Note: I totally mis-spoke in this video. You don't need to have a college degree to qualify for and get a job as an Associate Governmental Program Analyst (AGPA). You simply need some combination of education (4 years) and experience (3 years). AND, experience can be substituted (year for year) for education. So, for one example, you could have 2 years of education (about 60 semester or 90 quarter hours) and 5 years experience and still qualify. And so on and so forth. Too many possible combinations of education and experience to name. I hope this clears this point up and is helpful! Coach Kent - out! ;-) Reply
@@calistatejobcoach I am going to gradatue in june with a bachelors, if i did the test right now to look for jobs in june. Would my education count as 4 years of experience? specialfly for the questions that ask if i have 3 or more years of experience in wokrinf on projects. or is that only work related stuff.
@@Pabloguerrero711 You should take credit for 4 years of education (which is a separate topic on the exam) plus experience gained in skill or knowledge areas directly related to the skill or knowledge area in question on the assessment. Example, you have 1 year of experience gained in a skill area via projects during your educational coursework, you take credit for that. Etc. Important note: College graduates automatically qualify for the Staff Services Analyst classification at the advanced Range C level. Hope this helps!
Thank you, coach; this information is very helpful. Could you please let me know if there is a written exam (not online) that follows this online exam?
I just received a call on an application from April 2024 and I watched this before I took the exam so it was simply about my training and education which was easy and I passed. Thank you for the videos. I have a interview coming up next week.
@Marysunnn This particular interview went well, after the panel interview I waited 30 days and received a email that they were no longer hiring. I later in late June received another interview offer, interviewed in Julbacjob referrences were called the end of July. I received a request for background check and fingerprint in August and received a job offer in September and I started work Oct 1, 2024. I have been on the job for a month and I love all the management and coworkers.
@@Aletheia.Admin.ScienceI did not have another exam for this job but they did not hire anyone. I interviewed for another and was hired, no other exams for EDD position. I have been working for a month now and I am very happy with my office. Best decision ever because other places seem to treat me as if I was over qualified and too old at 62 years old. But the state embrace the long history of public service and education and knowledge. My age never felt like a issue so applying to the State has been a awesome and very encouraging. I am happy. I retired and have pension and 100% medical so I don't need medical so I get Coben payment each month.
The 1-on-1 coaching I did with Coach Kent helped me immensely with all of the following: 1. The pros and cons of accepting my first position with the State of California at a lower level, 2. The culture within the State of accepting jobs but continuing to apply for higher level jobs, 3. The “best practices” around completing the Statements of Qualifications (SOQs) required for the better jobs, 4. Pros and cons of accepting jobs not within my preferred geographical location I am grateful for Coach Kent and all the expertise he was able to offer me. 🙏
Thank you so much for showing what the exam entails - I have delayed taking the exam due to concerns/anxiety with what sort of questions/content the exam addressed (Ex: math, reading comprehension, etc). I am pleasantly surprised to see it is simply a self-graded assessment.
Leisa Crownpoint, very excited for you. I know an Office Tech who recently promoted to Staff Services Analyst. It can happen for you too!! Coach Kent - out!
Can't even begin to tell you how much I appreciate this series. I tend to get confused when feeling overloaded by information, the state did a great job overloading me with information(lots of ways to get to the same info). Your video series helped me make sense of it and gave me the confidence to take the AGPA, which I did and matched your score. Thank you Kent, your work has/is made/making a difference!
Thank you so much for this video. I was very apprehensive to take the exams but you have gave me the confidence to take them and start applying. I know realize I am pretty qualified and was nervous for no reason. :) You have gained a subscriber. :)
Chela Gonzalez, glad to hear I helped inspire you. Keep in mind I applied for about 40 jobs to get about 4 or 5 interviews, and 2 good job offers. It's somewhat of a numbers game. Apply until you get an acceptable job offer and take it. Once you're a State employee, you can apply for other State jobs and it's sometimes easier to get another State job once you're already "inside". Don't stop applying after 3, 4, or 5 applications with no interview offers. Keep applying! The old saying "Quiters never win and winners never quit" is absolutely true and applicable in this case. You are not a quitter! :-)
