Ricardo Ortiz-Joseph Most of the anime I've watched before didnt have much or any of those at all thats why its starting to bother me now sense I'm starting to it a lot :/
Sydney Carton I guess. But at least American heroes just leave it be without questioning too much. Anime makes such a big deal out of the protagonist's parents.
ive seen even more ridiculous ones before. cant remember most names but some is such blatant fanservice that even the most pervy people wouldn't fall for it
In regards to #1, I remember in Akame Ga Kill, Lubbock shouted the name of his "ultimate attack" as a distraction to make the enemy focus on it so he could escape with a nearby female civilian. I thought that was pretty clever.
Paradox Acres The anime is extremely different from the manga. The anime director started killing off characters 'cause he got into a fight with the manga producer and that was his way of getting back at him.
Hey ScrewAttack! I have a suggestion for a few characters for a death battle. Its Edward, Alphonse or Van Hohenheim Elric, any of the homunculus, Scar, May Chang, or even "Father"I know all of them are from FMAB but I think that if you could find any other character to match them it would turn out to be a really sick death battle!!!
Yeah, Chad's always on FUNimation's own little podcast show they do every week discussing new episodes of popular anime after they drop. Mostly after said anime has been dubbed, of course, due to FUNimation being a really good dubbing company. So of course a dubbing company would discuss the dubbed version of an anime for their podcast.
one of my favorite moments in the Jackie Chan Adventures is when a character yells out there attack and the other says "thank you for sharing!" and counters it
Linden Wong Thank you very much I forget to look up these type of things, I really can't wait, I know some people don't like dub but for comedy anime I like to laugh at it even if it's bad.
+X Life Considering its age and influence, JoJo is the reason *for* many modern tropes. I mean, right off the bat, if you want to show a character is a strong melee fighter you dress them up to look as much like Jotaro as possible...Because subtlety is apparently dead.
Tao But JoJo did contain tropes of it's own era. It has inspired a lot of stylistic tropes today, but relating to modern anime tropes there are little to none. And Jotaro is based off the prototype bancho design.
X Life Of course, it was intended to parody a lot of the tropes of its time (not that it makes it any less guilty of having them), but they're not modern. And whilst Jotaro is based on that, the flood of referential characters I'm talking about have elements of design that are clearly reference to Jotaro specifically.
Some tropes actually really help lighten the mood in what would otherwise be an over the top depressing or mature sequence. However it's also very easy to go overboard with them and ruin the whole thing. In my writings I try to keep a nice contrast of light heartedness and seriousness and the people I've shown it too always respond positively
King Kaz It's just hard to tell which stories are mature and which are for younger audiences given the differences in our cultural standards, like how Jojo's Bizarre Adventure has a mature rating on TV but it's aimed at 12 year olds in its native country. For me, it gets confusing since I don't know about the culture enough and therefore makes it hard to tell what the publishers would find ok to allow me to publish to my target audiences.
You shouldn't aspire to please publishers, just write what you want, how you want it. If you try to force something just to please someone else you'll burn yourself out very quickly and produce something that feels very forced and will likely not be well received. In my opinion it doesn't matter if you get shot down by 20, 30, 40 different publishers, you'll eventually find one that likes your work (J.K. Rowling style). Or, just do what I do and post random snips online for your friends to read and maybe it will spread. I realize you're looking to get into manga but there are enough similarities that this advice should still help hopefully.
2:05 Man I loved that part in Full Metal Panic. I should watch it again... and Azumanga Daioh, and Rune Soldier, and early Dragonball... I'm not re-watching Bleach tho.
Oh my god Strike Witches actually appeared in a Screw Attack Video at 3:09! Glorious, happy day! Oh man can you imagine of any of the witches in Strike Witches were to put into a Death battle? Oh some may laugh it off that it's a bunch of characters from a "fanservicy ecchie anime" would get the floor moped with them but if you know Strike Witches, it's world, it's lore, and the Neruoi these girls go up against and the kind of weapons, magic and magi-tech they are packing and some of the smart WW2 references the series makes; things could get interesting. I mean can you imagine Superman getting dogged piled by a bunch magical girl soldiers with animal ears and tales with big WW2 Guns, Striker units and pantsu, especially given Superman has a weakness against magic. that could be interesting. Or pitting witches against a whole bunch of other opponents? Part of me would like to see what would happen. I know who I'd be pulling for: "Theirs nothing a witch can't do."
