    It'd be cool if you could do a breakdown in your "About" section on the main points of the video. For example, in this video you could mention the Step 1, 2, 3 exams as the first thing you do to prepare for a US residency. Since the video is 14 minutes, but I want to reference it later for some specific information, the written breakdown would be really helpful. Thanks for making these videos! It's great to get some insight from actual people in the game.

    Hey, great video. One thing to note about visiting rotations is that they cannot be done before your final year of medical school. I'm a med student graduating a little late in order to fit them in because you can't do them before and like Dr Vaidya mentioned they cannot be done after graduating. For those considering doing medical school abroad, as a Canadian who went abroad I wouldn't recommend it if it is not your only option. A lot of the time the curriculum does not prepare you for the steps (and canadian equivalents) among other things. Worst of all you eliminate yourself from more competitive specialities. If it is your only option go for it, otherwise try to get into a med or do school at home. If anyone considering going abroad for med school has questions, feel free to send me a message.

    Hello Andrea,
    Thank you so much for this video. It has helped me greatly.
    I am currently a medical student in Zambia, Africa, and I intend to write my step 1 this coming September and InshaAllah ultimately do my residency in the United States. That tip on doing visiting rotations while you're a student was great, thank you Dr Vaidya.
    My question is what role does taking part in medical researches in the United States play on your chances to match. Is it as important as doing visiting rotations?
    Thank you

    He should be honest. With MBBS degree in India - you are not really ready to go. You are just as ready to go as a newly licensed MD is at the end of PGY1. In India - there are post graduate training programs for MD and MS - for medicine and surgery respectively.

    Andrea, congrats and thank you for your initiative. I'm an IMG, already practicing as an anesthesiologist for 8 years after a 3 years residency, but I'm willing to begin it all over in US. I've noticed that some residency programs have spots for physicians, apart from the "regular" spots. Do you know if this means that those with previous medical experience (both IMGs and US trained) can only apply to those special spots or could we apply for both categories?

    Hello Dr. Tooley and Dr. Vaidya, thank you guys so much for this video, it was really helpful in clearing up some of the confusion I had about applying for med school in the US. I'm a 2nd year Medical student in Turkey from Nigeria (I know, it's a little confusing :)) I just wanted to know what year you'd consider the best year to do these visiting rotations (Turkey's medical school program is 6 years: 3 years theory, 3 years clinical). And I also wanted to find out how long these visiting rotations last and if they can be done in the summer. Thanks! Have a great day!

    Hello Dr. Tooley,
    Thank you for all the information.
    I am in my Rotatory internship year in India and have only 2 more months till I graduate. As I couldn't find a proper visiting student program, I have decided to take up an observership program instead. Will this affect my match?
    Should I just take a break from the internship and search and into a visiting student program!?
    Why is that observership considered inferior to Externship/Clerkship!?

    • @vanhoot2234
      @vanhoot2234 8 лет назад

      Because observership is exactly that. You are observing. You are limited to what you can do because you aren't insured as a medical student. Basically you sit yourself in a corner and watch and ask questions. (think of shadowing) Clerkship means your doing rotations.

    Thanks alot Andrea! thats what i've been wondering and sending e-mails to u about..i rly appreciate what u r doing!
    so i have few questions but before that i'd tell u about the medical school am in....we dun have pre-med , my medical school is 7 years 3 academic, 3 clinical, 1practical called "general doctor" and after finishing this year we r officially doctors but if we need to practise we still need like 4-5 year working in hospitals the same as "Residency" so , First, i cant get a letter of recommendation while am at the medical school for sum reasons so here are the questions:
    1-if i didnt get this recommendation letter, would it be like VERY hard to become resident in US?
    2-if i graduated and worked for like 3-4 years in an arabian country to afford the expenses of the USMLE would i be qualified as a resident or as an actual physician?
    3-MD is of any benefit for becoming a resident in the US or its not required?
    4-after finishing USMLE steps and passing and upon applying for residency u become a resident or u take time "months" training?
    Thanks again for everything Andrea! i rly dunno how to thank u but all i know that nobody here helped me like u did : inpiration, motivation, leading us to the right path & ur tips for studying !!

    Whats the difference between an away rotation and a clinical elective?

    • @vanhoot2234
      @vanhoot2234 8 лет назад

      nothing. You have to do clinical cores + clinical electives. Your cores include things like general surgery, family medicine, internal medicine, OBGYN, PSYCH,... and a few more that I am probably missing. After your cores you have to finish off your rotations by getting elective rotations in your 4th year. Your elective rotations are typically the ones where you go where ever you want and learn more specific training. For example instead of just being interested in surgery you may be interested in facial plastics or ophthalmology. During this time you can choose to do the rotations away from your primary school. That is why it is called away rotations. You typically do your away rotations for your electives.
      You have to set them up on your own if you want to specific ones. Observerships are also useful but you will be best served doing those DURING school so that they don't count towards your clerkship/clinical rotations but you still get the chance to be a part of those programs.

    I have a question for Dr. Vaidya. I am a med student from India. How do you think the chances for fresh IMG's differ from say someone who graduated 2-3 years ago ? Because I have heard many programs prefer fresh graduates. I hope you'll answer.
