It's not uncommon to see Filipinos speak another language, but it's always amazing to see foreigners speaking in Filipino (ie Tagalog). You can always see how their faces light up when you speak their language, and I'm sure you saw this firsthand when you greeted Stell in Sydney for the Wicked! Premiere.
You are our honorary Filipino Mel. Love your passion learning the language. It also shows how smart you are. Not many can easily learn a language, much more multiple languages. You're Tagalog is impressive. I'm from the Bicol area so Tagalog isn't my first language either but of course having lived in the Philippines all my life, I'm fluent. There are some deep words though that I don't understand. I think I'm better in English especially when writing, rather than Tagalog. In school when I participated in the our school paper, all the articles I wrote were in English. My Tagalog speaking friends when I worked in Manila sometimes make fun of me because I used awkward words in Tagalog or would pronounce them with a strong Bicol accent hahahaha. Examples: I use kuwarta instead of pera, pelikula instead of sine, pobre instead of mahirap, pagal instead of pagod...etc.