Chad just had this look on his face at the beginning that just screams "Just doing this one for the check". Glad he's good enough with voice overs to cover that up.
+Bunny Cop oh man, not at all! I had wanted to do this list and I was the one who reached out to FUNimation asking if they wanted to be a part of it. -Chad
ScrewAttack! I figured that much once I started watching a couple episodes of Dubbletalk afterwards, but there was still just this expression on your face that screamed "impatient to cash the sponsorship check" XD I know it probably wasn't intentional, but that's what I saw!

I HATE the friendship is power trope. Not only is it annoyibg but it shows that the main character isn't able to stand up for him or her self.sometimes.
Well to be fair, the trope, in fairy tail for example, is dumb and a convenient way to power up the character; but in the case of the video, it's more about showing that the character is not all powerful and needs good allies and friends. Making a character out to be the strongest without help from friends, i.e. Goku; gives the character less flaws and no reason for secondary characters.
The problem with several of these trope like yelling out maneuver names or transformations is they become filler. Filler to fill up the rest of the episode to keep production costs down. Sometimes a show will beat that dead horse until it's compost.

But now you guy did something I will never regret with this phenomenal count down. Thanks you guys 😊
the nosebleed happens irl it stems from high blood pressure which occurs with arousal (a friend of mine really have to keep his excitement in check because he bleeds whenn he do sports and get to excited)

the power of friendship troupe
*doesn't show fairy tail*
you gotta be kidding me
The ultimate SHADE of it all.
ELIAS SALAZAR they think they're slick but i caught that b.s
I was like "where's Fairy Tail where's Fairy Tail WHERE IS FAIRY TAIL ... wow... how did they not talk about Fairy Tail..."
Sydney Carton funimation knows damn well how much friendship power up B.S that fairy tail has. like i said, yall not slick funimation
They're saving it for death battle. Need to show off how not to use this trope properly.
What about when a guy accidently falls on a girl in a lewd way and she hits him because of it
Trey Blake
That's one of the oldest clichés in the book
hell yeah that's a cliché
That cliche is one of the few thats starting to bother me
KinghtofZero00
Starting? That's one of the few that _does_ bother me. Has for the _longest_ time
Ricardo Ortiz-Joseph Most of the anime I've watched before didnt have much or any of those at all thats why its starting to bother me now sense I'm starting to it a lot :/
What about the incredibly overused cliché that almost every hero is an orphan in some shape or form.
That's not just anime. Heroes tend to never have parents in their lives.
Sydney Carton I guess. But at least American heroes just leave it be without questioning too much. Anime makes such a big deal out of the protagonist's parents.
Jason Guerrero Almost every superhero is an orphan, my boy
what about Bruce Wayne-s parents, and Peter Parker-s ones?
If you can use the orphan story right then it's ok. Naruto & Goku are what plays it good. Not sure if Luffy is one also. 🤔
I'm surprised non of these were "Crazy Hair Styles" or "Takes place at school"...seriously, why do so many anime take place at school? -_-
School is the only time in a Japanese persons life when they have any fun.
chysamere That's...kind of depressing actually. Still though, that's not really an excuse.
How about anime is made for mostly teenagers
Somecallmekj And?
Don't forget that it's standard practice to have the student council be a group of independent super soldiers who never attend class
the thumbnail is dog days
u welcome
haenex thanks fam
haenex
I hope the "plot" is good
Jon CreepSlayer it is
Jon CreepSlayer it's amazing and gotta admit very amazing story as well and no love relationship
Reshock u welcome
Again
I clicked this so fast when I saw FUNamation
I clicked so fast when I saw the thumbnail 😉
Marin is best Waifu me too
Is that the Lauren who was originally in ScrewAttack?
Jamyang Pelsang Yessir it is! She works for Funimation now!
chrisman2100 haha thought I recognized her...
love or hate dubbed anime. I would say that that's a bit of an upgrade
I knew it!
Never nuke a country twice.
Hahahah
Measure twice, nuke once.
2 seems to be a pretty effective number with nukes. It is a good thing Japan didn't need a 3rd one dropped since we were out of them
savage!
meh...
You guys forgot physics defying breasts.
fairy tail, high school of the dead, the list goes on
High schools should be no.1
ive seen even more ridiculous ones before. cant remember most names but some is such blatant fanservice that even the most pervy people wouldn't fall for it
Look at an anime called Eiken. It has the most fanservice and show forth of all than those other series.
