    I like the idea of drilling a hole into the side and adding a spigot with pvc pipe. That way, you can install a valve to turn the water flow on/off.

    This is my favorite Tiny House Listings video because it is so practical and easy for anyone to use. It's not exclusive to just tiny houses. It's very easy to do for long road trips, camping, etc, but can also be used at a 'conventional' house in the event of an emergency, whether it's power failure, water rations, et al.

    Go to the Dollar Store and in the kitchen isle get a large aluminum pan liner and place your bucket inside it facing the sun for added reflection. Put a thin piece of foam from a food or meat try under the bucket so the ground doesn't wick out the heat. When you shower put the outer bucket inside the inner bucket so it adds some extra pressure to the water and it will serve as a visual referrence as to how much water is left at any time. Good video!

    I actually rigged one of these up today and as I was underneath it I was suddenly afraid that the knot that I tied would fail and the bucket would fall on my head! I ran in the house and watched some videos on knot tying to make sure they were sturdy. It would suck to have your neck broken by a big bucket of water!😂

      Yea exactly i use the shower solar bags... and I've gone through 3 already my last one just broke today.. it somehow popped a hole in the side but I used a 5 gallon bucket from lowes... I drilled a 3 inch hole in the bottom and then stuck the bag inside with the hose and nozzle coming out the bottom.. so I could hang it without it braking... but whT do u know now it has A HOLE IN THE Bag im gonna do this but probably put a spicket at the very bottom or drill holes like he did.

    Awesome video, thanks for doing the full demo with timer. I built a similar setup but using just plain cold rain water. I liked to think it was making me tough to shower that way but maybe nice hot showers is the way to go :D Thanks for the inspiration.

    Thanks for posting this DIY, but it would've been nice to explain which handle to hang it by and how the in-tact bucket keeps the water IN the bucket with holes. The video goes from 2 buckets on the ground to suddenly --- a shower.

    I placed a bucket of cold water on a junk car hood and it heated up very fast. One summer, that's how I took my showers. It's gotta have a lid on it or the heat leaves as it's being made. Good job.

    I remember using a similar system but it was little fancier in some ways but not in others.
    It had a thing covering the holes attached to a chain.
    When you pulled the chain it let the water flow.
    Where it wasn’t so fancy was that it wasn’t black. It was a galvanised metal bucket and the water never lasted as long as that.
    You had to turn it on enough to make yourself wet then turn it off and lather up then turn it back off or you’d run out of water.

    Tip :D
    If you switch out the plastic with a thin sides, black (or painted) metal ones from like aluminum, the heat absorption would greatly increase.. It would be able to support use of reflectors or lens for added heat while cutting down on time

    10 minutes is good and plenty of time for a shower. I though of this idea , only with water jugs, but then I wondered how could I connect a hose to it. Do you think you could connect a hose to those buckets as well? A hose and shower head might give you more control with this gravity shower possibly. Maybe not. Just a possibility.Anyway thanks for sharing. The buckets seem to work well.

    This is so great! I'm missing something, though. So, you're leaving the two buckets on the ground until you're ready to shower? And then you separate the buckets and water starts deploying as you draw the bucket up with the rope?

    which bucket did you place on the inside ???? if it was the one with the holes , then how does the water come out after it was filled. if it was the one with no holes then how does the water get through to the one with the holes.... do I need to watch this again or did you not explain the use for both buckets ...

    • @wisewomantarot9910
      @wisewomantarot9910 8 лет назад +8

      Apparently he only uses the non-drilled bucket to heat the water in and then pours the hot water into the bucket with holes....if you watch close, there is only one bucket that gets raised up for the shower. Don't know why he didn't show the whole process.

    • @tinyhouselistings
      @tinyhouselistings  8 лет назад +21

      The bucket with no holes is on the bottom to prevent any leakage. The bucket with holes sets inside of that. When it's time to shower, simply raise the bucket with holes up to begin the shower.

    One should not have bucket shower hanging from a small tree branch just in case it breaks.
    Should set it up to be hoisted over something sturdy made to hold it. Then one has the structure in addition to the branch, line, and good anchoring spot---all to prevent an up to forty-something pound weight from dropping on your head.

  • @stsabados8979
    @stsabados8979 5 лет назад

    How was it the bucket handle could handle the weight of so much water? did you have to do anything to reinforce the handle? Or was this a high quality pail?

