      gleb zotov The first fully armored imperial cavalry, the first knights, the first professional class of well armed horsemen working systematically as a warrior class, were the Sassanian cataphracts! How ironic, the Viking cavalry was absolutely no match to Sassanian cavalry, especially up close.
      They probably developed a better navy and perhaps their Varangian guard could hold their own against even the great Dalymite warriors from Mazandaran. However no way in hell could they match up to their cavalry. Roman emperors were captured by the Sassanians three times, the Shah stepped on one kneeled emporer in order to mount his horse! This all had alot to do with Sassanian knights who the Romans extremely feared and couldn't defeat.

      +Jade Tiger The Romans probably feared the Persian horse archers more than their heavy cataphracts. Cataphracts were few in number, expensive, and all that armor was uncomfortable to use for long periods of time in such hot weather. At Carrhae, the Romans were primarily defeated by the Persian horse archers. The cataphracts were unable to break through the Roman infantry formations. Roman commanders even instructed their legionaries to use their pila as conventional thrusting spears against charging cavalry rather than to throw them.

      Uralic are northern European languages. The Altaic language idea has been discredited in modern times - Turkic, Mongolic, and Eastern Siberian languages are not as closely related as once throught. Japanese, Korean, etc are not related to either of these. And Turks from Turkey are not remotely similar to ancient Turks. Modern Turks in Turkey are similar to Europeans and are basically Caucasians (mixture of Greek, Persian, Armenian, Anatolian, etc) with some Eastern Asian heritage. The ancient Turks were more Eastern Asian and more mixed instead of mostly Caucasian.

    People please, when he's talking about best/worst factions in the game, he's looking at multiplayer battles, not campaigns. Any faction can be a good faction in campaign depending on unit roster, unit accessibility(thats a huge one), starting position, economic potential, etc. In campaign the player usually has an advantage simply on the basis of it's a human mind vs something that other human minds have tried to make work like a human mind. But when it is human vs human and skill is relatively equal between the players, then yes it does start to boil down to unit power, and their stats

    The huns are most definitely not one if the weakest factions and let me explain. I started out playing this game as the huns on legendary the second I got the game and since then I've gotten my ass completely handed to me twice where I lost every one of my hordes and had to restart. My third play through I've finally figured it out and the huns are absolutely dangerous but not for the reasons you think. You rate the huns so low because your looking at factions ability to fight conventional battles well... the huns never fought conventionally and their unit composition resonates that. For starters most of the huns units especially their cav have average all round stats save for their melee attack which is absolutely through the roof on all of their units. Even their horse archers have upwards of 50 melee attack meaning they will hurt you in melee even if you do hurt them. Now. That doesn't seem like that great of an idea to have horse archers fight in melee right? Wrong! The huns best strategy would probably be to mass their best horse archer unit. Run around firing arrows and tiring the enemy out and then bull rushing with all of your horse archers. This accomplishes a number of things. You have missile superiority and a mobile advantage. So you win the skirmish exchange making them take more deaths due to missles than yourself. Then when you bull rush the enemy after they have been softened up by arrows the huns units even their horse archers have another brilliant ability called Scare (everyone). Since the hunnic horse archers have such incredible melee attack they cause enough casualties with their arrows and their initial bull rush to cause the enemy to waver and then the scare ability does the rest making them flee. Another thing about the huns. Their melee cav all has a huge bonus when fighting against cav which doesn't show up in the stat bar. I have never ever lost a cav on cav fight as the huns. The huns also have the fastest cavalry in the game with most of their cav over 90 speed.

      Few people play MP, that's true, but the fact is that relative unit roster strength is almost completely irrelevant in SP: the key factor in difficulty is your starting strategic and diplomatic position, and your armies will always be good enough to do the job against the AI provided you can actually field them. This kind of analysis only really makes sense for MP.
      Anyway, it's a bit pointless to compare TW Huns to the real thing, because TW does a terrible job representing them. You can't depict this period without a proper vassalization/confederation system (for the Huns and the Germanic tribes) and a foederati system (for the Romans). Much of the Hunnic army was made up of subdued Germanic tribes - alas, not in this game.

