Thank you for taking the time to review these books with such care. I ordered this breviary because of this video. It arrived two days ago and is already the most precious thing I own. Thank you. May God help me to never abandon this beautiful practice you introduced.
Out of curiosity I did a search to identify who uses, or sells this breviary. As it happens an American Benedictine Monastery, Clear Creek Abbey, offers this book on their website. This is not surprising. More importantly they offer a Matins Psalter in English and Latin, which they issue. The Clear Creek Abbey have short books of all the hours, which they have published under their own imprint, on their own web page and Amazon. Because their books are a bit larger I expect they would be easier for those with imperfect eye sight, such as me! The titles include: 1. Matins 2. Prime and Compline 3. Lauds 4. Vespers 5. Terce Sext and None These do not have notation for Gregorian Chant. The Abbey has a lower price then Amazon seller.
Clear Creek Abbey is a daughter to Fontgombault Abbey where the founding Benedictine Monks underwent formation. Fontgombault Abbey and Clear Creek Abbey (Diocese of Tulsa Oklahoma) use the old liturgy and the old form of the sacraments. If you purchase a medal or rosary from them they will, if asked, bless it. They provide the text of the blessing to reassure those who crave that the traditional form be followed. All this is greatly to their credit. It is well worth your time to do an image search for both Abbeys, the French Abbey is particularly handsome.
The bee in the endpapers is in fact Farnborough Abbey’s acknowledgment of its founding by the exiled Empress Eugénie, the consort of Emperor Napoleon III, whose imperial arms contain the Napoleonic ‘bee.’
@@ConvincedCatholicism I tried it for a while. It is amazing, but if you have a life it’s impossible to keep up with it. However, I just purchased the monastic matins psalter, I might create my own variation of it.
I believe the book is bound in moroccan leather. You mention the monastic diurnal a couple months back and made me look into it. I was looking for something I can bring with me and the LOTH was too big. I absolutely love this. Saint Abbeys gave me a free blessed Saint Benedict medal and a thank you note. So my thank you note to you is, thank you for you videos and I’m so happy you got a copy for yourself! God Bless!
I've been using this diurnal daily for over 3 months now (I started with the 7th edition and have now upgraded to 8th edition for 4 weeks). I love it more than anything. The most significant improvements are definitely the size and haptic and the addition of the Aperi+Sacrosanctae prayers at the beginning. I use the ribbons like you described in the video, although I could easily use one additional ribbon (for Prime).
England has a slightly different version of the Douay-Rheims Challoner edition. Here in the US and what is commonly available as reprints are the 1899 John Murphy Company American edition. All of the revisions are slightly different, to different degrees. You'll find the Baronius Press Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary has a slightly different translation as well.
Imagine my surprise being named in a video. ;) Actually, i'm not sure if it was me who asked, but either way, this ooks iuke a realy good book for praying the Diving Office, and I definitely pllan to buy a copy, based on your review. Thanks for such a great review.
The Benedictine Office is very practical for a Monk (or an early riser). It "front loads" the bulk of the Psalms and Readings in Matins, getting most of the day's Ora (prayer) out of the way before the Labora (work) begins. Prime was "suppressed" under Vatican II in the document Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy. The document was heavily influenced by the perhaps "infamous" Abp. Annibale Bugnini, also responsible for changes in the Mass. However, the Office of Prime wasn't "abolished". I'm not even sure the Church could "legally" do that. Benedict XVI allowed it for the Personal Ordinariate, hence it's in the Divine Worship Daily Office. It's an important Office because that's traditionally when the Martyrology was read out, and often parts of the Rule of St. Benedict. I think the English translation of the Psalms might be an "in-house" translation by St. John's Abbey, Collegeville, who did the first 5 editions. I emailed St. Michael's Abbey on Sunday asking about it. Re: the construction; the ribbons are the kind that fray. Instead of tying them off, which shortens them, I dipped the tips of mine in hot wax, which also gives the ends a little "weight".
I plan on dipping then in wax as well. I always wondered how and why they surpressed Prime. I have heard people describe Bugnini as some sort of a ghoul. I am sure I will have to do my own research
@@ConvincedCatholicism There's been all sorts of allegations and "conspiracy theories" surrounding Bugnini. One thing's for sure, Sacrosanctum Concilium was one of the harshest (some would say, destructive) documents of Vatican II, hitting the heart of the Church, its Liturgy. It's worth reading. Of course, with all things V2, there's the actual "word" and then there's the mysterious "spirit of Vatican II" 👻. But S.Concilium is hard to misinterpret. A book I've seen recommended as a good starting point is, _Annibale Bugnini, Reformer of the Liturgy_ , by Yves Chiron.