@@a.a.9721 , thank you for the good question. I'm sure other folks were thinking similarly to you! That said, the SOQ is probably the most important part of this multi-step process. Even more important than the exam.! Rationale: Lots of folks take and pass the requisite exams. Many fewer folks take the time to fillout/complete what is normally a 1 or 2 page Statement of Qualifications (SOQ). As an ex-Hiring Manager, I can say that this filters out those folks unwilling to put forth the effort (or take the extra step) to complete the SOQ. Moreover, it's also a great chance to prove: 1. The SOQ is often stated in the advertisement as taking the place of (or acting the same as) the first level interview. I hope this helps.
Coach Kent, have you considered making a short video where you talk about a few qualifiers that open the door for a large variety of state jobs? Such as having a BA/BS opens the door for a variety of (unexpected) positions, or maybe theres a skill set or experience level that is sought after in a multitude of openings? I struggle with selling myself, I don't want to come across as arrogant, any thoughts you have about this could help your subscribers. I think this is not an uncommon problem especially for introverts. What about presenting yourself in an appealing way when writing a cover letter, resume, SOQ etc .. when trying to switch to a new type of job, like someone is a reliable good employee they possess the skill as required but no job experience that makes them ideal? I've driven Class A tanker trucks seasonally but its dangerous on the fire lines & I'm just out of place in the world of trucking. I'm educated & have crazy technology skills, I want to put these things to work. Thank you for sharing your time & wisdom. As soon as I'm hired somewhere I'll but you 10 cups of coffee!
Excellent video, Kent. I just took the Program Tech II exam and passed with a high score. Your videos help to demystify the State application. Subscribed!
Great Video!!! We took the exam. Thank You Kent I was scared and didn't know what to expect I was thinking this was something I needed to study for but this is pretty basic.
Thank you so much. I am just beginner at searching and applying for state jobs. I was struggling to find where to find the link to complete the exam. You made it very simple. Thank you. Please keep up your great work.
The video was helpful! They now require you take an exam with arithmetic, and writing/reading comprehension. Do you have any resources on studying for this? Thank you again!
I think you're mixing up the new Staff Services Analyst exam with the Associate Governmental Program Analyst (AGPA) exam. As per multiple of my coaching clients, the AGPA exam is still the same. As far as writing/reading comprehension go though, I highly recommend a remedial English class at one of the fine, local community colleges we are lucky to have in California. Hope this helps! ;-)
Thank you so much for sharing all of this great information. After watching each video today, I submitted my first application. I will work on another one later tonight. I also saved a template as suggested for continued use. I just have to work on perfecting my search criteria. I am going to submit as many applications as possible once I get those steps down. We will see what happens.
Delano Vasquez, you're most welcome and congrats on getting started so quickly. It's "a numbers game" and the more applications you submit the greater your chances of being interviewed and getting an offer. You're off to a great start! Coach Kent
Read the Study Guide if one is offered. If the exam is an online exam, you might be able to do a "test run" by going all the way to the end of the exam and then quiting before actually submitting the exam to be scored. If you watched my Take the Exam video, I showed how this is done using the AGPA as an example. Hope this helps! ;-)
I believe I wouldn't have a problem qualifying for a state job. However what worries me is the reference checks. I don't particularly want my job to know I'm looking for a job. I can get a reference letter without anyone knowing. I have worked having a union construction job for 4 years. Before that, I worked in restaurants for 25 years. Most restaurants aren't going to remember me. Some aren't even there. In the past I would save a managers personal number. Put that on an application, knowing it probably wouldn't get called. In between construction and restaurants I had job offers, one of them in particular shot me down do to references not being verified. It was a very in depth background and reference check. I was even asked for W2's. How in depth is a reference check? I know it depends on the department and position. But I am trying a career change. I don't want to get shot down for reference checks, and future opportunities.
Thank you, coach; this information is very helpful. Could you please let me know if there is a written exam (not online) that follows this online exam?

