SHE'S TOO GOOD! How Swiatek Dominated Sabalenka to win Rome 2024

  • Iga Swiatek has continued her clay dominance this season winning her 3rd title in Rome, beating Aryna Sabalenka in the final. Swiatek didn't drop a set en route to her 21st WTA trophy and was clutch throughout this championship saving all seven break points faced. After now besting Sabelanka in back-to-back clay finals, can anyone stop Swiatek from winning Roland Garros?

Also, didn't the other players on the tour, including those years older than her w/ much mor experience, have the same opportunities to win those titles she has? Funny how they didn't. You'd think a superior player won them instead. It's the darndest thing.

Congratulations to my fave Iga on winning the Madrid
-Rome double! While I am excited that she won her Rome title I am concerned about defending Roland Garros! Playing seven grand slam matches is hard and I’m concerned about overall durability when she plays her first match at Paris. Once the draw comes out this Thursday, we can see how she will fare. We should watch out for Coco, Sabalenka, maybe Elena and maybe see how Osaka and Kerber hold up.

Iga and Aryna both mentioned the dropshot thing in their post-final interviews and said how it's not that easy to hit a dropshot when you play with such speed and depth that they do. So Aryna couldn't really hit a good dropshot against Iga because of the way she plays. You gotta have an opportunity to do that.

Like in Iga’s case, her physiotherapist who is also physiotherapist for few track&field athletic in the international level, gets ordered pack of information about Iga’s movements and reaction times throughout the match. If it’s just a question of the weaker day or it will show up as a consistent, then they will improve that area in so called micro doses, as you can’t make huge leap during the season. If anyone gonna beat her on clay, it’s gotta be the faster clay like Rybakina on Stuttgart or Aryna almost did on Madrid. Unless Iga is injured and has to retired mid match circa Rome 2023, then RG is going to be crazy difficult to stop her even more so than Rome.

Don’t count Rybakina out. She made Iga pick up an injury last year in Rome, and she was forced to retire. Elena can frustrate Iga if they meet, and all the pressure will be on Iga. Look at what she did at Stuttgart this year. Iga was the 5-1 favourite in that match. Sabalenka tried twice and failed, but on Elena's first attempt, she defeated Iga. Worse, her previous rounds in that tournament were all in 3 sets, while Iga finished in straight sets, but she still got the job done. Last year, She was asked what surface she preferred playing Iga and said she doesn’t mind whatever surface they meet because she knows she has the game to defeat anyone in whatever surface. She even said the courts in Roland Garros are her favourite.

H2h since the start of 2023 4-1 Elena…if anyone thinks Sabalenka and Gauff are Iga’s competition, then you’re living in a bubble 🫧 2 losses on clay comes from Rybakina or, let’s say 1 loss and 1 retirement.
