हिमाचल प्रदेश में कांग्रेस की सरकार चुनी जाने के बाद सुखविंदर सिंह सुक्खू ने रविवार, 11 दिसम्बर 2022 को मुख्यमंत्री पद की शपथ ली. इसके साथ ही सुनील शर्मा को उनका राजनीतिक सलाहकार नियुक्त किया गया है. इस बात की जानकारी सरकारी प्रेस रिलीज में सामने आई है. इसके साथ ही धनबीर ठाकुर को उपमुख्यमंत्री मुकेश अग्निहोत्री का स्पेशल ऑफिसर नियुक्त किया गया है.
राजनीतिक सलाहकार का पद सरकार में कैबिनेट मंत्री के बराबर माना जाता है. फिलहाल सुनील शर्मा प्रदेश कांग्रेस कमेट के उपाध्यक्ष भी हैं. वीरभद्र सरकार में हिमाचल प्रदेश निजी शिक्षा नियामक आयोग के सदस्य रहे हैं. इसके अलावा, जिला कांग्रेस हमीरपुर के अध्यक्ष भी रह चुके हैं. साथ ही वो हमीरपुर से कांग्रेस टिकट के दावेदारों में भी शामिल रहे हैं
