General Roland Bradford of the British Army was 25 years old when he died in WW1. It actually wasn't that unusual to have generals in their 20's, though they were usually appointed on their connections rather than their abilities or through promotion. Bradford on the other hand was promoted through the usual route and even won the Victoria Cross.

In my opinion, the problem with season 1 is that Blackadder is the "idiot", whereas in later seasons he is the intelligent one (which is where Rowan Atkinson shines). It's also interesting that as a general trend, Blackadder slowly slips down the class structure as seasons progress, but becomes more intelligent and down to earth which is why we can empathise with him. Season 1 isn't terrible, it's just not the same "Blackadder" in my opinion.

This is a common misconception about Edmund's character in season 1. He was not an 'idiot'. He was actually quite resourceful in his ambition and cunning, but what let him down was his tendency to be sniveling and cowardly. He also had a distinct lack of confidence when forced into hazardous situations.
While the character does retain some of the same traits as seen on season 1 throughout the rest of the series, there is a mood shift, where we see that although Blackadder is still cowardly at times, he is able to use his wit and intellect to get himself out of trouble, and he oftentimes adopts a 'devil may care' attitude as a coping mechanism. This is in stark contrast to the S1 Blackadder who becomes giddy with terror, and can barely maintain his composure. These things don't necessarily make him an idiot.
Another factor to consider is his status as a prince, 2nd in line to the throne. His ambition is naturally more heightened than his familial descendants. He spends a lot of season 1 being 'drunk' on the idea of one day becoming King.
These are just my thoughts from my own observations of this great series.

I think Series 1 gets a hard time simply because it's not series 2,3, or 4. But I think it's very good in its own right. I really enjoyed it but it has a different tone to it due to how it was filmed and the lack of a laugh track.

The first season of Blackadder is worth a watch, but it had different writers (if I remember correctly one of them was Rowan Atkinson himself). In season 2 Ben Elton (who is well known for satirical comedy) took over the writing and completely changed the premise and the main characters of Blackadder and Baldrick, turning it into a completely different show. Now whenever people think of Blackadder they think of the Ben Elton version and the first season is Blackadder in name only.

That's the thing with polling popular opinion, people see that something comes at the bottom of any list and assume that it must be rubbish. But when all options are great in their own right you're likely to overlook something good which you might be missing out on.
It's not a list where it comes at the bottom of a list of 100 series, it's on a shortlist of 4 very good series.

The issue with season one is that Blackadder is the dumbest person in the room. Always. The quality of the surrounding cast is there but the main character isn't. I like it but it's criticism is more than justified.
What I do really enjoy is that the further the Blackadders slip from power, the smarter they get. Hence the more witty they become the more they are trapped by their social station and forces around them. The Prince is an idiot, the Lord is a bumbling everyman, the princes butler is a scheming thief and cynic and the army captain is a world weary philosopher desperate to escape.
I love thT progression through the ages.

You couldn't criticise it at the time, because it was new, and nothing to base it on. The character changed 180 from then on. Wise of Blackadder to move forward chronologically. They had more cash to spend on later episodes, the comedy always was the same. The whelm of supporting characters meant this could have only been done in the UK. A US version would have been like tripe as The Office told us.

I like season 1 even with a simpering Blackadder and a somewhat intelligent Baldrick, also it provides an interesting contrast as he goes from dumb prince to down to earth working man across several generations of status sliding in each season.

For the heathens, if it wasn't for season 1 there wouldn't of been any more to follow, so obviously it did something right. Admittedly Blackadder wasn't his usual sarcastic self, but the writing was there. And let's not forget it was one of Peter Cooks final performances, starring alongside Brian Blessed, Jim Broadbent and Miriam Margolyes.

This is a misconception. Season 1 did not do well, so they altered the script to be more like the pilot, in a last ditch effort to stay on the air.

    • @SeeDaRipper...

@@remmingtonsteele2287 It's not the point, as the first season had finished. They greenlit a second series on the proviso that the script was reworked.

09:26 I had thought that colloquialism meant "inclined to father illegitimate children." As in "Whoops! I got her pregnant."
One thing you can say about Baldrick, he can't be accused of disobeying orders.

Small fact some people might not know, but they would only ever load 1 gun in a firing squad, so they wouldn't actually know who killed a fellow soldier.

If you want to complete your Blackadder experience, then watch series 1, the Christmas special, and the millennium special.
But, for me, series 2, 3, and 4 are the core. They're the ones to definitely watch.

Season 1 was written by Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson. The other seasons were written by Richard Curtis and Ben Elton. That accounts for the change in tone. In addition, season 1 was an epic with lots of sets, outdoor sequences and casts of extras. It absolutely bled money. To do the other series, they had to cut way back on expenses so smaller, more reusable sets and a tighter cast of characters were used and the writing was tighter as well.
As others have noted, Baldrick is smart in 1 and dumb in the others while Blackadder is the opposite. But I'm not so sure he gets smarter as the series progress. I think that in some ways, he fixes the fatal flaw of his previous character only to introduce a new flaw. So in season 2 he is smarter, but broke. In 3 he has money but is directly subordinate to George. In 4 he is the boss of George and has some independence and just wants to be left alone, but has bad luck.

This episode deals with the harsh reality of the way the ordinary rank and file in the British Army were delt with during ww1. Over 300 British troops were executed on orders from the British high command.