    Huns are the best faction in the game just nearly nobody can use it. I razed and pillaged 75-80% of the map including Rome and Constantinople and I won battles against enemies 4-5 times bigger than mine. Infantry is not relevant with the Huns I only used horse archers and shock cavalry with the Huns and in siege battles I bought 4 heavy infantry and 1 onager, the others were always horse archers and shock cavalry. As I said Huns are the best IF you can use it. I ended with a cultural victory in Hard difficulty as the strongest army in the campaign. I stormed through Eastern and Western Roman Empire without any hardship then I gone to North Africa and finaly I destroyed the Sassanid Empire. The key with the Huns is the Horse archer tactic without any infantry.

      thats true sassanid campaign is so easy, i started mi first campaign with the jutes and conquered 92 cities, while 38k of my incomes were from them, and i still was poor cause i didnt know about the huge corruption, but my frontiers joined theirs, and they were just waiting for me,with 12 full armies, and they didnt care about losing the 38k income of the route, they were freakin rich and everybody was their puppet so i couldnt expand my jute empire.So i decided to try a sassanid campaign,and now Im on 406/407 and i have 8 full armies with catapults, elephants, mercenaries and so on,only 15 cities,with an income of 15k per turn as i have 13 puppet states and military aliances with both roman empires, so they give me gold for joining wars against people i havent found yet.Also is so easy to conquer as them,as your shock cav fcks every light troop, the archers are strong,and you can easily buy crossbows,as cav too.So, they may be weak fighting,as their melee cav sucks and shock is average, but sassanid campaign is soooo easy. Even if they get the charge right any decent melee cav will melt them. I have never lost to a player using the Huns, in fact I think I've never lost more than 50% of my men agaisnt someone using them. But there were only a few battles, 5-6, noone uses them... its fun because im playing a lot of campaigns now on legendary, and i have to say that used by the AI, the sassanids and the huns are a really big headache. Sassanids always do the same, they manage to get your troops blocked with armenian spears and sogdian warriors while huge amounts of kurdish archers are firing over your infantry and if you try to go for them with your cav, theyll get stuck by lakhmid scouts, then camel raiders and cataphracts while theyre massacred by the archers,and if you lose your cav your infantry will suffer heavy casualties due to shock cav or savaran cav,specially the mercenary with partian shot. I find it really hard specially with the eastern roman empire, as my infantry is armoured legio and lanciarii seniores wich is really slow, and my cav is almost all mercenary mounted persian warriors and equites promoti, with only a few units of scholae. And then the huns are a real pain in the ass, because they cant to a thing in melee range, only the chosen uar warrior can bring some problems, but the problem are the hunic mounted archers and the devil archers.Basically your infantry cant kill them because they simply run ro the limits of the maps, and in the process your units die,and if you try to kill them with cav,they get murdered by arrows coming from 3 directions. Ive seen that the only way to win is to eliminate all the melee units and then form defensive formations with the infantry and wait till they run out of ammo or get too close. those factions are op in AI hands because they also use advanced units not only cheap ones. Its fun how the most useless factions for online are op in campaign

    When we talk about Huns or more general Turkic or steppe warfare, mass fighting does not work at all. Mobility and organisation are their charms. Its like you ask from a kung fu fighter to make wrestling. No. Huns strenght is their Horse archers. Shock cavalry and skilled infantry only finish the work after that. First, main actors a.k.a. horse archers finish off the enemy cavs. Without horses, enemy gets crippled. Then rest is done by the infantry & shock cav. Also horse archers charges from behind. If enemy tries to turtling, Huns use catapults. Also many times I made this method: ”Attack, use all of the arrows from horse archers and retreat” to weaken the enemy. So Huns are not weak at all.

    Total disagree about the Western Roman Faction. It all depends on which troops you have on hand for the right job. For example. To fight the hardest faction which would be the Huns(earlier in the game) you would need two types of troops. #1 Conuti Senoires Spearmen, #2 Large Onagers , which hurl incendiary rounds which can reach very far distances. Aimed correctly they are devastating for cavalry. Also troop formations also play a big role in this strategy as well. Basically have your Spearmen surround the Catapults and have your own cavalry units support the rear. and have the units in testudio formation. It's a winning formula that works everytime. I understand that the Western Roman empire is the hardest faction to play, but it's the most challenging and most fun in my opinion and I've learned alot. As long as you secure all of Italy, Spain, North Africa and half of Gual. Over time you can build wealth. Currently I have 1,000,000 gold in the Treasury and an income of 35,000 per turn. And that's with my taxes on low in order to keep the populace happy, feeding them is the problem. I'm going to use this wealth to rebuild my Empire and then make the empire whole again.
    Amen.

    okay guys first off The Huns are actually famous for their cavalry, that's the truth, but the game got it wrong by making it expensive. Their horse archers are very light but very fast and just surrounds the army and shooting them. Their usual tactics, and then attacking with infantry. And actually the sassanids has good archers, not from history, but from the game. Their Persian archers can kill half of my Eastern warriors(Very Heavy infantry) before dying off which is insanely crazy

