- Out of the depths, I have cried to thee.
O Lord, Hear my Prayer.
This is the first verse of Psalm 130 of the Bible. It is said to have been written during the Babylonian exile, while God’s chosen people were lost in the desert, a pained cry from the depths of despair. This verse’s universal message of anguish has inspired numerous composers and poets over the years. Polish composer Piotr Janczak sets a haunting melody to its latin translation, De Profundis Clamavi.