That's pretty damn obvious.
That thumbnail, tho.
im a simple man, i see bewbs i click
Rio Dwi Saputra
I understand. All hail bewbs!
Yup Yukikaze Panettone
Now that I have finished this awesome list of things in anime, BACK TO POKEMON SUN!
I did both at the same time lol
In regards to #1, I remember in Akame Ga Kill, Lubbock shouted the name of his "ultimate attack" as a distraction to make the enemy focus on it so he could escape with a nearby female civilian. I thought that was pretty clever.
Yeah, AGK was a pretty good Anime.
(Kinda hated Lubbock for not "confessing", though)
Paradox Acres The anime is extremely different from the manga. The anime director started killing off characters 'cause he got into a fight with the manga producer and that was his way of getting back at him.
Ah, OK. I didn't know that.
Webberjo wtf why I loved those characters
Webberjo uuuuu
Hey ScrewAttack! I have a suggestion for a few characters for a death battle. Its Edward, Alphonse or Van Hohenheim Elric, any of the homunculus, Scar, May Chang, or even "Father"I know all of them are from FMAB but I think that if you could find any other character to match them it would turn out to be a really sick death battle!!!
AusBroPlayz
How about a meme character, like Moonman or Harambe?
finally a video that has anime I didn't know funimation and screwattack were so close
I still love all their videos as well just when they do a anime one I like it a lot
what anime was the thumbnail?

Dog Days someone else said in the comments
+The Neverending Twilight yeah I saw one video it feels nice things I like being in a team up
The No.8 thing ... Helga from "Hey Arnold" fits, yes or no, not just because it isn't an anime?
DracoRogue1218 I concur. Helga Pataki is what I personally define as "The American Tsundere".
KajiWakahisa
I like to call her "The American Tsundere Stalker
Ricardo Ortiz-Joseph That works, too!
DracoRogue1218 And Cindy from Jimmy Neutron
Antasma1 Oh yeah, she kinda is
Surprisingly well researched and even the pronunciation was pretty good. I'm impressed!
Holy crap! Lauren is back on ScrewAttack!
one of my favorite moments in the Jackie Chan Adventures is when a character yells out there attack and the other says "thank you for sharing!" and counters it
you forgot the giant harem with no progress which is common currently
So good to see set Lauren again ! GJ as always!
I love how DBZ is the undisputed king of number 1, I'm pretty sure almost all other animes got that trope from DBZ.
anime has been doing that long before DBZ came on the scene!
Exaclty. People are praising dbz too much.
Oh, guess I am very uninformed. Then again, I watch very little anime.
DB is the trope codifier to Calling Your Attacks, but surprising enough the creator Toriyama(?) doesn't like and tries to mock it as much as possible.
Silver Lucero But why? That's one of the coolest things about DBZ.
Or an adorable Corgi that fights alongside 4 Huntresses
And a professe... I mean Doctor. He got a PHD for a reason.
I love that Lord Death shirt Chad is wearing.
Did you see the soul eater poster behind him, I'm dying.
It's defiantly refreshing seeing chad and Lauren working together again!
wonder if funimation has the balls to do a dub for monster musume, I'd really like to see that happen... wink wink.
George Urbina Sentai Filmworks has the licence to that show... and they already announced they would
Linden Wong Thank you very much I forget to look up these type of things, I really can't wait, I know some people don't like dub but for comedy anime I like to laugh at it even if it's bad.
George Urbina well... funimation dub Keijo
Yeah I just learned about that, I'm always missing the little things, well I'm having a blast with Shimoneta dub, keep up funimation :)
Wait, is that show going to have a second season, or is already going on in Japan?
Kind of surprised to see this but so glad you guys are doing this ^^
I like how they added Fairy Tail Opening 20's song into the video. Any FT people noticed it?
FlareWiz yeah it was lit
FlareWiz
I was like hell yeah
Yay, Lauren's back for a bit!
Why did you remove your desk of death battle video
I think they replaced it with Death Battle cast which is mainly a Podcast (or they replaced Sidescrolls or whatever I don't know)
We had a bit of a scheduling mix up, it'll be up at its usual time tomorrow!
ScrewAttack! Ok, thanks for the explanation
ScrewAttack! so are you guys planning to do more videos about anime with them in future
I like the partnership between SA and Funimation; love Funimation, subscribed to it!
Calling out attack. No clip of any Jojo's series.
:(
pacific994 Maybe because JoJo doesn't have many modern anime tropes?