Wow that whole exam was about length of experience and type of knowledge/experience and no technical questions about actual tasks that would be performed on the job. Is this how all Cal State job exams are structured? I'm going to apply to IT positions and worry about actual technical questions. I've applied to the county in my local area and technical questions were asked.
In my experience, this is representative of most of the State's online exams. I took some of the IT exams as I was considering trying to move over to that domain, and they were similar. Please come back here with an update (good, bad, different) if you do wind up taking some of the IT exams. Thanks for the interaction too! ;-)
@@calistatejobcoach I just took the exam for the IT Associate position I'm applying for and it consisted of ALL technical questions and not a single self assessment question. It was quite tough and I have over 10 years of real hands on, breaking sweat IT work experience and a BS in Information systems. I encourage anyone taking it to brush up on your college courses and take sample exams online. Not really too many practical questions pertaining to what an IT person would actually DO on the job but really a lot of conceptual stuff. Even with my experience and education, I only managed to get an 85%.
Hi, Thank you for all the wonderful information. I have a question, why are lower paying jobs require harder test. I don’t qualify for the AGAP positions, but I qualify for the Staff service analysts. It’s less money and it requires math, writing, and reading. I also noticed that for the other lower positions, it’s also requiring more than just answering questions about yourself/experience. Thank you
That's a good question and since I'm not an HR professional at the State, nor was I part of the team (I assume it was a team) that created the SSA exam, I can only make an educated guess at the answer to your question. That said, my guess is that the AGPA classification and exam lean much more heavily on actual work experience that can easily be assessed on the current AGPA exam. An in your experience you think that's easy. The SSA classification and exam lean more heavily on education and, apparently the exam creators felt compelled to test that education via math, writing, reading assessments on the SSA exam. For me, I would have thought those assessments very easy. Apparently you didn't. As I said, that's just my guess. Hope this helps! I have coaching clients who have passed the new SSA exam and gotten jobs as SSAs so it is obtainable. Good luck in your pursuit.
@@calistatejobcoach Thank you, I definitely need to look continue to look for practice exams. They are hard for me. Have a great day and once again, thank you for all this wonderful information
why is my exam that I took and passed not displaying in the Exam section of My account screen? How do I get the practice exams/ guides to apply for Information technology postings? Could you please help
Passed exams don't show immediately in your CalCareers account. Because there's a system refresh involved, it usually take between 12 and 24 hours for it to show. As long as you got the system message that you passed, that is what matters most. You can then say that you are "list eligible" in any associated job application. Some classifications have exam guides and some don't. You have to read through the exam/assessment info for each interested classifcation to see what's available. Hope this helps! If you want/need coaching - send an email to kentdills@yahoo.com. ;-)
hi Kent, thank you for the informative video. Do I need to evaluate my foreign degree or can I apply without doing that? (the semesters and credit hours for my degree follow the same system as in the US)
I'm going to give both a short and long answer. The short answer: You can take classification exams and do interviews but you WILL need to have your foreign education evaluated before you can be appointed/hired. The long answer: Copied/sourced from a current (and accurate) Job Posting. "Possession of Minimum Qualifications (MQ) will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If you are meeting MQ’s with education, you must include your unofficial transcripts/diploma for verification. Applicants who completed their education outside of the US (with foreign degrees/transcripts) must obtain and submit verification of U.S. course/degree equivalency. Foreign education credential evaluation services can be found at NACES | National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. Official transcripts may be required upon appointment. If it is determined an applicant does not meet the MQ’s, the candidate will be withheld from the eligibility list, rendering them inactive and ineligible to be hired for the position. Candidates who have been withheld may file an appeal with the State Personnel Board." Hope this helps! Good luck in your effort!
Rashmi Jaim, appreciate the positive feedback. Much appreciated! I don't have a sample exam for IT associates but I took the exams for IT associates, staffers, and supervisors a couple years ago and they are very similar to the training and experience format used for the AGPA exam. If you follow this video, you shouldn't have any trouble. Best of luck. Coach Kent - out! ;-)
Thanks for the video.I don't see ant exam questions in this video like math/analytic questions how score is 95 % sorry if i miss something ?for Staff selection associate exam it will be video proctor exam or we need to go to test center?
Thank you so much for making this video Kent, it's super helpful for those of us that are trying to figure all this out as newcomers. I have 1 question for you - does the actual score count or is it fine as long as it's passing? If you could some light, that would be great:)
Caroline Hanna, thanks for the positive feedback. Folks like you are the reason I created this channel and the videos. About the exam score, the exact number/score is only important to the extent that the exam taker winds up in the top 3 ranks of all exam takers. Being in the top 3 ranks means you are "reachable" and therefore eligible for the particular classification you took the exam for and for the related job opening you are applying for. As a hiring manager, I never cared what exam score or rank applicants applying for my openings were in as long as they were in the top 3 ranks. Further, for all the exams I took, an exam score of 95 put me in the top rank. But that fact never came into play - as far as I know - only that I was in the top 3 ranks. I hope this is clear and makes sense. Each step along this path to a State job can be somewhat confusing and complicated. If you'd like some 1-on-1 coaching, send me an email (kentdills@yahoo.com). Coach Kent - out! ;-)
