Shur-Line Paint Edger - Cut in Trim Quickly - Does it WORK?

  • Is this a useful tool or just a gimmick? For me, I find it useful and takes some of the headache away (and hand cramps) from cutting in trim the old way....with a paintbrush. Everyone has their own opinion, but for me, I like having this tool around to speed up my paint jobs around the house!

    I used to paint professionally, and was taught how to use a brush to trim, but this is actually a pretty good tool. You have to just keep a few things in mind with this tool. Do not overload it with paint, and definitely brush the excess off like he did prior to placing it on the wall. Do not put too much pressure on it either, just enough to get a clean solid line application. Too much pressure will push the paint out into the guide wheels. Your line is only going to be as straight as the wall you’re against too. Some ceilings can have texture straight to the wall line. This will sometimes be an obstacle, and if you’re not careful, any debris falling from the ceiling edge can end up in your paint line, and don’t rush it either. The tool saves time, but if you’re applying it too fast, it’s easy to get the guide wheels off the line.

    I really like this tool, have been using it for many years. I have found the best way to put paint on the pad is to put paint in a condiment bottle and squirt the paint on the pad. You can now walk all around the room without the need for a pan.

    Ive been a painter for 42 years. This the best tool ever invented for painter's. I use this to cut ALL my ceilings in, and have for 10 years. It takes time to learn and get a feel for it. But once you do you can cut your cut in time by 3/4.

    I just used again, a couple of days ago. Accent walls, cut in inset curved windows and ceilings. Works well and it’s a lot quicker and easier. I just had a problem with the pad sliding off. Mine is getting old. Fixed that with a piece of sandpaper slid under the edges of the pad holders. Worked great.

    • @TheHomeownersCookbook

      I’m not sure how it will do on textured walls, but unfortunately you’d probably have similar issues regardless of your edging/cut-in method. For the price though, can’t beat saving a little time cutting in around windows, door jams, etc. the only time I’ve run into issues is on thinner baseboard or crown molding where the lip isn’t thick enough to run the edger up against.

    Use your brush to load the pad brushing off the edge. Don’t dip it. You need a brush anyway to get the inside corners. Don’t try to go too far with a load or it will apply too thinly. I use the tilted front edge to swipe down the ridge that tends to squeeze out of the back edge especially if rolling the field is lagging behind.

    The better way is to paint in a U shape every time you touch the wall. I'm only painting that way for 10 years now and it always done real good job. Try it! Easy and fast!
    Let me explain:
    1. Dip the Shure-line pad just a little down the tray;
    2. Rub the edge of the tray to remove excess (this will produce uniformity to the pad);
    3. Do not apply paint directly to the border;
    4. Instead, apply further from the border;
    5. Slide to the curb and slide 4 feet along it.
    6. To remove the pad, slide away from the edge.
    This results in a U shape, where application and removal is done away from the edge. This prevents staining from application/removal.
    Have a easy and fast outline painting!

    ABSOLUTELY L O V E THIS LITTLE GIZMO! Just make sure that you clean it immediately after you are done, or drop it in a bucket of soapy water. So very easy!
    I do NOT dip it, I dip a brush in the paint and then spread like that over the edger; more control. Also if you feel you are not close enough to the edge - right after you use it, cut it a little higher with a brush. Terrific little tool. Just keep the rollers clean!!!

    I see that you're using the pads sometimes badly. Surely you do a good job, but with the pads you have the wrong technique. That said without taking anything away from your good work.
    Here's how to use the pads properly. Painting by making an inverted U. Let me explain.
    FOR A WALL ADJACENT TO A CEILING:
    1. Before going against the border, apply the pad on the wall far from the border, then slide it towards the border. It will make an inverted L..
    2. Glide the pad evenly with even pressure, you can go either way.
    3. To remove the pad, slide it down. This will complete the inverted U. Remove by sliding and not directly as you do, because it produces peaks!!!
    TO SOAK PAINT WITH PAINT:
    Just immerse the hairs and rub the pad on the edge of the tray, it removes the excess and evens out the paint on the pad.
    TO REMOVE EXCESS PAINT ON CASTERS:
    Before repeating steps 1 to 3, rub the small rollers on a wall to be painted. It's a good precaution, because sometimes they get dirty. Wipe this part of the wall.
    Repeat steps 1 to 3 carefully. I am able to paint a very far wall with pads that fit long sleeves!
    FOR CORNERS (junction of 2 walls and a ceiling):
    We have no choice but to use the brush, which is the only one going into the nooks and crannies.
    FOR ADJACENT WALLS PAINTED THE SAME COLOUR:
    Use a roller with one end "closed" completely hairy.
    Never again will I make borders with a brush, it's too long and risky.