what song plays during number 7? anybody know it?
I love many of these tropes, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
They can be funny, but also part of what makes anime so great!
Lauren Moore
As someone who aspires to write their own manga, even in my mature concepts I would include these tropes.
Some tropes actually really help lighten the mood in what would otherwise be an over the top depressing or mature sequence. However it's also very easy to go overboard with them and ruin the whole thing. Guys does anyone know what song it is at 2:14? It sounds amazing.
what anime at 0:47
Ali Gt Not sure, but if I had to take a guess, hm... (I'm probably wrong) Either High School DxD, Rosario Vampire, or Monster Musume.
Kuusen Madoushi Kouhosei no Kyoukan
sky wizard academy
Kazuma 64
Kazuma 64 sky wizard academia
Have I been out of the loop or is this the first time Lauren's been in a Screwattack video in forever?
Because she has worked for funimation for like 2 years
Like I said, out of the loop
Yep, It's been about 3 years since I worked at ScrewAttack. I'm at Funimation now, but we actually do a podcast with Chad every week!
What about how all Martial Arts gives you super powers?
My favorite list from you guys so far
And probably ever will be
please put podcast out on apple phones I miss listening to your podcast on the way to work.
It should still have new episodes on iTunes!
3:32 "Here's a collection of cat people" **starts with a monkey kemonomimi**
Seems super legit.
2:05 Man I loved that part in Full Metal Panic. I should watch it again... and Azumanga Daioh, and Rune Soldier, and early Dragonball...
I'm not re-watching Bleach tho.
It's good to see Lauren in a Screwattack video again. I know Chad does DubbleTalk, but it just reminds me of the good old days.
Heaven's Lost Property fits almost every single one of these tropes... if anyone knows what that is...
No one would admit to obviously
Bunny Cop well considering he does this almost daily on FUNimation's channel, I don't think the look was intentional
+Bunny Cop oh man, not at all! I had wanted to do this list and I was the one who reached out to FUNimation asking if they wanted to be a part of it. -Chad
Bunny Cop can u do a Minerva vs law death battle
ScrewAttack! White beard vs tsunade
ScrewAttack! I figured that much once I started watching a couple episodes of Dubbletalk afterwards, but there was still just this expression on your face that screamed "impatient to cash the sponsorship check" XD I know it probably wasn't intentional, but that's what I saw!
Hi Lauren! Good to see you again!
i saw that toast in mouth sign and waited for sky wizards and got it
sebastian guerrero XD same
6:00 best Transformation in Anime has to be One Piece's "Never-Use Docking"
i still say number 1 should be - the power of monologue
I remember Jackey Chan had his own kids show and one of the main minions would scream his attack ( which he named things like tornado kick to the chest) and Jackey would always be confused and immediately parry it.
I HATE the friendship is power trope. Not only is it annoyibg but it shows that the main character isn't able to stand up for him or her self.sometimes.
GUADALUPE MOSQUEDA Becuz Friendship 😂😂😂
Jayson Blackhair IS POWER!
The only example of the Power of Friendship that I actually like is Persona. It is literally the Power of Friendship weaponized.
Diarakostima hmm yea i can see that but it can get ridiculous at times.
Fun fact Lauren used to be a member of ScrewAttack and played Mario Party After Dark with them but left for funimation
I'm forever disappointed that in #1 they didn't showed Saint Seiya.
Saint seiya isn't popular with gringos
Pretty good and fun list and a bit different from the other stuff so nice work you guys ^^
They actually watch anime?
Plasma Mage and hentai
Considering RoosterTeeth works with Funimation regularly it's kind of hard not to know anime
Plasma Mage yes and they all love bike no pico instead of liking bible black.
Ps. I don't actually watch hentai
Tell me the next death battle competitors, and then I'll tell you
tree hugger10 Zoro vs Erza which is already heavily leaning Zoro
great video bro really creative
ANIME WAS NOT A MISTAKE
Can you guys do a Q&A? My question is: What was the first Death Battle created with motion capture equipment?
KAAAA MEEEEEE HAAAAA MEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
The problem with several of these trope like yelling out maneuver names or transformations is they become filler. Filler to fill up the rest of the episode to keep production costs down. Sometimes a show will beat that dead horse until it's compost.
i got woried that they were going to talk about Nina when they were talking about animal people
No. Never.
Nina? from what?
Full Metal Alchemist, I'm guessing
***** oh ok.
Great video guys.
