Some people hate the bigotry doesn't belong on the bridge comment and say it doesn't belong anywhere. Which is what Kirk is saying. You want to be a bigot? Go do it in your room. Stay home. You want to do your job? You want to play with others? Then lose it. Plus it was the 60's. Anyone say there was a place bigotry didn't belong anywhere was huge.
Human society will always have its bigots. What we must avoid is equating being a bigot to having standards of behavior and decorum. Without such standards, there can be no society.
It's a great line and it totally belongs but for someone to say that it shouldn't exist in the future doesn't understand the point. Like any human emotion, it resides in us and we can not be separated from us by an outside force. Hell, even Vulcans with their supposed superior logic fall prey to the notion that those who don't think like a Vulcan are lesser. Kirk didn't ask the impossible, just for a sailor to do his duty and be a dick on his own time.
It's absolutely amazing how much Kirk's "I need my pain" speech aides the impact of his speech in Undiscovered Country. Kirk's always taken the deaths of those under his command or his protection to heart and used the pain to ground himself. Dr. McCoy knew this well enough during Search for Spock. Kirk turns death into a fighting chance for life. It's why Kirk is a great character and why nobody can really beat William Shatner's portrayal of the daring captain.
NotJeff here. The greatest, also from A Taste of Armageddon: "It's instinctive. But the instinct can be fought. We're human beings with the blood of a million savage years on our hands, but we can stop it. We can admit that we're killers, but we're not going to kill today. That's all it takes. Knowing that we won't kill today. Contact Vendikar. I think you'll find that they're just as terrified, appalled, horrified as you are, that they'll do anything to avoid the alternative I've given you. Peace or utter destruction. It's up to you. " I've thought about that speech a lot in this past year.
I have taken into heart his "I dont want my pain to go away, I NEED my pain" speech from ST5. It's my favorite scene in that movie and my fave Kirk speech of all time.
Picard has a semi-sequel to that speech in Nemesis, when he's asking Data whether Picard, himself, would be the same man if he'd lived Shinzon's life instead. It's one of the rare moments where Picard is shown to be unsure of himself, and I love the back-and-forth between him and Data. It's definitely something to ponder, once in a while...
It reminds me of a fantastic quote from a book called Diary. "It is hard to forget the pain, harder still to remember the sweetness. For we have no scars from when we are happy. And we learn so little from peace".
Spock's obituary only at no. 8? How dare you? I'm convinced Shatner was fighting actual tears when his voice trembled before saying "..human", because it was so well written.
My fav Kirk speech without doubt is the speech at the end of Wrath of Khan & imo it has no equal & still bring a tear to my eye esp with Amazing Grace playing in the background, soul stirring.
thanks for including the reveal of the "undertaker" in WWF... totally matched the awe of this film with what was going on in my WWF fan life as well... so lost in throwbacks right now! lol ...
I know we were never going to get two entries from the same movie, but I always liked Wrath of Khan's "We tried it once your way, Khan, are you game for a rematch? Khan. I'm laughing at the superior intellect."
I think what Kirk said in reply to Sarek's query about the price paid being "Your ship... Your son...?" should have been in there Kirk: If I hadn't tried, the cost would have been my soul
I need my pain was an awesome and powerful speech. Of all of Kirk's moments, I loved this one the most. Too bad the movie wasn't that great, but that speech . . . was incredible!
Kirk's greatest speech came just after the cameras stopped rolling, in Star Trek 4, where he addressed the Federation Council and demanded that Section 31 not be allowed to prevent Worf, the greatest poker player ever, from winning a hand ever again after, "The Emissary."
I always liked the "Don't let them promote you." It perfectly showed how much he regretted becoming an admiral, and how hard it was to get out of being one. Besides, it justified the TNG movies, lol.
Brilliant works Sean. Great presentation well performed as well. Thank you for your work and all Work of Trek culture the whole team well done indeed bring back. Great memories. Thanks for the fun until next time you are appreciated. Don’t forget that that’s all for now.
Nice nod to Star Trek V, Mr. Ferrick. Thanks for this one. Appreciate it. Captain James Tiberius Kirk remains Starfleet's & Star Trek's Best & Greatest Captain. 🖖 And, Yes, Star Trek VI is also my absolute fave Star Trek film. My faves from this list are: The "Risk is our business" speech from Return to Tomorrow, and Jim's "Don't let them promote you" entreaty to Picard in Star Trek: Generations. A speech that should've made the list: Capt. Kirk's speech regarding the American Constitution in "The Omega Glory". (Btw, "A Private Little War", like "A Taste of Armageddon", was an analogy to the war at the time in Viet Nam).
