I think it should be far less than 50%. If the average occupancy of a property is 4, then a single person should only have to pay a quarter or 25% of it. I pay £272 already making this my largest single monthly household cost already. It’s an unfair system that penalises those living alone.

As a single person that owns a band B house, and pays the 75% council tax, it’s obvious that those in families of 4 or 5 will usually live in higher band ones. Someone who is well off enough to live alone in a large house could lose a fair bit if the 25% discount was abolished though. No doubt there are such people, like elderly pensioners who own one that used to be their family house years ago, though. A large slice of their assets could well be in property in that case.

"Lots of single people are pensioners".
Aren't a large majority of pensioners single people?
When I think of all the pensioners I know, most have been widowed, divorced (and stayed single) or just choose to love alone for various reasons.
Sheltered housing which is designed for 55+ (pre pension age) assumes people live alone and not as a couple and those who are a couple like those in my family have to wait years for a flat big enough for a couple in sheltered housing as a result of this assumption that 55+ are single people who wish to remain so.
Staying single can't be further penalised by a change in Council Tax to them as well as younger people who are a different variety of reasons are living alone, some of which are for their health and wellbeing!

Oh pipe down! Stop being so melodramatic. I'm no fan of Starmer & Co but it's clear as day that they're nowhere near as dreadful as the gang of crooks that have been wrecking this country for so many years. The worst anyone has to say about this government so far is the cutting of winter fuel payments (the Tories did stuff like that all the time) and the acceptance of expensive gifts (again the Tories did this loads. Bojo was much worse). What's the other oh-so-terrible things that you think he should be stepping down over? They've only been in power for a couple of months FFS, and they've already sorted things out that the Tories spent years doing fuck all about, such as ending some of the strike action by giving workers proper pay rises. But of course all the Tory-lovers are even moaning about that too now, trying to spin it as a negative thing. They've started processing asylum claims properly as well, which the Tories stopped doing on purpose to create a massive backlog of unprocessed claims. They deliberately sabotaged our asylum system, and now Labour have got it up and running again to start doing the MASSIVE amount of work needed to get those numbers down, and you think he should step down? LMAO! You will complain about Labour no matter what they do. Plonker.

But how can any pensioner predict the withdrawal of such support at such short notice because we don’t stand a chance of making adjustments? If the discount for Council Tax is cancelled then I will have to give up. That is something I have not calculated for in my control of my finances and I just cannot imagine how I would cope having made so many drastic sacrifices. I think it should be pointed out that Councils are the bodies that set the Council Tax which created part of the Council income. A number of councils have been badgering the Govt to get rid of the 25% single person benefit and so increase their income or as in many cases reduce their massive debt. Although Councils set the Council Tax only the Govt can allow Councils to get rid of the 25% reduction for single occupants. If the 25% is scrapped the Govt will not see a penny of it,it will go into the Council coffers. It is utterly incompetent Councils, such as Nottingham and Birmingham, who are creating this problem.

A good chunk of council budgets are covered by central government grants. The proportions of homes in Council Tax bands will make some difference, but the biggest difference to incomes councils can raise locally is business rates.

Fell over at the beginning of the year and broke my glasses cost £250 to replace so that was 4 months with no private pension. Starmer has stopped my £200 winter heating allowance. So wrong, so unfair. The system rewards and punishes the wrong people. Work hard, pay tax, contribute, be responsible, independent and prudent, save and later in life get hammered and rejected. On the other had blow the lot and then get given everything. No incentive. They take off one and give to the other. We pay tax on income, everything we spend, our savings and then your death. Inheritance tax is a tax on everything left over from paying tax all your life. They make us pay 20% vat on the tax they add as fuel duty. Tax on top of tax. Most People are not aware. My lifetime accumulated wealth is my kids future to pay their student loans off and afford a house and afford to live. Labour think 52% of it is theirs. It f******g isn’t. They won’t get a penny of it. I will do whatever it takes. Blow it, bury it or leave the country. I don’t want to do any of that, but I feel I have to. The problem is within a few years, we will be a cashless society, AI will monitor everything thing we have, spend and do. Our money and wealth will be in plain view, auto taxed and we will basically have a social credit system. They will legislate a system, Step out of line, be criminalised and your fines will be deducted at source. I don’t want or need much, just be free and left alone and keep what is mine, what I have worked for, risks taken and earned. I am an ordinary person, not extreme but I have slowly come to despise the government, mistrust authorities and consider them my most hated enemy. Reading the comments, many feel the same. I did not like the Tories either, but this lot make me sick. I’m so angry. I have friends who voted for this lot. Idiots, I told them what these communists would be like and they were too stupid to understand. Now they will suffer. I’m struggling to have anything to do with them. Remove my £300 heating allowance and I am down to an increase of £68. Remove the single person council tax discount and I am already several hundred pounds worse off.
Inflation is also way above the official government figures. My car insurance doubled this year, my house Insurance went up about 30%, Gas electricity and water bills will go up. Food prices are rising much more than the 2.2% official figures and then you have shrinkflation on top of that even in shops like Aldi and Lidl. That is without the October budget rises. 2025 is going to be a very hard year. I worked from age 17 to age 70, now aged 77.

It will affect me and many of my friends on very low incomes. If the council reduced the allowance to 20% instead of 25% off, it wouldn't be such a massive blow to single households , rather than taking all of it off in one go!

This country has always suffered from the politics of envy. People who work hard and achieve something that they wanted at the time are seen at the end of that pathway somehow as though “they got lucky” or “they must have fiddled their way there”. Modern day governments stoke this form of envy up also. They see a house and believe the occupiers “have money” whereas the opposite is true. The house may (or may not) be worth something, but the occupiers are likely broke. They have very little ready money, precisely because most of it goes to servicing the property. This scenario also plays out for many living on their own in rented accommodation. When someone is left without their other supporting loved one, or have struggled alone for many years, why are they penalised? What sort of society does that? Only one that cares little. It wasn’t long ago that people with second and third homes got a second / third home discount on the tax? Government has ceased to make any sense, and acts moronic as long as it can feed itself. It has ceased to look after its own people and I truly believe we are reaching a time when we have had enough and the ‘system’ will be pulled down unless it reforms itself into removing the lying, cheating and fraudulent corruption it has become whilst ever seeking ordinary folk pay excessively for their excesses.

Scrapping this would put my bill up by £560 a year. I get nothing but a bin empty for what I pay now. This will be the “poll tax” moment for labour. If this is an aim phase it out over 5 years. To remove it immediately is suicidal for this government.
