It'd be cool if you could do a breakdown in your "About" section on the main points of the video. For example, in this video you could mention the Step 1, 2, 3 exams as the first thing you do to prepare for a US residency. Since the video is 14 minutes, but I want to reference it later for some specific information, the written breakdown would be really helpful. Thanks for making these videos! It's great to get some insight from actual people in the game.
Thank You So much Andrea :) For doing this video with dr. Vaidya. I really liked hearing about his cardiology career in his previous video and I was quite curious about how he went about it. So thanks.
Stumbled upon this video and thank you so much for sharing this info. I am a medical student in Costa Rica on my last year actually and I am so interested in pursuing a residency training in America! Very useful information
Very interesting. I had no idea it was that different. Your videos are great, and even helpful for NP students like me. I will be working very closely with MD's and good info to know!
Hey, great video. One thing to note about visiting rotations is that they cannot be done before your final year of medical school. I'm a med student graduating a little late in order to fit them in because you can't do them before and like Dr Vaidya mentioned they cannot be done after graduating. For those considering doing medical school abroad, as a Canadian who went abroad I wouldn't recommend it if it is not your only option. A lot of the time the curriculum does not prepare you for the steps (and canadian equivalents) among other things. Worst of all you eliminate yourself from more competitive specialities. If it is your only option go for it, otherwise try to get into a med or do school at home. If anyone considering going abroad for med school has questions, feel free to send me a message.
On a side note, Andrea you're awesome! I love your blog and RUclips posts. I know it must be hard with residency to keep up but you're really helping a lot of people 😊
Thank you so so much for this video, I've been waiting for this! :) My question is that is the syllabus of your medical college in India enough to prepare for USMLE or do you've to rely on other sources for preparation? What states are favorable to IMGs? Also if you can explain more about Observership Program?
Hello Andrea, Thank you so much for this video. It has helped me greatly. I am currently a medical student in Zambia, Africa, and I intend to write my step 1 this coming September and InshaAllah ultimately do my residency in the United States. That tip on doing visiting rotations while you're a student was great, thank you Dr Vaidya. My question is what role does taking part in medical researches in the United States play on your chances to match. Is it as important as doing visiting rotations? Thank you
He should be honest. With MBBS degree in India - you are not really ready to go. You are just as ready to go as a newly licensed MD is at the end of PGY1. In India - there are post graduate training programs for MD and MS - for medicine and surgery respectively.
amazing video! thank you so much for this, the information are really helpful :) Could you perhaps do a video on a career in surgery specialties (the requirements, residency, lifestyle, etc.) ? Thank you so much for all the videos- they are awesome :)
Hello Dr. Tooley and Vaidya, I just looked up visiting student rotations, but can't seem to any for international medical students. Is there a specific site that lists schools who accept internationals? Thank you!
Watching this purely for curiosity's sake because I meet so many physicians from abroad that are already in the U.S. or plan to relocate to practice there
This video is so Helpful. Thank you So Much.It would be very helpful, If you could do a follow up video about differences between the Student away rotations and Observership and how to apply for these.
It would be really helpful if, more details about how and when exactly Dr.Vaithya gave step 1 and went to us for electives during his internship year, was explained.I would like to know whether if he took a study break for step 1 during internship for some time and got internship extended or not. Deep appreciation for all the video blogs andrea tooley, thank you :)
Hey Andrea, your videos are very informative. I appreciate your hardwork to help International med students and graduates regarding getting into residency programs in US. well i have a question, how can a International med student can get into a away rotation in US? what is the procedure for that?how to apply? It would be a great help if u could make a video about a international med students getting into away rotations specifically making a video with a IMG who already got into US programs just like this video.
thanks for this video Andrea. im in my last year of med school and im planning going next year to give my best shot to match. hope you are good. p.d. im from Guatemala.
also, by visiting student rotations, with the information i'm seeing shows that american students in an american med school can go to another med school in the country to do a rotation. didn't know this before and wonder why the student doesn't just do all the rotations at his/her home school.
Andrea, congrats and thank you for your initiative. I'm an IMG, already practicing as an anesthesiologist for 8 years after a 3 years residency, but I'm willing to begin it all over in US. I've noticed that some residency programs have spots for physicians, apart from the "regular" spots. Do you know if this means that those with previous medical experience (both IMGs and US trained) can only apply to those special spots or could we apply for both categories?