    Highly disagree in regards too the huns. Warriors of the Steppe relied on speed and mobility rather than stopping power. All of their abilities, research and stats reflects this. In a conventional melee fight, sure they'd lose, but you'd never get close enough to initiate one. Historically, the Europeans fighting the Huns/Mongols would get withered down with horse archer fire before being finished off with a final charge from their lancers. In most fights, done correctly the Huns barely lose any men at all. Now the drawback the huns have is attacking Cities/Fortifications where mobility cant be taken advantage of and requires brute force, and for reasons like this is why Attila in history never attacked constantinople. In regards to the absurdly good melee infantry. Idk what the fuark CA was on about there.

    I have tinkered with the wre's roster for months, and yes, they have some of the worst cav in the whole game. BUT, the noble javelins are actually great at killing cav, due to their spear and high damage ranged attack. Ive tested them against tagmata, and i was perplexed at how well the trade off was. They are expensive though, so use them extremely wisely. Always have them on the flanks, with a good spear wall and crossbows to actually kill the enemy army. I quite like the good roman spears (forgot their name). They are very flexible and i would say are probs the second best spear unit in the game (first being masqal spears imo). The only damaging sword unit wre has is the herculanii senores, which are really expensive so i would mainly comprise the melee line out of spears which are more cost efficient and generally better in melee. Bottom line is, dont get cav, get the noble foederati javelinmen on your flanks, and make a solid spear line to defend your missile units. Hopefully this is a helpful guide for folks wanting to play wre and not get creamed by factions with better cav.

    • @Pine89SOH
      @Pine89SOH 9 лет назад

      the ones with parthian shot either don't have enough ammo/damage or are too slow. if you want ammo and speed you gotta spend 800 for 1 unit, while ERE for the same amount of money can bring 1 tagmata. also horse archers take up slots, so you'll have something less in other categories. you wouldbe tempted to go with less infantry as the huns, shame that that's the only good thing about them. so you either go with less archers or with less cav, which is terrible anyway, no matter how many you bring.

The key is using ur cav just for the purpose of shielding ur Uars from enemy cav whenever ur cav gets engaed with a enemy cav u suppord immediately with uars, off course the opponent have to send his own support then. Feel free to test what happens in a mix of a steppe lancer / elite lancer with an uar against an goldlevel germanic cav and 90 percent of germanic inf in a mix. GG

    This review is only based on stats, so it's not too useful. Western Roman infantry formations make them tremendously effective on defensive positions and able to resist almost any frontal attack.
    The problem with WRE is immigration and continuous enemy influx, that makes your territories almost unbereable due to unrest.
    Huns are also hard to play, they kill as hell (terrible arrow clouds, and skirmish, easily decimate enemy cavalry and then rush infantry with arrows and devastatingly charge them when the morale is low), but AI huns have millions of free spawned armies while huns player struggle to have a decent amount of them.

  • @alex_zetsu
    @alex_zetsu 6 лет назад

    The WRE is trash, but aside from the cavalry weakness (easily remedied by holding onto Britannia since that place and the province the franks start in contain a nordic merc marauders that beats all early and mid tier barbarian, African, and hun melee cavalry), you pretty much missed out on the top seven reasons why it sucks so bad. Or 8 if you count "Huns are hardcoded to come for you"

I cannot agree therefore with the Sassanid Empire being weak at all. It has some of the most robust Units that aren't even included on the list of Infantry available on quick battle. Nay, you're wrong to underestimate the power of the Sassanid Empire under the control of a competent player.

    Dude western Roman empire is meant for stationary fighting, No need for good cav when you can sit and eat the cav charges and archer fire while your javelins do the work. The Sassanids have good armoured lancers which melt non braced infantry for breakfast as well as crossbow cav that is a mobile buzz saw as well as having sufficiantly good infantry to hold the line. The huns are about speed and good micro, in multiplayer all factions are strong and all you can win with. You fail to see such and instead see factions with a weak spot as immediate garbage. In truth you fail to realise the Effectiveness each roster holds within it and Deicide not to realise their potential because you see anything unconventional as something which has No use, all three of these factions require you to use their strengths well. I have won with all these against Evenly Mached opponents playing the „best” factions by using unconventional or even cheesy tactics to win battles that you would be crushed in if you were to use conventional methods. You can not just say that the faction is bad because What because they do not have germanic horse, vandal raiders crush germanic horse easy
