'm still learning. Thanks for making this video - very helpful!

Meee tooo!😂
My husqvarna calls for full throttle when mowing just wondering
Pretty much every mower I’ve owned calls for full-throttle when towing. This Toro actually calls for full throttle also when you’re turning it off. I’m not sure why that is.
Does it have an adjustable seat????
It does - good question. There are some adjustments under the seat to slide forward and backward. I mostly have it slid nearly all the way back.
@@PurpleCollarLife thank you so much. We got one coming tomorrow and we forgot to ask.

Everyone wants to make a professional video and always forgets the beginning. Dude how do you start the thing😂 all that about steering a non running mower geez
I guess I should have included "how to start". :) Maybe that's a future video opportunity if you think there are people out there who need it.
I've tried watching the boss run the zero turn mower but I'm usually preoccupied with trimming.
I couldn't even start one...
I'm sure with a quick review of the instruction manual, you'd understand the starting process. Thanks for watching!
You got that for free??!! How did you get an offer to review their mowers?
Hi James, Thanks for watching and commenting. Sometimes RUclips channels have an opportunity to review products.
To clarify, you aren't engaging the PTO (blades) while running in low (turtle you said) are you?
All zero turns, when mowing and blades on, should be at full throttle (rabbit)
You can drive it without blades on in lowest speed, but when cutting and blades engaged, always have it set to highest rabbit position.
Spartan recommends engaging the blades at less than full throttle and increasing once blades are spinning. Think is to ease wear.
@@travismuse3586 Same with my Gravely. Anything less than full throttle and you get terrible vibration with the blades engaged.
Do you live at an airport? Sounds like jets taking off.
That's how windy it was that day. There was a storm blowing in - it came faster than I expected. Thanks for watching.
Turtle power mode is just the choke. You start the motor in choke. You don't run it full time choked.
I think you might have misunderstood - the Toro TIMECUTTER has 3 speed selections. Turtle, Towing, and Rabbit.
Greetings. Question? Has anyone out there ever experienced a Toro SS5000 run over a person, while He/She was off the seat and standing around it. Will a Toro engage on its own to move forward or backwards. Heard some horrified stories this machine can and will do. Anyone.
I've never personally heard about anything like that.
The toro is a decent zero turn for the homeowner.
Turtle power
I knew someone would catch the reference! Thanks.
Good tips, however it should have included actual driving and cutting of grass.
Thanks! There's a future video on that. :) Thanks for the idea.
So it's like driving a boat.
I wouldn’t say that. I’ve driven many boats and none of them seem similar to driving the zero turn. Maybe I’m misunderstanding what you mean.

DONY EVER MOW IN TURTLE MODE, it literally says that in the manual, it puts so much wear on it and mess all the belts up, plz read the manual
Well at least my mower says that
Thanks. I just took mine out to check. It says that the turtle mode (referred to as Trim mode in the manual) is the proper mode for training. You’re right that once you’re a confident driver, you should use the faster speed to mow “normally”. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@PurpleCollarLife no problem just trying to help out sorry I kinda just assumed
Not often I see interactions like this in the comments of videos lol
Levers out is neutral, not the park break. Your not engaging and disengaging by moving them. You have another park break on the machine.
Actually, on this machine, levers out does engage an electronic parking brake.

Hearing protection, what's next, going to wear a mask?
I always wear hearing protection on the zero turn. It's pretty loud with that engine right behind your head.
Masks will keep you from choking to death on the grass & dust that inevitably will end up getting blown right into your face.
I rather use a steering wheel