Mirror, Mirror should definitely have been included. "The illogic of waste, Mr. Spock. A waste of lives, potential, resources, time.I submit to you that your empire is illogical because it cannot endure. I submit that you are illogical to be a willing part of it. ... In every revolution, there's one man with a vision." Another contender from that episode is, "Spock, you traitorous pig! I'll hang you up by your Vulcan ears! I'll have you all executed!"
Thank you for that wonderful video. 🙏 These are a lot of very good and impressive speeches and it‘s hard to choose a favourite one. Mine is „I need my pain. From my point of view it is an important part of what makes us human. Sometimes it‘s hard to bear but without my pain I would never be the person I am.
I rank this bit from "The Corbomite Maneuver" slightly higher than the one cited: "What's the mission of this vessel, Doctor? To seek out and contact alien life, and an opportunity to demonstrate what our high-sounding words mean. Any questions?"
Some do, but the wise know that with freedom comes accountability. That being said, we must also remember that open disagreement is the most common springboard of useful change. Saying what we think must be allowed lest we all become afraid to think, with tyranny and stagnation the inevitable results.
5:44 now that was a surprise to see from a German standpoint XD - but let me tell you a bit here: many movies about the GDR should be titled: "this was not truly how it was like" XD
I feel like this list is backwards. "Risk is our business..", Kirk's eulogy, and "You've made war neat and painless..." are easily the most iconic in the entire franchise. But you put them last...?
Was it a Very Hot Day when You Recorded this ! I HAD TO STOP THIS AND WALK AWAY a FEW TIMEs BECAUSE OF THE TWO Mountain s Under the White Mist ! ? your t ~ shirt ;
Nice video. Good choices and good comments. I appreciate that you couldn't use the actual clip with Kirk speaking, but perhaps you should have made that clear in your opening. But then, we can probably all hear his voice speaking the words anyway.
Is #9 a speech, though? // A Private Little War references US fighting in Vietnam, not Korea, though both were proxy wars. -- Just to nit pick Generations for one more thingie... I cannot imagine how cold it would have to be to make it comfortable to wear a turtleneck, vest, AND Monster Maroon tunic together.
Spock actually agreed with Stiles in terms of the Romulans And both were right. A brilliant twist that is overlooked and would not fly in today's pc world
Number 1 should be “It applies to everyone or it means nothing!” How that didn’t even make the list is a COMPLETE DISSERVICE this list. E Plab Neesta!!
They were humanitarians and statesmen, and they had a dream, a dream that became a reality and spread throughout the stars, a dream that made Mr. Spock and me brothers "Whom God's Destroy"
Wow, way to go, TrekCulture, for including the footage of Trump supporters who have said bigoted things. (No, that's not sarcasm, since I know sarcasm can be hard to detect in brief comments.)
I love how you're talking about being against bigotry and not singling people out, yet at the same time, show images of conservatives who are actually trying to protect free speech. C'mon. You guys are better than that.
Had enough of Kirk he’s been done to death. There’s so many better characters out there that deserves stories movies TV shows. enough with Kirk already
Not sure if it matters to the channel or to you Sean but I’m unsubscribing. I am a massive Star Trek fan but you didn’t need to add American politics into the video. Just no need for it at all. No reason to take a shot. Picard himself knew when to hold back his vices. Use this as a learning moment; the line must be drawn here
I didn't hear the comment yet, but whatever it is, whether or not I agree with it, I'm not going to be a crybaby about what other people feel like saying
Me too. I've seen Sean do that before and as soon as I heard him say "bigot," I knew it was coming. Ironically though, he's the one acting like the bigot as per it's definition: "one who is prejudiced against or antagonistic toward a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular group." Funny how he didn't mention DEI hiring practices which LITERALLY hire people based on their skin colour. FREE SPEECH is just that. Speech with no limits. History has shown us that the very first move made by every dictatorship which rose to power, was to control the speech. That's why it's the FIRST amendment. Allowing people to say something you don't like is the very definition of democracy. The moment you try to attach is the moment you take your first step to a dictatorship. You can always vote yourself into a dictatorship but you can never vote yourself out!

Same here. Made a huge difference in my life.
It was the outstanding moment of awesome in an otherwise troubled movie.
So many people tell you to let the pain go, I believe in remembering the lessons pain teaches which is Kirk’s point.
Picard has a semi-sequel to that speech in Nemesis, when he's asking Data whether Picard, himself, would be the same man if he'd lived Shinzon's life instead. Hear, hear. It was well written and well delivered.
"What does God need with a starship?" - James Tiberius Kirk
Yes, one of his best lines in my opinion.
My fav Kirk speech without doubt is the speech at the end of Wrath of Khan & imo it has no equal & still bring a tear to my eye esp with Amazing Grace playing in the background, soul stirring.
