Holy sheet.......look at the height of those guard rails!!! I live in Michigan where he have the Mackinaw Bridge - 5-mile long suspensio bridge 200-foot above the water. Years ago a lady in a tiny compact car literally got blown off the thing in some high winds. No way could I drive across this thing. Bridges have always bothered me and it's gotten worse as I've gotten older.
Unfortunately video doesn't capture the full effect of the steep height of the bridge. You feel it in your body, not unlike a steep roller coaster drop and at the top viewing nothing but sky on incline. I'm 66 and have had nightmares about crossing this bridge since I was a kid.
Fifty two years old here and we used to traverse this bridge on a Simi regular basis. I too had nightmares about this bridge. Mostly crossing it by foot and instead of pavement, it was decked with rotting boards. (Many of which were missing) Remember how those two lanes were once "two way traffic"? The newer sister bridge opened the older bridge up to one way traffic. I remember my mom once reading in the paper how the Rainbow Bridge was going through safety inspections and (half jokingly) stated that "it was probably a guy in a flat-bottom boat, tapping the legs with a hammer to see if they sounded right. "
@@Pynaegan As an adult the husband and I would occasionally go over this bridge (though I begged him not to) and I still had anxiety attacks because he was driving a standard truck--in traffic--on this incline. I now live in a small town on outskirts of Seattle. I've been a passenger with friends driving in Seattle after ferrying across and have to say that getting off the ferry to get on I-5 they have to drive up some very steep hills, reminding me of Rainbow. I have never driven in Seattle, never will. Yes, I remember the two way traffic before the sister bridge. 🤥
I remember when I first saw that bridge back in 2001 from the distance and I was like hell no let me turn around. Kept going. This video doesn’t really do it justice.
The old Nice bridge from Maryland into Virginia is an old steep, two lane road with no shoulders. However, a new four lane span is currently under construction.
Oh god I have fear of heights and had to cross a bridge like that over the Mississippi from Illinois to St. Louis. It kept going up and up and up and when I got near the top I couldn't see down the other side, it looked like I was going to be launched out into open air. I put my flashers on and slowed to a crawl, annoying all the other drivers that were flying past at 80mph haha but I didn't care. It was just so scary.
@@t-rose3578the bridge to the left of this video is the one he was talking about, the rainbow bridge it was used for incoming and outgoing traffic and it’s a very narrow 2 lane bridge with no sides, so u had no safe way to avoid a crash or a stalled car which happened often cuz when u get to the middle u fell ur engine struggling 2 make it to the top, ppl did stall a lot until the bridge he’s on now the veterans memorial bridge was built. The bridge city bridge was the only way in and out of town.. Janis Joplin and her friends use to climb below the rainbow bridge and hangout.
Yeah, I think other than the height, you have 2 lanes without any shoulders. On one side, you have traffic, and on the other, you have a guard rail and visible increasing height. It can be anxiety inducing.
No not really... Maybe a foot taller. That 1 there isn't as much panic as this one is. But it's still scary especially when you're looking across that the other bridges supports. Almost makes you think you're in an airplane or something
Brave man Been driving for years and bridges didn’t bother me at first but as years go by I’ve grown a fear of taking the semi over certain bridges for some reason
Exactly where is this bridge located in Texas? It's scary because it's a very narrow two lane bridge. If I had to, I'd probably cross it, but only if I had to.
I never knew about this bridge (or apparently others in Texas) but I have, for most of my adult life, had recurring dreams of taking trips to Texas (where I’ve never been) and getting freaked out on steep up roads.
For maximum effect you have to go across during a squall while pulling an empty 53' dry box....buckle up. Besides, it has a solid road deck unlike a lot of causeways. No wind whistling up from below the vehicle.
I live near this bridge i commute ove r this all the time i've most likey went over it over 200 times its not that scary anymore and i slightley enjoy it
YOU KNOW THOSE DASH-PROTECTOR THINGS THEY SELL. IT GOES UNDERNEATH THE WINDSHIELD AND BLOCKS ALL THE LIGHT - I HAVE ONE THAT I PUT OVER MY WINDSHIELD WHEN I CROSS THIS BRIDGE, YOU CAN'T SEE NOTHING, THUS THE BRIDGE NEVER SCARES YOU - SEE HOW EASY THAT WAS - GLAD I COULD HELP - AND REMEMBER *DRIVE SAFE!!!!!!!*
Scary? I remember back in the 90s construction was going on on the bridge i drove for Transit Mix we had to back up the bridge on the Port Arthur side to the Bridge City side and you could feel that concrete trying to pull you down once you started backing down, it had holes in the bridge they had steel plate covering some of the holes and your talking about Scary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some of the Drivers Quit!!!!!! They said there wasnt doing it!!!!!!!!!
Ain’t no damn way I’m going over that bridge!
😂😂 me neither
Same friend. Same.😫

I bet it's scarier in person. I'd be crying the entire time, and I would never drive over it. I'd be under the seat.
It is definitely scarier in person and I was just a passenger but I almost started crying it’s terrifying
Or in the trunk… I couldn’t do it.

I drove across that bridge many years ago. It was pouring down and I had a panic attack. Never do that again 😢
There should be an exit ramp for people with acrophobia to avoid the ridiculous height of that bridge.
Acrophobia is not a laughing matter.
In Maryland People make money driving other people's vehicles across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge because they are too scared. Now THAT is an easy job.
as someone with acrophobia, i can promise we aren’t touching this shit close enough to need one 😭🙏

That’s right where I grew up! St Mary’s Co.
Wonder where this is. That’s interesting but sounds scary.
I've been passing this bridge all my life it will never get old

Don’t blame you. I would have slowed to a crawl also.
Many years ago this was a 2 lane bridge before the new bridge was built. Many people died on this bridge back then.
How?

Used to go over it daily to work in Port Arthur..never thought too much about it being scary...but I guess it could be if you dont like heights.

Those are some seriously low railings. Does the obviously newer cable stay span in the other direction have higher railings?

It's in Port Arthur. A little over an hour east of Houston

I'm surprised it's not toll.
I drive over 2 bridges steeper then these every day. One looks similar without the steel frame.
Yeah, imagine higher and just guard rails... Astoria bridge, that'll make you shit your pants lol
What bridges?
Cool
This one not too bad compared to the one from Port Aransas going into Corpus Christi

Nice, but not the Mackinac.
The skyway
Oh yea, this is a long bridge I haven’t seen
I cannot drive over bridges like that, I have to look only at the road, or I get weirded out.

Thoughts and prayers.
Not everything is bigger in texas
