  • Morio Higaonna, 東恩納 盛男, head of the Traditional Okinawa Goju Ryu Karate Do Federation (TOGKF), and an Intangible Cultural Asset Holder in the Field of Okinawan Karate and Martial Arts with Weaponry.
Once described as "the most dangerous man in Japan in a real fight" he is known for his extremely tough training and body conditioning. He is one of the elder statesmen in karate around the world, and is pushing for Okinawan karate to be recognized by UNESCO. The interview took place at his dojo in Okinawa, Japan a couple of days before his 84th birthday.
Sensei: Masters of Okinawan Karate is a crowd-funded documentary series about the amazing martial arts teachers living on Okinawa, the birthplace of karate. It is completely free to watch on RUclips. Learn more about the project here and how you can help here:
    travel67.com/t...
    GOALS OF THE SERIES
    1. Document the stories of Okinawan karate masters and their philosophy on life and their martial arts practice.
    2. Record in the highest quality possible. Ideally 4K or 8K, RAW, multi camera, multi audio
    3. Store the original data as an archival record.
    4. Transcribe and translate the recordings to spread knowledge of Okinawan martial arts, history and culture.
    5. Make the videos available for free online via RUclips, and on Bujin.tv so that anyone, anywhere can see them.
The documentary series grew out of the Karate Masters Portrait Project which began in 2012. The portrait project allowed amazing access to the sensei, but it was only Chris Willson and James Pankiewicz who got to hear their stories. The documentary series is a way for us to share that unique knowledge with the international karate community.

Sensei Higaonna, nice to see you are still going strong all these years later. It was an honor and privilege to train and test for Sandan with you in Fort Smith, Arkansas back in 1998. Antonio Madamba was my Sensei in Orlando, FL. Take care Sensei from Mike Iglesias

I had the pleasure of training with Sensei Hiagaonna several times over the years and one or two things always stood out about this remarkable man. His humility and good nature sometimes overshadowed his strength and speed. That is until he grabbed you. Then you could feel the raw power as he pushed and pulled you and I was by no means a small man. Also, his fingernails were filed in the shape of almonds, so that after he gripped your arm, you had no desire to pull back because you could feel his nails digging into your skin. His hands really were like lumps of concrete and every part of his hand had been conditioned over decades of training, the backs of his fingers, his palms, the back of his hand, the edges, and even his fingertips had callouses. He really did train for 1 punch/1 strike effectiveness. I think he was one of the few Karate-ka in the world that could most probably strike any part of your body and do some real damage. Well if you were hit with a lump hammer on any part of your body it would hurt anywhere it struck. He trained in the old Okinawa way but added his own unique way of doing things, going for runs every day and shoulder charging into walls and trees and doing forward rolls on the floor every now and then. Speed and raw strength were the hallmarks of his Goju ryu and I say his Goju ryu deliberately because I think he eventually changed the style to suit his body type and personality so it became something slightly different. He had the face, the smile of an angel, and the hands of a devil. A once-in-a-lifetime individual.

I am fascinated by his huge hands and wrists, and by the calluses due to the insane amount of conditioning. Truly amazing. I wonder if he lost mobility or had arthritis problems due to this training