  • @clydealspaugh8701
    @clydealspaugh8701 6 лет назад +3

    Ok, let's think about a couple of things. Water weighs about 8.3 lbs/gal so a full 5 gal would be about 42 lbs. One shouldn't need a winch (which was mentioned in the video) to lift that. Actually, a winch such as the type one sees on boat trailers would be bad for this application. While powerful, it would be too slow in raising the bucket and much of the water would be lost. In the video a simple pulley was used which should decrease the pulling power needed considerably as opposed to a straight vertical lift. Obviously, a strong branch should be used.
    If one really needed more of a mechanical advantage, a small 4 part purchase block and tackle system is easy to make with clothesline sized pulleys from your local hardware store. That would decrease the pulling power needed to around 10 lbs. Even a young kid can manage a 10 lb pull. (hopefully, young kids have an adult nearby to help them-LOL)
    If one wanted to get fancy, one could rig a counterbalance system with a pair of small pulleys so that almost no effort would be needed to lift the bucket into position for use.
    Next, consider an enhancement. Using standard plastic plumbing fittings, create an outlet low on the side of the bucket and attach the hose and nozzle from a solar camp shower sold in your local big box store or even a sink sprayer hose. (instead of drilling holes in the bottom of a bucket) This would allow you on/off control of the flow and a fair amount of directional control as well. In addition, it would minimize wasted water from things like the lifting operation. This also would only require one bucket. No need to pour from one to the other.
    Having on/off control of the water flow would allow the use of the age old "Navy shower" technique. Wet down, turn water off, soap up, turn water on, rinse off, turn water off, get out of shower. With this technique, it is possible to shower 3-4 people on 5 gallons of water. Even if one is fairly liberal with this technique, (i.e. longer rinse time) it is still much more water efficient than a continuous flow.

    If you could find a way to easily clip the non drilled bucket to the underneath of the drilled bucket, it could catch the water to then be refilled in the top, like between showers, or switching between people in the shower, or while you're soaping up to conserve water. So like, the shower you have would still be running, but the bottom of it would be sitting inside the top of the solid bucket. Hopefully that makes sense. =)

    A screw,and piece of flat metal,or plastic that will rotate over the holes would extend the showers effectiveness,and hot water supply...

  •  7 лет назад +4

    I have an idea for you to improve your already great idea.Put a slab of plastic in the bottom of the bucket to keep the water from escaping as you lift it up in the tree.The slab has line attached and when you pull on the line it lifts the slab of plastic allowing the water to drain,the weight of the water will close the slab.Get wet let up on the line and the water stops,soap up then rinse off.That way there is more water available for a second or third person!

  • @pablobartelotte4553

    1 5 gallon bucket with lid, 1 spigot, 1 6'piece of garden hose with male end, and a sprayer. Cost maybe $5 more but you will get more efficient use of the water you just waited an hour for. Any color other than white will get your water to about 80 degrees f. Any warmer and your just spoiling yourself. Anyways who is gonna bring a 5 gallon bucket on a trail hike. Just use the hydration bladder from your pack or the bladder from box wine.

    I'm stuck between framing and plumbing for a while, and have only had freezing well water to bathe in on this farm that I'm building on. On top of that, I'm a transwoman who desperately needs warm water for soaking and shaving, otherwise I get dysphoric and deeply depressed while on the job. This solution might very well be the salvation I've needed. Thank you so much for sharing!

    • @joeylopez1695

      Really would depend on how cold it is outside. As far as it being cloudy, I'd imagine not since this uses solar energy to make the water warm so no sunlight = no heat.

      The energy it takes from the Sun is in the form of light. The black bucket absorbs the light and radiates it as infra-red (heat) energy, so what counts is the amount of light, not the air temperature. In winter, when there is less light you could use a mylar blanket or a sheet of aluminium foil as a reflector to boost the amount of light hitting the bucket. Even in dull weather, you'll get some heating effect and you could always top it up with water you heat on the fire as John suggested.

    I think its pretty good idea. However, you can buy the Colement solution for USD$11.. what I would do is use the buckets as they are... add the cold water or hot water from the stove, as required. 5 Gals is an Eion worth of water when you're camping! I'd be just standing there waiting for the water to run out! LOL. I could get four people through a shower with 5 Gal.
    I wouldn't bother with the little holes. I'd just add one of these (I know, costs more than the buckets!)
    www.homedepot.com/p/1-2-in-Brass-Shower-Valve-with-Pull-Chain-126-006/100180458
    which turns the water off in between soaping. Oh and a nozzle or cheap shower head...or just a garden hose with an on/off hand sprayer.
    BTW> I'd advocate for a rubber grate to stand on with hard plastic square underneath if you don't want dirt and mud on your legs when you're done.
    My way is more expensive I know but if your frugal with the water by using the tap you won't have to lug and waste all that water.
