Hope you are all as excited as I am for the Gladiators revival in January! Thought this would be a fun video to do to close out the year. Hoping 2024 is going to be a good year for the channel - lots of things in the pipeline - it's going to be a busy year for me! It would be amazing if you could subscribe to the channel and give it a little thumbs up. Let's try to get to 500 by the end of the year :) Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone. See you in 2024! 😁
I’m glad they’ve used the aesthetic’s of the original arena from the classic run, (the Birmingham stadium layout). Looking forward to the Gladiators reboot since it was one first shows I started watching during the early till late 90s, when it’s airing I’m hoping that’ll encourage other broadcasters to start making big entertainment programmes just like it. Personally I wish that Robot Wars was still on, having both 90s programmes back on at the same time would make television today a bit more appealing than it is. Great work on the content.
Awesome content! Thanks for crediting the footage ... it really was an awesome day. I have a feeling gladiators 2024 will not disappoint! True to the original, great presenters and awesome gladiators!
Really looking forward to it! Was disappointed not to be able to go to the live recordings earlier in the year, but will definitely look to go for the next series. Thanks again!
It was all about watching TV as a family on a Saturday night when Gladiators ran originally, I think times have changed too much for it to be a huge success. Saying that, I'd love it to be a big hit as I have really fornd memories of TV from the era, going into school talking with mates about what had went on in our favourite shows etc. I haven't a clue what kids talk about these days, video games and Jake Paul? Another great video!
Bradley also took part in a celebrity special in 1997 alongside the likes of Mr Motivator and the late Mark Speight. There was a funny segment he was involved in before sumo ball.
The BBC has been so cagey about a start date for the 'Autumn 2023' (now 2024) season, so this video was really helpful. Many thanks for the lowdown and on what to expect :-)
@joelmurphy8177 yeah it is for new gladiators fans and older fans like us. My favourite gladiators are Apollo Bionic Dynamite and Fire. My least favourite is legend
6:13 Given the structure of the format being talked about, I imagine that they will use the fastest non-winning eliminator time as the used to in the original series to determine the extra participant in the quater and semi-finals
I managed to see The Edge in action, if anyone wants to know... . . . . A platform of mesh-shaped walkways is lifted above the arena with a safety net below, the contender has to cross as many times as possible (like classic Hit + Run) while trying not to fall through the holes in the walkway, while the gladiator is trying to make them fall (and avoid falling themselves!)
Coincidentally Australia are having a new series of Gladiators, broadcasting around the same time as our series, you know what that could mean? Gladiators The Ashes 3?!
Now THAT is the biggest trick they missed back in the 00s...at the time the US, Australia and ourselves had bought Gladiators back, could have had a perfectly good international tournament but in the end we didn't even get Ashes 3 so I'm not holding my breath on international action this time around. Let's see how both our(and the Aussie) domestic series goes first.
I had tickets for filming but they decided to change the timings at very short notice and I wasn't able to attend. People who were still able to go had very positive things to say about it all the same, and I'm generally optimistic about the series.
@@Vader535 Pyramid had a lot of pretty severe injuries and needed to be a permanent fixture in the studio, so I'm not surprised that wasn't brought back.
In primary school in about 1994 my best mate's parents took him and his sister up to watch Gladiators being filmed in the Birmingham NIA. When he got back I was so jealous, I was like "how was it you jammy prick" and he said "meh it was OK but the men's game would last 1 minute then it was a 10 minute wait for the women's game which lasted 1 minute then it was a 45 minute wait while the crew set up the next game... the day was a bit long and boring to be honest"
@@Camberwell86 Mate, this was exactly it. We got taken to this and you have to wait for ages whilst they set up. It was long and tedious. You didn’t miss out trust me.
Have to admit I'm not as hyped for this incarnation of Gladiators as I was for the late 00s incarnation. It may not have lasted very long but I did find it a lot of fun, particularly the "Legends special" which put the 90s Glads in the contender role against the 00s Glads. They certainly won't be able to repeat that trick this time around! Have to say that after the 00s series fizzled out, I was surprised anyone, particularly the BBC thought that the show would be worth bringing back in the 2020s. Still, it's coming and as long as it doesn't clash with anything else, I'll give it a look see.
