  • I have fallen in love with this species of cactus. But I'm already having trouble as one of them has a soft spot. I think it was starting to burn in the window. I hope moving it away will fix that. I really want these to make it and grow strong and healthy for me.

Also for anyone interested I payed 60$ for two balls stacked, so she’s not lying. They’re pretty expensive.

I LOVE your new Tephro's, they are so cool looking, thats a shame that the one has a soft spot, I have a couple of Tephrocactus articulatus that also have had a few soft spots very similar to yours on some of their global pads in the past, the soft spots then went sunken in and then hardened up again, and luckily they never rotted and carried on growing and stacking new growths, its a mystery what causes it, I thought with mine it was either a virus or due to the high humidity in the polytunnel and I sprayed them with Neem oil which helped them, its very possible the sun from the window may have caused it but I think it may be best to keep on the dry side for now and see how it gets on, keep us updated Des, and thanks so much for sharing and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Florida for a Wonderful Sunday ahead XXXX

Oh I'm glad to hear it may not be anything serious. Yes I have moved it away from the window in case the sun was just too intense. That's odd how this type of cactus tends to get soft spots that make no sense. Today it looks a little better. Maybe it prefers grow lights. The person that sold it to might have been an indoor grower. I will wait a week before I water it. The pot is completely dry now but I think it is better to wait. Thanks again for the great advice.

They're so cute! I hadn't seen this type of cactus before. They look so cool when they start stacking.

Yeah they are like magnetic golf balls. They are amazing little things. I hope that one will be ok.

They stack at generally one ball a year. I grew mine with much more cactus soil with the fish rocks mixed in well with a heavy layer on top to hold in the soil. I just got them, they were the last one the seller had so it looks a bit gimpy to me. But all it needs is love. But very interested in what yours look like now two years later.

Oh that's wonderful you grow these too. Mine are doing good. They are still in the same pots. They made it through the winter. I think the one with the blue rocks grew a new ball but it's a small one. The other has done nothing for me. I hope yours will do great too.

Hi Des, I really don't know what to say. I could not understand what is happening with it. Mushy ... hum...maybe you should avoid watering. Beeing a cactus getting less water for a while will not do any harm... Good luck 🤞

It's ok. Yeah, I think it got soft from being too hot. I will not water it and have put it in my grow light area to recover.

Did you say you rooted one in water ? Water therapy applies to these like aerocarpus and astrophytum?

Yes I did. I still have them. I have not tried it with those species so not sure if it would work on them or not. I have done it with prickly pears too.
