The soft hum of the engines threatens to lull the pilots to sleep as they sit in their shuttles, prepared and ready to be shot out of their launch tubes at a moments notice.
'They have been on a moments notice for three hours now, however,' Gunnery Sergeant Ellis thinks with a soft sigh, marching energetically past the sleepy pilots in yet another round of readiness checks, 'There has to be a limit to how much they can hurry up and wait.'
"Gunny! How goes it! They ready to launch?" A chipper, squeaky voice calls from behind him.
"Yes, sir," He replies through slightly gritted teeth, "They have been for-"
"Good! Good," the fresh Lieutenant interrupts, "We are approaching the orbital plane of RQH now. So, they might need to be ready."
Ellis stares at the younger man with barely disguised astonishment. He had known that the butter bar was pulled fresh from the Gagarin Academy before the ODATA had launched, but it was also one of the _best_ Military Academies in Human space.
Ellis had expected some rustiness but... _this_ level of incompetence blew all of his expectations out of the ozone!!
"Sir, these pilots are some of the best weapons Humanity has to wield against this enemy, and you've been _boring_ them near to death and making them sit in their seats for hours before we even get close?"
"Preparedness is next to Godliness, Gunnery Sergeant. My father always said that." The self-assured Lieutenant says without skipping a beat, "And I don't think my pappy has ever been wrong."
Before Ellis could start to attempt to dissuade this illusion from the younger man's mind by force, a loud, blaring alarm cuts him off.
All through the hanger, the lights flash off and are replaced with a deep red glow. The horns continue to blare until there's a sudden vicious shake, that throws them off their feet as the ground beneath their feet lurches sideways.
_"All hands to Battle Stations! Launch the defence fighters!"_ A tinny, artificial voice yells over the loudspeakers, making all the flight crew around them scramble to their feet and back into their controls, shouting through their headsets over the din to communicate with their individual pilots for the launch.
"Get those fighters launched, then prepare the tubes for the rest. We are in the thick of it now, boys! Let's do this!" Ellis shouts excitedly, immediately regaining his composure now they were under fire. It was the in-between that had always gotten to him. Now that he could do his job, nothing could worry him.
"Let's get some!" The Butter Bar shouts enthusiastically to the crews as they prepare to be shot out of their launch tubes into the empty void beyond.
To face... _Them_
The Deltas.
Well, that's all the humans could call them, anyway. No other communication had ever come. Only violence.
Named after the region in space they had come from, The Deltas inhabited Delta 6, a previously unmapped sector 3LY from Base Alpha. Before the advancements in Ladar and Astrograph technology, Base Alpha was the furthest extent Humans had been able to reach safely. Once they came through, however, much interest grew about creating outposts further out, extending the reach of our species beyond the limiting wall that the large Gas Clouds that inhabit the Delta sector had allowed us before.
All we did was start looking... But, our searches hadn't gone unnoticed.
Nor was our extensions into the region uncontested.
The Delta aren't going down without a fight.
ODATA's heavy armour shudders under the combination of the sudden onslaught of the alien weaponry, along with the high velocity launches happening up and down the hull of the defence fighters.
*The battle for RQH sol has begun.*
"Marking bogies on Ladar, Gents. Fighting by the numbers. Eagle 1 send your flight towards what I've designated Tango 1 on scanners, Viper 1 take your flight to designation Tango 3, Foxtrot..." Ellis continues to rattle off orders over the Battlenet, as the Defence fighters flock around the ODATA and tangle with the approaching ordinance and fighters. Other attack craft shoot through for the designated targets, weaving through the clouds of floating debris and battery fire from the battleship as they make their way out into the black to fight.
The outside of the ODATA is a fustercluck.
Sharp clouds of debris spread outwards from those unlucky enough to be caught by ordinance from either side. Shockwaves of twisted metal and wrenching flesh expand from all the destroyed equipment, making the battle space a complete maze for the pilots who fight desperately for dominance of this sector.
Attack vessels lurch towards designated targets, launching long range barrages towards the approaching hordes of aliens as they close the distance between them to allow their on-board Marines the ability to launch their boarding parties to get in nice and close.
All over sector Delta 6, Delta ships and Human shuttles dip and weave around each other's lumbering shots as they attempt to joust and slash at their opponents weak spots.
'We must hold here,' both parties tell themselves, even as the death tolls start to rise on either side, 'We must win this.'
*'RQH is Ours!'*

@selcukcelebi Good idea. I think I'll make the Battleship ODATA a bit of a mini series. Write a couple of connected stories about the same ship and its crew. Sounds like fun!
