  • Beauty light is one of the hardest lighting to master because of all the skin that needs to be properly lit. Today, Joel helps you control the shadows on the faces you're capturing utilizing the beauty dish.

    Amazing, thank you so much for explaining positioning of the light source itself ...closer is better! My brain said it would wash out the color .... Looks like I have some playing to do. Thank you... You know, I've never done well photographing people ... this may change things for me ... thanks again.

    By keeping the camera sensor parallel to the subject and by keeping the main focus close to the center of the lens he also minimizes the extreme distortion that can occur at the edges of a wide lens. Also, a good high quality lens like his does not have the same distortion as a cheap lens because they build distortion control in.

    And he is using the light to create a specific look which works for his personal style, thus he doesn't need the softening that a longer lens can give to the face - in fact his style is purposely harsh in some cases. Although, in this tutorial he is using the super soft light to soften the face which negates the need for the soft compression effect of a longer lens somewhat too.

  • @BoldtCave
    @BoldtCave 12 лет назад

    When you are sculpting light that heavily sometimes it means you have to get in close with the lights which means getting in close with the camera which means a wider lens. He has showed in other videos that he uses the lens correction profiles in Photoshop and Lightroom to minimize distortion, as well as doing some tweaks in Photoshop to nude the face back into the correct shape if need be.

    I love the beauty dish. I would have thought there would have been some distortion due to the close shooting with a wide angle lens but I did not see that in the resulting images. Normally portraits are taken from further back to eliminate any wide angle distortion. I am surprised this worked as well as it did that close up.

    yes, it is possible to be shooting that close from the model at 24mm, if it's a FF Camera

    The video was an 'enlightenment' !
    The photo preview helps the best.
    What my query is really that have you photoshoped the images shown in the video or they are the orignal RAW files?
    If you have retouched them I'd really appreciate if you give a tut on that too. I think it'll help everyone,a lot!
    Thank you.

    Dear Joel, I would like to ask two question, hope you will see it:
    1) Within the beauty dish, the inner reflector is white in colour or silver?
    2) Have you tried Beauty Dish with Honeycomb Grid? Any Opinions on that?

  • @mainlymusicman
    @mainlymusicman 11 лет назад

    looks amazing. but how do you get the wall to be out of focus? or do you just blur it later.?
    i would tink the little texture differences in the wall would be a distraction, if there are any.

  • @mackidd51
    @mackidd51 12 лет назад

    thank you for the reply, how about if I use a grid, will the inner silver/white color is effecting ?

    Nope it's a body spec so you can't change it. It's called "Sync Speed" in most manuals. :)

  • @JosephSicilia
    @JosephSicilia 11 лет назад

    This is a silly comment maybe but I noticed the settings coming up with each picture and saw 250th as shutter speed. I shoot with the 5d mkiii and can not get it to sync faster than 200th and in studio with strobes thats fine and with my 7D it'll sync at 250th but is it possible to change that? I think Joel shoots with a mkii so maybe it was different in that body? Doesn't really matter since the strobes freeze the motion but just curious. Incredible video as always to Framed and Joel Grimes

  • @MrEejal
    @MrEejal 11 лет назад

    Hi!
    I love this video tutorial so much! I have some questions. What's the strobe that you used? AB800? Since you're not using a lightmeter, how do you adjust until you're getting like f7.1 or f8 setting? Thanks so much Mr Grimes!!

  • @donaldfadel2767
    @donaldfadel2767 10 лет назад +2

    I disagree that this is a "beauty dish" shot. Joel is using a BD, but if you sock it it no longer behaves like one - you now have a small round softbox. I do like results, though. No arguing with that.

    • @CodyAsh
      @CodyAsh 9 лет назад +2

      i use a sock for women to soften the edges a bit. the light is still reflecting off the center and bouncing off the edges of the dish. that's something a softbox doesn't do unless you have a giant octa that has a deflector plate. the work is awesome

    what lens are you using?? Looks like a 24-70.. I have a mark111 with a 24-70 2.8 usm11, will i get it as sharp as you at 24??? Also will this work will with up to 3 people???

    • @kenchan7133
      @kenchan7133 10 лет назад +2

      Hes using an old 24-105 f4 lens. As for shooting 3 people with this technique, you'll need to swap the beauty dish with a massive Octobox (at least 150cm). I'm going to ignore your query about the comparative sharpness of your lens as I'm amazed you bought this crazy expensive lens without knowing its optical qualities.

    • @willjones3111
      @willjones3111 10 лет назад +2

      ken I didnt think it was that expensive to begin with because quality does cost. For most of my shooting I use the 24-70 so I haven't squandered on glass I don't use.. I am waiting on canon to bring out a 14-24 but it isn't out yet. Renting other prime L glass allows me to find what works but for now I love the 24-70.

    I don't really understand why you shoot portraits wtith a 24mm :/
    does'nt it distort the face and proportions?
    not that I don't like the shots you take, but it is what I have been taught for years. longer lens for portrait to compress features and retain a natural look. or have teachers been teaching me wrong things? :p
    enlighten me! :p
