YES! I remember (just lol) quite a few wild night at The Love Inn. One in particular I was tripping on LSD and somehow ended up sitting in the beer garden with a very large hotdog for company despite having no intention of eating the thing... Gawd knows how long I must have sat there just staring at the bloody thing ! 😵💫😹 Oh and the mirror in the lady's toilet I was scared to look in because I looked green in it hihihi😁 Good Times!
We had a contest there one night with another band to see who could stomp the biggest hole through the rotten floor of the stage there. By the end of the night whoever stood centre stage would just sag into this abyss underneath them that had opened up. Eventually I am sure, the threadbare carpet that held everything up would have given way and some unfortunate would have plummeted into the underworld I am sure. I also broke my arm there one night slam dancing.
Excellent! My band were supposed to be in this, but since we werent, I never kept my VHS copy. The guy who made this doco (Lee something) was our sound guy at the time. Would love a better quality version if in any way possible.
Yeah kludo1, I agree. And didn't they make a brilliant place out of such a crap situation. The argument of if Punk began in New York or London is obsolete. It ignores Brisbane and many other cities worldwide. With band forming like the Saints, Leftovers. Razar and Young Identities, way back from the mid 1970's Brisbane must been seen as just as important as any other city. Totally brilliant origional bands. And I say this even tho I've never been to Brisbane in my Life. Brilliant stuff.
Brisbane is a city that habitually destroys itself, builds over it and then re-writes history to suit. They named a bridge after the Go-Betweens, trying to co opt their legacy, and couldn't even spell the band's name right.
Wild times for sure - its a pity we were so slack about documenting it - almost nothing from the mid-late '70s ie punk era - "task force" era. Great to see 1988 leftovers tho'.
The things that were fucked about Brisbane in the 70's and 80's are also the very things that made it such a great breeding ground for subculture and home grown counter culture. Brisbane was utterly unique as a State within itself ... the Deep North and a virtual Police State run by a Banana Republic Dictator for decades - what more could a budding artist want? No need to go to Berlin to be hip and feel the tensions of Cold War Political oppression ... Brisbane had all that but in a Sunny Climate! Brisbane is absolutely a Punk Rock capital of the world ... for the reasons underlined. What other City had Police State thuggery on the level that Brisbane had in the 70's and 80's? New York didn't ... nor did London ... Nick Cave need have only moved to Brisbane if he wanted to feel the heat - Berlin was simply miserable, it wasn't a threat to your very freedom of expression however!
Was a weird place to grow up in the oppressive grip of the corrupt Bjelke Petersen regime...but boy it created an utterly unique underground music scene.
Brisbane at that time was still full of incredibly conservative narrow-minded people and values so I get the negative outlook. Anyone who was young and creative and a bit "different" had to put up with alot of shit fom an environment still heavily influenced by the Jo Bjelke Peterson years. I guess that drove the bands to make such great interesting music.
Well i don't know what there on about? I put my boots on in Circa 85 & walked into the Landsoffice, the punks took me under there wing. There was also the Tresurauy where the metalheads drank. I saw heaps of band's there & also East Leagues Club. The scene just seemed to grow, sure, Brisbane was territorial & there where a lot of fights but mostly with beefhead footyheads who wanted to bash a punk, they bit off more than they could chew because we looked after our own. Anyone remember market days? Great Times & great friends & great bands from Insane Hombres, Mystery of sixes (Dream Killers) A.I.M., Berserk Surgeons, Crucified Truth, Rampant Scabies, Big bonging baby, Bad Ronald (Blow Hard). Anyone remember the boat cruises? Fuck'in Great Man! Made heaps of mate's, some still to this day! I'm a Brisbane 80's punk & proud of it! Fuck it was a great!! Actually in 1989 the Sunday Mail did an article on the Brisbane subculture/underground scene and im proud to say that i had my ugly mug printed in the paper along with Big Phil Robbins..The punk picnic's were great, we had a footy game Carnivore's Vs Vego's we used a goonie bladder as a ball, it was more of a pile on than anything, once families in the park realized we were no threat & just hav'in fun THEY gave us a ball & stood around laughing & taking photos. In the city we would charge tourist's $1:00 a photo, you could buy a large bottle of cider for a $1:00! CHEERS.. L.H.F. (Louder Harder Faster)..
I've just posted a comment under the full documentary and I was at the actual gig of The Mystery of the Sixes shown in the footage and have a few photos of the occasion. One I can picture particularly vividly as it's of a skinhead on the ground laughing after just having had a beer bottle smashed over his forehead (bleeding? eh, so what?!) All in good fun, no aggression whatsoever.. Oh and Psymon (Simon) (drummer of the Insane Hombres) lived up the road and him and his housemates were friends of my brother's. Used to go up to visit them on the regular in 1986 and vice versa. I'll never forget the countless empty bottles of Jim Beam they had high up on a ledge throughout the entire lounge room and basically everywhere you looked lol.. 🤢 the smell of that stuff alone! Although not as bad as feckin Bundaberg Rum smh.. 🤮 Ah, the good old days! 😆 *Cheers* 🍻 Hope you are doing well and still enjoying the music! 💜 P.S I still have a single of Mystery of the Sixes with that great old singalong "Methadone Slave"on the B-side lol
There were a number of people to learn and get help from , most bands had their heads too far up their arses to look. Ed and the Saints were the exception.
Your joking right? Typical black skivy view of life from dreary, tired old melbourne. Rolling Stone Magazine last year placed Brisbane in the top 5 world cities for locally produced music. This hardly surprises when you look at recent successes like The Veronicas, Powderfinger, Pete Murray, Savage Garden, George etc. Frankly the Fortitude Valley live music precinct craps on anywhere else in Australia - from a great height.
As a Brisvegas person, this stuff is incredibly important to me. Great bands, great music and we had to work hard at alternative music.
The Refectory, The Cement Box, Johny Grays Disco , Nights, The Underground, ALT venues in Bris in the 80"s go out 3 nights a week what a buzz.
remember st lucia campas ?
@@markrice1048 I'm sure that was the Cement Box Theatre at St Lucea.
Yep remember those venues well... used to be Wednesday night at the Underground, Friday night anywhere lol
The Saints were Brisbane-rough and laid back at the same time. Loved them-love the city
I've been to Brisbane, 1989, saw Died Pretty.
Great place!
An interesting subject, thoughtfully told. Thanks for posting this!
Anyone remember The Love Inn in the Valley? The beer garden always stunk of vomit. Many good late nights spent there.

I've got this on VHS somewhere still - taped it off Rock Arena when it was broadcast. Thanks for posting - interesting stuff.

The Saints. That's all. 🎯
7:17 sounds good were The Leftovers a 1988 band or a band from the 1970s?
Brisbane was a musical utopian dream compared to Bundaberg!
kewl
Interesting video - Gene Brisbane

Most likely for sure these days , but late 70s and early 80s it was Melb def for the music scene.
haha 'Cigarettes & Alcohol'...maybe this is where Noel Gallagher got the name from...
Dream KIllers insaine homres crucified trueth
jason sha/ All great 80's punk bands. Had a great time slamming/skanking & stage diving! East Leagues Club..
sound level sux.
7:30 This is suppose to be punk...and all he does is stand, turns around, squats something, and sings. Brisbane did suck.
Yeah, we know. That's all we used to say! Lol. Everything and everyone sucked! See, we were right! Lol.
This is pretty whingy. Negative whining doco.... My esteem for Brssy band scene just went down.
You had to be there I guess. It was better than the alternative. Disco. Lol.