I am about to apply for the Principal Data Architect (IT Manager II) and has written my SOQ, I am wondering if you can help me take a look at it? This is my first time applying for State Job, it was confusing at first but your video help boost my confidence :) Thank you
Do they ask you technical questions for IT positions? I'm also applying for IT and wonder if the exam is structured similar to the one in this video. No questions regarding the actual job was asked here.
Morning 🙏 Im LEAP and VET Ive passed exams and getting a-lot of Contact Letters. Writing some general SOQ’s to tweak for each application…but wondering if I’m missing anything valuable. Thanks!
Dumpsterfire, you can do it! Really, writing up a good SOQ is one of the most important parts of submitting an application so that you will be picked for an interview. Read the SOQ directions carefully and address each and every point listed. EVery SOQ is unique and you'll have to do this for each application that requires an SOQ. This is what separates the contenders from the pretenders! ;-)
Hi Kent, I have a question. How do I go about communicating the three years of required experience? For example, in college I ran my own window cleaning business for 2 years which by necessity included budgeting and personnel management, and then in my current position I do many of the tasks that are required for mandatory experience. How would I communicate that experience to the State of California when they ask for proof?
Here's a question: Let's say that someone has taken the "Information Technology Specialist II" exam, and passed. Later on I find an appealing job listing, but it is listed as "Information Technology Specialist I" classification. Do I need to take that exam as well, despite the fact that I have already passed the higher level exam?
Hi Kent. I'm applying for an IT position but the job posting doesn't mention anything about requiring an exam and doesn't provide a link to it. Do I simply search for the job and take the exam from there as you stated here? I did search for it and noticed it is an open/continuous exam. I know you stated here to take the exam after applying but when do I need to take the exam by since the exam itself has no final filing date?
Take any all exams as soon as possible (before applying and interviewing if possible). You must take the exam before a Hirng Manager asks his/her HR department to check/run your Minimum Qualifications (after the interview but prior to making a job offer). This could happen a week, two, three after an interview. Hope this helps.
Hi Kent, Is there a list of all the exams and what their requirements are? Example, I did a trade school and received a diploma in "Computerized Office Administration". I've been in the construction industry for 30 years. Trying to finish my career in CAL Jobs
This was very helpful. Any advise for recent grads with little to no experience? What about work experience gained through non-related work positions? I hope to take the exam for environmental scientist (entry), but worried I may have too many 'no experience' or '0-6mo' questions answered, even for entry level. Thanks!
Not sure what the requirements are as far as experience versus education for environmental scientist. You may have to just take the exam and see if you pass or not. That said, experience gained through non-related work positions, school projects, volunteer work (e.g., church work, etc.) all counts. Please take all those other methods of gaining experience into account when completing the exam. Worst case, you have to apply for more general Staff Services Analyst positions that can be qualified for based on a 4 year college degree only. Good luck in your efforts! Coach Kent - out!! ;-)
@@calistatejobcoach Thank you so much for the feedback. Non-related work experience is something I'm always unsure whether or not to include under my skills and work experience. Thank you!
Do all state jobs require a exam? I have seen a few that say something along the lines of "if you're using education/experience to qualify during the screening process..." I was confused whether I needed to also complete the exam or not.
To simplify things (leaving out some rare exceptions) - yes, most if not all jobs require an exam. The exams are based on a combination of education and experience qualifications. For example, for Associate Governmental Program Analyst (AGPA), you need some combination of education/experience totaling 7 years. Can be 4 years of education with 3 years experience which is a very frequent scenario. Could also be 7 years experience with no education; or 7 years education with no experience. If using education as any part of the qualification, then you need to be able to provide proof of the education; usually in the form of college transcripts. Hope this is clear and that it helps! Good luck in your pursuit!! ;-)
Hi, I am having a hard time finding an exam for any of the following: GRaphic DEsigner I, II, II. Can you advise where a link is for me to take it? Thanks!
1. Link to search for all exams: www.calcareers.ca.gov/CalHRPublic/Search/ExamSearch.aspx 2. Type in exam you're interested in (e.g., Graphic Designer I, II, or III. 3. Click "Search". Hope this helps. This is just another example of how the State of California has a somewhat "clunky" and hard to navigate their hiring process. I'm here to help! Good luck! ;-)
@calistatejobcoach It seems that each job post handles this differently I found. Some position consider the STD.678 as the Exam/application form and will accept online submissions. Other job posts get directed to CalTrans(?), where you can download the Graphic Designer III form as a PDF and send it in snail mail! Indeed, it is clunky. Thank you for your reply.
I tested and placed on 3 lists I’ve been on a few interviews this April. I’m getting a little concerned maybe I didn’t place high enough on the list? I passed office tech, office assist general and motor vehicle rep. Any advice?

