  • Fish and chips might now only be the UK's second favourite dish - but this father and son are keeping London's fish and chips tradition alive despite rising prices and changing tastes.
In this video we spend a Friday at this London fish and chips shop on Friday - the busiest day of the week.
See behind the scenes of a London fish and chips shop during the busy lunchtime and dinner rush!

I'm 89 years old watching this at 5am and my mouth is watering !.I can remember when fish and chips cost 10 old pence and there was 240 pennies to the pound so you could get 24 portions of fish and chips for a pound sterling.A bag of chips was two pence, how times have changed. Good luck to this hard working family looks like they are making a lot of people happy.

@FindEatGoI love Fish& Spuds, wth irish parents that's a given.( All kinds) But generally i'm not the biggest fan of Batter, but looking at the quality of ur ' Fresh fish& the batter,it challenges that position.
So the nxt time I'm in London,I will jump on the train& check ur Rest out,it's most impressive.
And the locals in that community are fortunate to have ur Rest/Take Out there.
And ur Dad has done a marvelous job,he knows his business ( The one u w/b inheriting some day).Good luck.

I have noticed that most of my life I have consumed things, be it, food, entertainment, etc. I realize that this video shows that many people out there bring the world to life for me the consumer. As they said in the video, it takes a lot of skill and dedication for the father, son, and employees to run this shop. I have never met a restaurant owner who is "in it to get rich". It takes work and sacrifice. So what I'm saying is I'm grateful to all the people who bring the world to life with things for me and others to buy and experience. It doesn't happen for free. Thank you

Fish and chip shops are in challenging times. Apo and his family have my highest respect for being so dedicated to their trade. The premises are clean, well designed, they have all the gadgets, but most importantly they don't compromise on food quality. That's why they're successful, and they deserve every last bit of it.

How’s that fresh fish? Caught weeks or months earlier and delivered frozen to UK shops. Fresh fish is when you go to Greece or Croatia or similar places and local fishermen goes out fishing at 4am and comes back with fresh fish about 9am and all locals buying that fresh alive fish

It's delivered daily, never been frozen. Don't know where you live, I've got a fishmonger down the road that gets fresh fish delivered within 12 hours and then delivered the same day. I live in England, I bet you you don't.

60 year old Londoner here- just down the road in Wembley- watched this with a critical eye as I worked as a boy for me mate's Dad- who was the ORIGINAL - Cod-Father in the 70's - he would work outside Wembley Stadium - then at other football grounds - Chelsea - West Ham and my favourite was the 2 weeks of Wimbledon--- so I say critical as there is a LOT of skill to keeping the temperature correct and the cleanliness of the cooking area- and it's plain to see that father and son - Apo - run a proper gaff - top notch in ALL departments - LOVELY to see the pride they take making the best food and service they can for their customers. I'm watching this and drooling as now live in USA and LOVE my fish n chips - can't get em here in the USA - MANY, MANY posers who claim they make em- Irish and English pubs ALL proper PONY!!! Most are fish finger shaped or fancy gougons instead of a whole piece of fish and proper like dare I say and compare tempura type batter! Anyways wishing the Pisces family long, long success and will defo pop in next time over :)

As a student I had a summer job as kitchen porter in a F&C restaurant in a seaside town in the UK in the 1970s. The kitchen and fryer were down in the cellar (pre-global warming era). It was owned by an ex-US navy chef, who'd set himself up in business with his British wife. They closed the restaurant from October to April and worked hard during the holiday season. That was a different era, but quite honestly, it was the worst job I've ever had, even though it gave me an insight into the life of the seasonal trades. The hours were long, the pay was poor, and the work was hard. I left after six weeks for a better-paying job in the same town. Happily, the experience didn't affect my love of fish & chips

I'm a 69 year old Texan and my Wife is a 64 year old British Woman. That being said, I absolutely love Fish and Chips (even more than Steak!), as does my Wife and we'd eat it everyday, If we could get it. The Problem is, here where we Live in Texas, the closest thing we have to Fish and Chips is Long John Silvers (yeah, I KNOW!). The closest one of those to us is about 60 miles away and they are Expensive. Their 2 pc fish meal is about $7.00 or so and the fish portions are nowhere near as big as those in the Video (the fish in the Video almpst had me drooling! 🤤. Several years back, we'd heard a Rumor that they were going to build a Long John Silvers really close to us (it never happened) and I was torn between feeling glad that we'd be finally able to get it without having to travel an hour.....BUT sad because I knew if it happened, I'd go broke! LOL! 🤣

The golden color depends on sugar/starch content of the potatoes. Some varieties will do better at that than others. The process they used with a lower temperature blanch for the first cook then the higher temperature final fry will yield the best results, no matter the potato variety.

Although I haven’t seen this video before, this is London England, when I was in Europe,it’s so different than being in America, the Streets,Shops and the people, but the English people have a very different accent than the Average American People do,sometimes I try and Speak like them, and they know it,like People from Ireland,Scotland,Italian and Australian, but England is known for their Fish-n-Chips,but Scrod is the Best type of fish to make it,and the English people like Malt Vinegar,me I like my tartar Sauce, and some lemon wedges, here in NYC,it’s standard on most Pubs,Cafes and Restaurants,it’s Not unusual.

No, the skin is what keeps the fish in one piece prior to being cooked. I am not a lover of the skin either all you do is eat the top.laye of batter with the fish flakes under it and when finished your left with the bottom layer of batter with the skin on it. Works fine and is very tasty

  • @xjdisuehd
    @xjdisuehd 4 months ago +14

Surprising to see something from the 1960's still working perfectly!
I work in US making restaurant equipment. Fast-food places have been wanting to make their fryers automated to such a degree, that we recently made a couple hundred fryers, that are internet connected and the temperatures, timers, are all set from a central control center. Depending on seasons and prices, different oils could be used. For example, if the oil blend contains more of corn oil, the timer has to go a little longer for the first few uses of the oil as it has a little more attached or stuck water content in it, primarily due to the way corn oil is produced (wet milling of corn kernels) vs the way soybean oil is produced (solvent extraction, which doesn't include water). The entire process is so devoid of a personal touch, which I guess is the goal, to standardize the experience across all of their thousands of locations.
Versus this, where the skill and different personal touches of whoever is in-charge of frying, you can feel the difference in the food :).
