You're right that the conflict started about 100 years ago. In 1922, Palestine was split into 2 territories. Israel to the west of the Jordan river, and the Hashimite Kingdom of TransJordanian Palestine (Jordan for short) to the east of the Jordan river. Jordan was recognized internationally at that point and immediately kicked out their Jewish population to Israel. The "Palestinians" of today are descended from the Jordanians who refused to leave Israel to relocate to Jordan. Because they refused to leave, Israel was considered contested territory until 1948. This is what they call the Nakba. No one cares that the same thing happened to the Jews of Jordan. Jordan now refuses to acknowledge Palestinians as theirs because they are radicalized, but in 1948 Jordan sent troups into the West bank to rally the Palestinians in the first place. If Jordan had followed the 1921 agreement there would be no conflict, because there would already be a 2 state solution.