I barely ever watch anime, why'd I recognize so many of these?
Because most storytelling tropes are universal and transcend anime.
Ceul Gai Oh oops, I meant why do I recognize so many of the anime in the background. I really should've made that clear, now I feel stupid.
I've only recognized 4...
Marin is best Waifu I only know a few of them
2:53 song is Tokyo Mew Mew
I screamed when they showed YOI for the nosebleed scene xD
RIGHT??? I didn't even tell them to!
4:26 Please tell me I'm not the only one who noticed they used an instrumental version of "NEVER-END TALE" (Fairy Tail Theme)
Lauren is still as gorgeous as ever
I almost got confessed of Lauren Landa, who had worked with Funi on DXD under an alias.
What's the 3rd and 6th series Shown from #10 ? 1 from #6 ? and the show where she breaks the 4th Wall ?
#7 and no fairy tail?
i guess it was simply low hanging fruit
SuperUnhappyman
That is the de facto power of friendship anime
seeing aces death made me have some of the feels.
man i miss lauren.
Why isn't double talk in the playlist?
So, ScrewAttack developed an interest in anime, eh?
How about... Top 10 Videogames based on Anime?
OR... Top 10 Anime based on Videogames? Please mention Hyperdimension Neptunia.
Ooooooh yeah
2:48 yup Erza is going to win, you heard it here first, officially
Haha, wrong
BTW I wanted Erza to win
Number 7 I know an anime that is all about that bs
Fairy Tail
HEY!..............Yeah.
let me guess...breasts? pre-video guess.
Jose Uzamaki i say bs to fairy tail
Depends on the fight
Jose Uzamaki how is that bs? It gets them to win the fight every time
The Shin-chan Hot Springs episode is among the most epic thing you’ll ever see in your life
I clicked for shameful reasons xD
A. Shadowfurychaos same only for "research purposes"
Chad is slowly taking over all podcasts. All hail Chad the Podcast King XD
3:00 what's the name of this anime? Anyone know?
The Vision of Escaflowne.
2:48 Maybe that’s why Gentaro defeated the Horoscopes. I mean, almost EVERY trope on this list is in Fourze to check it out
2 questions. 1. what is the anime from 3:20, and 2. what is the anime from 3:26
You forgot the ultimate tropes: School Council equals World Goverment and the Hanging out at the school roof and after school is over for the day
3:03 What movie was this? I watched it many years ago and need to rewatch it ^-^
This was great!
The One Piece miniseries ChopperMan incorporates like 7 of these tropes; his signature attack is literally "cuteness".
What's the name of the beat right at the beginning when Chad & Lauren are talking? It's phat!!!
y'all should made an honorable mentions list for stuff like sneezing when someone is talking about you.
Great use of the G Gundam clips!
I have made nosebleeds into a combat art. It may be heavily taxing in the body, but it works.
''Do you have to yell your attacks every time?''
''Yeah, or else it isn't a special attack''
''Perhaps, but you're telegraphing the enemy. What if you get attacked while saying it?''
''I'll dodge and say it''
''What if you can't?''
''I'll still say it''
YAY! Return of Lauren :)
Of course I have no doubt to which you guys amaze even my mind even more with this outstanding count down.I mean ever video I learn more about my favorite games, watch fun battles, and just enjoy life with screw attack. But now you guy did something I will never regret with this phenomenal count down. Thanks you guys 😊
the nosebleed happens irl it stems from high blood pressure which occurs with arousal (a friend of mine really have to keep his excitement in check because he bleeds whenn he do sports and get to excited)
Name of anime in the thumbnail and all the other ones in this vid?
cherami leigh sean schemmel Jamie marchi Caitlin glass Brittney karbowski trina nishimura morgan garrett

World Trigger as it manipulates team battles and strategy perfectly, a touch of comedy and tons of tech action.

OVERLORD, why? It is one of the main concepts where "someone gets taken to another world" but on a whole new level.
Thanks for the birthday present! (Nov. 19)
Number 1 - "Calling the name of someone/something gives them/it a piece of your power, which is why techniques are more powerful when their names are known. "
3:27 I need to know where that is from
Wolf Children. It's a movie.
I just imagined Hulk screaming "Thunderclap" everytime he does it. It so stupid. Even for a guy who speaks in third person. XD
"Hulk Smash" is more of a warcry, but in "Avengers: Disk Wars" they seem to use it as a name attack.