Update: Thank you Kent for all of your help! After a coaching session with Kent, I was able to revise my SOQ and have been offered a permanent SSMI position with the state. It takes awhile for the state hiring process to unfold, but don’t give up! Wishing everyone the best on your individual job hunts 😊.
I’m in the middle of an exam and it asks to rate years of experience for different components and then to put a reference for the job where that experience aligns. Most of my relevant experience is from my current job but I don’t want them to call me current boss since that can ruin my current job. Should I just put HRs phone number for them to confirm my employment?
Great video, I finally got an interview date, would you happen to know what type of interview questions might they ask? I got a call back for landscape maintenance worker. Thank you !
ramonahigh, congrats on receiving an invitation to interview. I'm sure you're going to do great. The best way to anticipate/predict interview questions is to review the Duty Statement (and Statement of Qualifications if applicable) that should have been provided on the job posting. Questions should be directly related to the stated job duties/tasks. Review to the point you can almost repeat word-for-word the duties and tasks starting at the top of the list and working your way down. Try to think of times in your past experience and education where you've done the exact or very similar duties and tasks. This will ensure you are prepped for most any interview question you'll be asked. Coach Kent - over and out! ;-)

@Haydee Hernandez, Not ignorance just inexperience. Your exam score is good for 1 year in most cases and all agencies you apply to have access to that info. You don’t need to submit it with your application. Hope this helps. :-)
This is something I haven't had experience with so I'm going to have to check with some of my contacts in HR early next week (it's now Friday night). In the meantime, please tell me what EAD is an acronym for. Thanks!
@@calistatejobcoach it means Employment Authorization Document, basically it is a work permit that allows a foreigner to work in the US without the need for a visa. Thank you sir
Jacobo Uztariz, Good news! I reached out to one of my HR contacts at DGS and here's the answer I got to your question about whether having an EAD qualifies you to apply with jobs with the State. The answer is: "It is up to the specific hiring department and classification, but in general CalHR said that an EAD is sufficient and that proof of citizenship is not necessary for most classifications. It would be best for the applicant to reach out to the personal contact in the job advertisement to confirm." Seem like you should be "cleared for takeoff"! As suggested, reach out to the specific person listed as the Personnel Contact on each job you're going to apply to. Hope this helps! Have a great day!!
How do we get a typing certificate? All the links in calcareers and EDD do not provide facilities to take the typing test. Do the employers send us a link once we apply? Thank you.
Alex Mayoral, First, I have absolutely zero experience with taking a typing exam or managing anyone that had to. Second, that said, it looks to me like there isn't a formal exam for typing. I say that because when I check out the exam for one of the classes for which typing is a "special requirement" - in this case Office Assistant (Typing) (see this URL or link www.calcareers.ca.gov/JOBSGEN/0PBDB.PDF), it only lists the following as covered on the exam: This examination consists of the following components: Multiple Choice Written Examination - Weighted 100% of the final score. This written examination is comprised of three sections: 1. Arithmetic Calculations 2. English Usage and Grammar 3. Sorting and Filing A final score of 70% must be attained to be placed on the eligible list. In addition to evaluating applicants’ relative knowledge, skills, and ability, as demonstrated by quality Bulletin Date: 2/28/2022 and breadth of education and/or experience, emphasis in each exam component will be measuring competitively, relative job demands, each applicant’s: Ability to: 1. Perform clerical work, including ability to spell correctly 2. Use good English 3. Make arithmetical computations 4. Operate various office machines 5. Follow oral and written directions 6. Evaluate situations accurately Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance. So, it looks to me, if you take some such online training and experience (otherwise known as a T and E) exam, and pass, you are fully qualified to apply for, interview for, and get hired into such a classification. Maybe the typing part is on the "honor system" like the rest of the T & E exam is. If I were you, and I typed somewhere in the neighborhood of the required 40 words per minute, I'd go ahead and take the applicable T & E exam, and start applying for jobs! Sorry for the long answer but I hope this is helpful. Good luck in your job hunt with the State of California. Best, Coach Kent