You applied for a visiting rotations while doing your internship? Where you not already considered a medical graduate? Could you please expantiate on that. Thanks
Please do a video about ranking residency programs and that entire process. I am a Premed but I would love the information, also my brother is about to go through the process, so I can refer him to you.
Hello Dr. Tooley and Dr. Vaidya, thank you guys so much for this video, it was really helpful in clearing up some of the confusion I had about applying for med school in the US. I'm a 2nd year Medical student in Turkey from Nigeria (I know, it's a little confusing :)) I just wanted to know what year you'd consider the best year to do these visiting rotations (Turkey's medical school program is 6 years: 3 years theory, 3 years clinical). And I also wanted to find out how long these visiting rotations last and if they can be done in the summer. Thanks! Have a great day!
Dr Andrea, First of all, I applause your effort in helping FMG's. I'm Dr.Anil, Indian, Graduated from China. I have a query, what If someone has 2 years or more duration between graduation and residency application? how does it effect the chances of interviews and do aiming for high scores in Steps compensate those odds? Thank you.
Hey, Dr. Vaibya! My question is that did the medical school in India prepared you for the foreign board exams like step 1 and 2? I moved to the U.S. 5 years ago and I was planning on going to India to do my medical school to speed up the process and come to US for residency, is that a good idea? Thanks for all the information. I appreciate it.
Great stuff! Thankyou so much for this video.. Dr Vaidya I would like to ask that did you do your rotation as an elective student or as an observer? Does being an intern in India still count as "being in med school"?
Hello Dr. Tooley, I have graduated my residency of internal medicine in Laos. For now I want to study Cardiology fellowship in the US. Therefore, how could I do?. I am very appreciate to see your comments, thanks

Good day Dr.Tooley and Dr.Vaidya I am currently a second year medical student from South Africa (Stellenbosch University) , and I am thinking of writing step 1,2,3 before I complete my degree. I am planning to hopefully join a residency program in the United States. My idea is to write step 1 next year. When would you say should you write step 2/3? I am also quite interested in Radiology, do you have any more advice as to where you should start? Where can I get more information about step 2/step3? Where would you recommend to apply for visiting rotations if you are interested in fields such as Radiology?
Hello Dr. Tooley, Thank you for all the information. I am in my Rotatory internship year in India and have only 2 more months till I graduate. As I couldn't find a proper visiting student program, I have decided to take up an observership program instead. Will this affect my match? Should I just take a break from the internship and search and into a visiting student program!? Why is that observership considered inferior to Externship/Clerkship!?
Because observership is exactly that. You are observing. You are limited to what you can do because you aren't insured as a medical student. Basically you sit yourself in a corner and watch and ask questions. (think of shadowing) Clerkship means your doing rotations.

nothing. You have to do clinical cores + clinical electives. Your cores include things like general surgery, family medicine, internal medicine, OBGYN, PSYCH,... and a few more that I am probably missing. After your cores you have to finish off your rotations by getting elective rotations in your 4th year. Your elective rotations are typically the ones where you go where ever you want and learn more specific training. For example instead of just being interested in surgery you may be interested in facial plastics or ophthalmology. During this time you can choose to do the rotations away from your primary school. That is why it is called away rotations. You typically do your away rotations for your electives. You have to set them up on your own if you want to specific ones. Observerships are also useful but you will be best served doing those DURING school so that they don't count towards your clerkship/clinical rotations but you still get the chance to be a part of those programs.
hey Andrea do you have info on students who might have completed their undergrad in their countries but would love to study med scholl in the states as international students?,
Thank you so much for this video, It is very useful. I have a doubt I'm Indian but i'm pursuing my medical graduation in Ukraine, so can i know more information about Away / Visiting rotation like , what is the procedure and which hospital is good one?
I have a question for Dr. Vaidya. I am a med student from India. How do you think the chances for fresh IMG's differ from say someone who graduated 2-3 years ago ? Because I have heard many programs prefer fresh graduates. I hope you'll answer.
Hello dr.vaibhav M an indian med student from ucms Q- is it possible for an img to bag int med and neurology residency in mayo ? Coz most of my seniors told me that mayo don't even call imgs for interview!!