Had a commander tell us in 1980 to leave our bigotry in our quarters it had no place on the bridge ( on a destroyer).
Its OK when Kirk and crew does it on the Enterprise, because that is a Battlecruiser 😉
it just guts me the way Kirks voice cracks when he says "human"
Did you just casually quote The Man of La Mancha? Nicely done!
A TOS episode?!? Be still my heart!
thanks for including the reveal of the "undertaker" in WWF... totally matched the awe of this film with what was going on in my WWF fan life as well... so lost in throwbacks right now! lol ...
I know we were never going to get two entries from the same movie, but I always liked Wrath of Khan's "We tried it once your way, Khan, are you game for a rematch? Khan. I'm laughing at the superior intellect."
"You've managed to kill just about everyone else, but like a poor marksman, you keep...missing...the target."
Remember like Avery Brookes and Patrick Stewart, William Shatner had done Shakespeare plays....that teaches you to make a good speech.
Now that you've said that, I *really* want to see Shatner as King Lear...
I think what Kirk said in reply to Sarek's query about the price paid being "Your ship... Your son...?" should have been in there
Kirk: If I hadn't tried, the cost would have been my soul
I need my pain was an awesome and powerful speech. Of all of Kirk's moments, I loved this one the most. Too bad the movie wasn't that great, but that speech . . . was incredible!

Idk why I was expecting Captain Kirk clips, I guess thats on me
Honestly I was expecting the clips too lol
I guess it's a copyright thing.
@ probably
Watch the episodes. 🖖
I like the nod to "Dogma" with the inclusion of Alanis Morissette when you say "God". :D
"Would it have hurt us, I wonder, just to have gathered a few laurel leaves?" who mourns for adonais.
I always liked the "Don't let them promote you." It perfectly showed how much he regretted becoming an admiral, and how hard it was to get out of being one. Besides, it justified the TNG movies, lol.
"Risk is a part of the game if you want to sit in that chair!" - Kirk, to Harriman...
Must be cold on that Holodeck
I was trying to ignore that but I noticed. LOL!
"I need my pain" speech is my favorite
Love it. Although I think the Corbomite Maneuver quote should have been #1. As William Shatner would say, "This list has been sabo-taaa-ged."
'I need my pain' is metal af
Thanks, T.C.!
Brilliant works Sean. Great presentation well performed as well. Thank you for your work and all Work of Trek culture the whole team well done indeed bring back. Great memories. Thanks for the fun until next time you are appreciated. Don’t forget that that’s all for now.
6:45, This quote stands out for me.
Nice nod to Star Trek V, Mr. Ferrick.
Thanks for this one. Appreciate it. Captain James Tiberius Kirk remains Starfleet's & Star Trek's Best & Greatest Captain. 🖖
And, Yes, Star Trek VI is also my absolute fave Star Trek film.
My faves from this list are:
The "Risk is our business" speech from Return to Tomorrow, and Jim's "Don't let them promote you" entreaty to Picard in Star Trek: Generations.
A speech that should've made the list:
Capt. Kirk's speech regarding the American Constitution in "The Omega Glory".
(Btw, "A Private Little War", like "A Taste of Armageddon", was an analogy to the war at the time in Viet Nam).
You left out Mirror, Mirror. In every revolution, there is one man with a vision.
Star Trek Continues did a great job with that as well
Classic Kirk
The Greatest CANADIAN🍁 Starship Captain Ever 👊😊✊😆👌😆👍🍁🍁
Mirror, Mirror should definitely have been included. "The illogic of waste, Mr. Spock. A waste of lives, potential, resources, time.I submit to you that your empire is illogical because it cannot endure. I submit that you are illogical to be a willing part of it. ... In every revolution, there's one man with a vision."

Thank you for that wonderful video. 🙏

Absolutely brilliant analysis, thank you..
Kirk's speech at the end of Omega Glory should have been here. The words of the E Pleb Neesta r for all, not just the Yangs.
You missed the Mirror Universe speeches with Spock lol
Another good one.
I rank this bit from "The Corbomite Maneuver" slightly higher than the one cited: "What's the mission of this vessel, Doctor? To seek out and contact alien life, and an opportunity to demonstrate what our high-sounding words mean. Any questions?"
number 8 brings a tear no matter how many times you watch it -- regardless of knowing that wasnt really Spocks end
Some people think free speech is saying things without consequence.
"we don't have freedom of speech to talk about the weather"
Some do, but the wise know that with freedom comes accountability. That being said, we must also remember that open disagreement is the most common springboard of useful change. Saying what we think must be allowed lest we all become afraid to think, with tyranny and stagnation the inevitable results.
One of the tenets of fascism is freedom from responsibility aka, "I was just following orders."
Sean, you saying that STVI is your favorite got this video a like, and you another up.