Hi Kent, I just got by BS degree in statsistics and am trying to apply for an entry level government job. I found one I like and I meet the minimum requirements plus I placed 95 on the respective exam, however all of my previous work experience has been various volunteer positions and college organization/club positions. Do you think I should add these positions to the employment section? The job application doesn't require an SOQ or resume, so I'm unsure of how to get my experience across if I leave the employment section blank. I am also quite new to this process so I'm seeking any advice I can get. Thank you!
A tip to you coach, blur out your personal info in these videos. You signed into your account and your home address was readily available to everyone watching
Angela Hagerman, most online educations and experience exams don't have a math exam (for example, the AGPA and SSA exams don't have a math component). In fact, I've not heard of any exams that do have a math component. Which exam/classification are you referring to?
With my interview soon approaching, I’m curious to know if I should take with me a resume and cover letter? In the job description and my interview confirmation email it does not say anything about bringing a resume in. Please help!
what does it mean when it asks for 1 year leadership experience? like where im at there arent any junior people to manage. I wouldn't be managing them anyways though if there were as a non supervisor
nachos, you're going to be have to be more specific by adding context to your question about 1 year of leadership experience. I'm not sure what you're asking about. Coach Kent
@@calistatejobcoach difference between IT specialist 1 and 2 is having one year leadership experience. IT 2 and 3 is another 1 year leadership experience. not really sure what they expect for that. it says IT specialist 3 is an "expert advisor" level position but it seems like you can get there with just a bachelors and two years of "leadership experience" whatever that means
@@dynamo3059 , thanks for providing the context. My advice would be to apply for IT Spec 1 now since you've said you have no leadership experience. Hi there. Great informative video. Thank you for that. I have a Cal Careers account, got my veteran's preference all set and it shows in my account. I have applied for 2 jobs and have emailed and sent a hardcopy of my exam application to HRSD. I still have not received a link to the exams. I have received an email from HRSD acknowledging that they have received my email submission. I also tracked the hardcopy I sent them via certified mail and it has been delivered. This all has been done at least 3 weeks ago. The certified mail I sent was received last Dec 30. Anyway, is it normal to have to wait for this long to get an exam link? I have emailed them (HRSD) again but no reply. The agency that I applied for has contacted me already but since they're not administering the exam, they couldn't help me. The exam bulletin that I have does not have a link for taking the exam. The exam application I submitted was signed with my SSN as well. I'm confident that the application I sent was done correctly. What do you suggest I do as my next step? Thank you.
Let me look into this a bit. To get me started helping you, I"ll need you to share with me what the exam was and/or classification is you need to take or position you're applying for. Please share. Thanks.
I passed the test in late 2020. Applied all 2022. Nothing. What am I doing wrong??? Are my templates an issue? How do you tailor your templates for each app?
Tyra, tailoring the templates is the easy part. It's like opening a Word document, making a few changes, and then saving it as a renamed document. It sounds to me like your issue might be the exam though. They're only active/good for a certain period of time (usually 6 months or 1 year depending on the exam). Which exam did you take? I'll look up how long they're active for once passed. Plus, you can always look up in your account profile which exams you've taken, passed, and are still active. Hope this is helpful! ;-)
I’ve been trying to take the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker but when I go to take the test, I get redirected to a “server not found” page. I’ve tried it on my desktop, laptop and my phone and I get all the same response. Any idea on why it’s not letting me? Also, must my application be submitted before the page allows me to take the exam?

Hey Kent, I have a question for you. Im a new attorney, and would like employment with the state or county. I also have multiple sclerosis (MS). I feel like I should not disclose it on the application because I would be less likely to get the interview and then the job. I know government /private agencies are not allowed to discriminate but.... So if my disability is not noticeable, would you advice someone to hold back from disclosure? Or disclose it because it would help with job placement? What are you thoughts? Thanks in advance.
Sarah, I went back and reviewed the basic State of California application that is used to apply for all state jobs and I couldn't find anywhere on the form where you have to disclose your disability so I think your question is mute. Plus, I can attest as a recently retired Hiring Manager, the State of California does not discriminate in its hiring practices. In fact, goes well out of the way to not discriminate. Please DM me if you'd like to discuss further. Of course, I'm not a lawyer or an HR expert so you might want to consult one of each if you think that's appropriate! ;-)
@@calistatejobcoach Thank you Kent. I believe it was asked in the template application area. I tired to DM you but it did not showing up on your "about" page.

Hey Coach, just wondering whether you recommend taking exams before applying to specific jobs at the state. For example, if I know I want to be hired as a Staff Services Analyst would it make sense to complete the general examination first before applying to several positions or vice-versa?
Works either way. If you're applying for SSA jobs where the posting closes today, you might want to submit the application this morning and then take the exam later today or tomorrow. If the interested posting doesn't close for a few days; then take the exam first and then apply. If you need more info, please reach out for a 10, 30, or 60 minute coaching session as needed/desired! ;-)
@Manjinder Rahal, the IT Specialist exam is the same kind of exam (Training and Experience) as the AGPA exam. You'll just be answering questions related to how much training and experience you have related to various IT functions. The exam is not timed and you can stop anywhere in the exam and it won't be scored as long as you don't submit it. I suggest you go ahead and start the exam and if you feel good about it at the end submit it. If not, don't. Hope that helps! ;-)
Erika Cortez, I haven't created the SOQ video yet so there is no access to it. As to the SOQ though, just follow the directions in the job posting. Departments use the SOQ to weed folks out who can't write consisely or follow directions. You need to do both of those things on the SOQ as the SOQ is formally and informally known as the "first interview". Folks who don't give the SOQs for each unique position they are applying for the time and attention the SOQ deserves will never be invited to an interview. That's the bottom line. Hope this helps! Coach Kent
I appreciate the help. I’m in the process of applying for a couple of Staff Services positions and each one is requesting an SOQ. I really want to make a good impression. Thank you for your videos and guidance!
remedy, yes, there are plenty of jobs with the State of California that don't require a college degree. You'll have to look up classifications and their education requirements in order to find the classifications that might apply. Education requirements will be clearly listed. Once you find the classifications that don't require a degree, then search on jobs with that classification. Good luck in your search! Coach Kent
Coach Kent - out! ;-)