I've read that A Private Little War was really a commentary on the Vietnam War.
Perfect shirt for this video topic!
You misquoted Wrath of Kahn. It's "encountered" not "met".
My favorite speech of Kirks is yet to come, I have high hopes for when he gets his field promotion after Pike has his accident.
5:44 now that was a surprise to see from a German standpoint XD - but let me tell you a bit here: many movies about the GDR should be titled: "this was not truly how it was like" XD
4:41 Whoa! Mine too! 😎
Captain….. Kirk had the….. best…. Speeches…. Ever.
😂
I just used "Risk is our business" as the title and tagline for a poker article lol ...
Alanis Morrisette as god... Dogma reference.😂
I feel like this list is backwards. "Risk is our business..", Kirk's eulogy, and "You've made war neat and painless..." are easily the most iconic in the entire franchise. But you put them last...?
He was the most human, that's why we played Amazing Grace at this funeral.
EXCELLENT !!!
I clock your Dogma reference Sean.
I really wish you would/could play the clip audio for videos like this!
I liked immeadiately after reading go climb a rock, go figure...
Was it a Very Hot Day when You Recorded this ! I HAD TO STOP THIS AND WALK AWAY a FEW TIMEs BECAUSE OF THE TWO Mountain s Under the White Mist ! ? your t ~ shirt ;
Always dress for success, or at least subliminal messaging. Love the 'Go climb a rock' tee shirt 👍
Risk is our business is the one I think of first
I can't find the video with Captain Janeway's speeches. Anyone got the link?
Thanks. 🖖🏻
Nice video. Good choices and good comments. I appreciate that you couldn't use the actual clip with Kirk speaking, but perhaps you should have made that clear in your opening. But then, we can probably all hear his voice speaking the words anyway.
I have had them all memorized for decades. I think I know more Kirk lines than Jesus's.
@4:29 Dammit... 😭😭
Love the real-world cutaway examples. So (sadly) prescient....
Different person but that was Captain Stiles. Anyway the Omega Glory speech about our Constitution comes to mind if I have the right episode
Kirk’s speech at the end of The Omega Glory should have been #1. Anybody who doesn’t like that speech is just unAmerican.
8:07 Interesting conflict with how Picard turned out.
What was with the Alanis Morissette video popping in?
It's more of a line delivery than a speech, but I'm partial to Shatner's performance for "Klingon bastards, you've killed my son."
Everything, In a nutshell... how awesome r u guys??
Does no one remember his speech to Palomas about being human in "Who Mourns For Adonis"?
was it a little cold up on the rock you climbed, Sean
there's something on the wings SOMETHING!
I need my pain.. damn
"That sense of Enterprise"? Does anyone else see what they did there? 😏😆
Spock actually agreed with Stiles in terms of the Romulans
And both were right.
A brilliant twist that is overlooked and would not fly in today's pc world
Did Star Trek ever revisit the First Federation? If no, they should...
Seán, love your work at Trek Culture, but we need you to do more at Who Culture too. Ellie needs a break...
I don't remember the rock band in that movie. seen at 9:52
Number 1 should be “It applies to everyone or it means nothing!” How that didn’t even make the list is a COMPLETE DISSERVICE this list. E Plab Neesta!!
> If James T. Kirk doesn't inspire you, who else in Star Trek can?
Dax does :)
A man is a miserable pile of secrets.
"What is a man, but the sum of his memories? We are the stories we live, the tales we tell ourselves!"
They were humanitarians and statesmen, and they had a dream, a dream that became a reality and spread throughout the stars, a dream that made Mr. Spock and me brothers "Whom God's Destroy"
I'm not one that thinks the bigotry speech is bad I mean they later in life went their own ways by Star Trek 3
🤔 Did Picard take Kirk's advice? 😏
Until every form of criticism is simply called bigotry to shut it down...
Wow, way to go, TrekCulture, for including the footage of Trump supporters who have said bigoted things.
(No, that's not sarcasm, since I know sarcasm can be hard to detect in brief comments.)
Robert Picardo is right! We need inclusion! We can't have our leader calling half the country "garbage."
Wow 3 views
And first comment
why DOES God need a star ship lol
Captain Kirk is climbing a mountain. Why is he climbing a mountain?
Excuse me, where was "no bla bla bla!"?
I love how you're talking about being against bigotry and not singling people out, yet at the same time, show images of conservatives who are actually trying to protect free speech. C'mon. You guys are better than that.
LoL
Had enough of Kirk he’s been done to death. There’s so many better characters out there that deserves stories movies TV shows. enough with Kirk already
Not really sure why you felt the need to stray into politics. I come to trek culture for an escape.
Only number 8????? Are you drunk?
41st like!!