@Aletheia.Admin.Science This is the only exam for AGPA and most other classifications. Staff Services Analyst (SSA) has a separate math exam though.

The 1-on-1 coaching I did with Coach Kent helped me immensely with all of the following:
1. The pros and cons of accepting my first position with the State of California at a lower level,
2. The culture within the State of accepting jobs but continuing to apply for higher level jobs,
3. The “best practices” around completing the Statements of Qualifications (SOQs) required for the better jobs,
4. Pros and cons of accepting jobs not within my preferred geographical location
I am grateful for Coach Kent and all the expertise he was able to offer me. 🙏
Thank you so much for showing what the exam entails - I have delayed taking the exam due to concerns/anxiety with what sort of questions/content the exam addressed (Ex: math, reading comprehension, etc). I am pleasantly surprised to see it is simply a self-graded assessment.

Chela Gonzalez, glad to hear I helped inspire you. Keep in mind I applied for about 40 jobs to get about 4 or 5 interviews, and 2 good job offers. It's somewhat of a numbers game. @@calistatejobcoach I'm having a hard time to come up with SOQ which is required by lots off job postings.. any tips?
@@a.a.9721 , thank you for the good question. I'm sure other folks were thinking similarly to you!
That said, the SOQ is probably the most important part of this multi-step process. Even more important than the exam.! Rationale: Lots of folks take and pass the requisite exams. Many fewer folks take the time to fillout/complete what is normally a 1 or 2 page Statement of Qualifications (SOQ).
As an ex-Hiring Manager, I can say that this filters out those folks unwilling to put forth the effort (or take the extra step) to complete the SOQ. Moreover, it's also a great chance to prove:
1. You can write logically and concisely, and
2. You can follow the directions in the specific job advertisement (Note: Not all SOQs are the same).

Hi,
Thank you for all the wonderful information.

This is what separates the contenders from the pretenders! ;-)
Hi Kent,
I have a question.
Yep, you need to take that exam as well.
@@calistatejobcoachThank you SO much for your response. Very helpful.
@@calistatejobcoach Thank you Kent.

You didn't mention the other ways to take the exam. I'm assuming you'd take it in person and some other way.
The AGPA exam is only offered online last I knew. :-)
Good luck in your pursuit!! ;-)

ramonahigh, congrats on receiving an invitation to interview. Second, and to address the SOQ question, I haven't done that video yet but the following is the SOQ "low down".

- As an ex-Hiring Manager, I can say that this filters out those folks unwilling to put forth the effort (or take the extra step) to complete the SOQ. Moreover, it's also a great chance to prove:
1. You can write logically and concisely, and
2. You can follow the directions in the specific job advertisement (Note: Not all SOQs are the same).

How do we get a typing certificate? All the links in calcareers and EDD do not provide facilities to take the typing test. Do the employers send us a link once we apply? Thank you.
Alex Mayoral,
First, I have absolutely zero experience with taking a typing exam or managing anyone that had to.
Second, that said, it looks to me like there isn't a formal exam for typing. I say that because when I check out the exam for one of the classes for which typing is a "special requirement" - in this case Office Assistant (Typing) (see this URL or link www.calcareers.ca.gov/JOBSGEN/0PBDB.PDF), it only lists the following as covered on the exam:
This examination consists of the following components:
Multiple Choice Written Examination - Weighted 100% of the final score.
This written examination is comprised of three sections:
1. Arithmetic Calculations
2. English Usage and Grammar
3. Sorting and Filing
A final score of 70% must be attained to be placed on the eligible list. In addition to
evaluating applicants’ relative knowledge, skills, and ability, as demonstrated by quality
Bulletin Date: 2/28/2022
and breadth of education and/or experience, emphasis in each exam component will
be measuring competitively, relative job demands, each applicant’s:
Ability to:
1. Perform clerical work, including ability to spell correctly
2. Use good English
3. Make arithmetical computations
4. Operate various office machines
5. Follow oral and written directions
6. Evaluate situations accurately
Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance.

Works either way. If you're applying for SSA jobs where the posting closes today, you might want to submit the application this morning and then take the exam later today or tomorrow. If the interested posting doesn't close for a few days; then take the exam first and then apply. If you need more info, please reach out for a 10, 30, or 60 minute coaching session as needed/desired! ;-)
@@calistatejobcoach god bless you coach, you may be hearing from me soon!
Hi,
Im going to take exam for IT specialist 1. Will you please give me some views like what type of exam is this ?
@Manjinder Rahal, the IT Specialist exam is the same kind of exam (Training and Experience) as the AGPA exam. You'll just be answering questions related to how much training and experience you have related to various IT functions. The exam is not timed and you can stop anywhere in the exam and it won't be scored as long as you don't submit it. I suggest you go ahead and start the exam and if you feel good about it at the end submit it. If not, don't. Hope that helps! ;-)
Is there access to the SOQ video?
Is there any jobs I can apply for since I don't have any degree or anything like that??really want a state job.
remedy, yes, there are plenty of jobs with the State of California that don't require a college degree. You'll have to look up classifications and their education requirements in order to find the classifications that might apply. Education requirements will be clearly listed. Once you find the classifications that don't require a degree, then search on jobs with that classification. Good luck in your search! Coach Kent