I can’t wait to see Gladiators BACK on Saturday night television at the new arena home in Sheffield Arena in the new channel home on BBC One in January 2024 for the first time in 24 years in terrestrial television since the last ever episode of the original series on Gladiators came to an end in the old channel home on ITV on the 1st January 2000 filmed at the old arena home in National Indoor Arena, Birmingham (now Utilita Arena Birmingham since the 15th April 2020 in the present). Gladiators in the reboot series on BBC One will always look good as the original series on ITV and better than the failed reboot series on Sky.
Another good, detailed guide 👍 The Pyramid was my favourite game from the original also. I liked the idea of Joust, but it almost always seemed to end in a draw and became a bit predictable. The Atlaspheres game derived from the original American Gladiators which used a far smaller arena than both Birmingham's and Sheffield's, so it's possible for the game to return but I agree, like you say, not probable. I'm interested to see how it does. I think the first remake went too crazy with the production: the constant flashing lights, the odd camera angles etc. The original had some 'flashiness' but focussed on the games and didn't try to artificially add to the action. But, ultimately, I know this isn't made for me and my personal nostalgia so I'll try to keep an open mind. 👍
i think the problem with the 2008 revival was that it felt tiny, it felt like it was in a studio with an audience of a few hundred - it was the first thing i noticed at the time and a big part of why i just wasn't grabbed by it. The new one is definitely a bit smaller than the original if you look for it, but it does a much better job of hiding it. I wonder if they might move back to a bigger arena if this one's a hit
To be honest, this reboot of gladiators will be a great show, i watched the first episode and im going to be honest. i dont see it being axed any time soon.
This was amazing, bloody loved the reboot, proper clued to it, my son was like go on. He's already got his favourite Gladiator, Viper. Will be watching tomorrow.
Just shame a few OG Glads are not part of this would love yo see wolf, hunter and Jet involved somehow and start the first episode with john anderson for the memories
Having seen the premier, I thought it was great. Bradley and Barney did a great job. I'm looking forward to seeing Viper step into Wolf's shoes and Legend also does a good job as a heel. I do feel the male gladiators were much tougher relative to the competion than the female ones, but we'll see how that plays out.
I eally hope the series returns to Birmingham eventually. More space for more games and on a grander scale in general. If the first series does well maybe they'll go bigger for the second. I used to work at the Utilita arena and i'd jump straight back into that work if the Gladiators returned there
I was just thinking about this today that it would be great if they returned to Birmingham for future series. Wouldn't mind a bit of John Fashanu screaming Awooga!! as well!
Main problem with the Sky reboot was deciding to make it inside a tiny studio! You need a large arena. It felt too small. Ian Wright and Kirsty Gallacher were great choices for presenter tho - not sure Bradley Walsh and his son (?!) will be as good. The new BBC one seems to be a direct continuation of the 90s one in tone and look. I’m looking forward to it.
the one thing i think the sky reboot did right was the use of water cause a lot of the more serious injuries from the 90s series were from just landing badly in those mats
Arguably my favourite Gladiators from the 2024 REBORN version are Fire and Fury and Apollo Phantom Sabre and Dynamite and Viper and Steel but I also like Diamond and Nitro and Bionic
I was at the 3rd quarter-final recording. To fill the extra spaces, they used the fastest Eliminator time for the losers to see who got through to make up the final spot.
Atlasphere could still work in that arena. The American Gladiators arena from the 90's was very small compared to NIA and the new arena in sheffield and they still were able to play Atlasphere there.
If the BBC treat this like they treated the Robot Wars reboot (another 90s classic competition) by shunting it to awkward timeslots, against big ratings draws, I wouldn't get too attached.
@@smithyblue Agreed. The production company can be as all-in on the project as you like (as Mentorn Media were/are with Robot Wars - See Mech+, their free streaming platform) but if the broadcaster doesn't steward the show they're given, it won't last long.
I've not seen anything online about any of the classic Gladiators returning. Sure many of them are well past their prime however I know Wolf, AKA Michael Van, was saying he wanted to come back in some capacity and claimed that due to his greater dedication to training and personal fitness since he left the show, he was actually in better shape and physically stronger than he was 30-years ago and looking at the absolute rock solid muscle he was supporting in the video footage I saw last year I think he might be telling the truth. Do I think he and any others should be a regular Gladiators? No, unfortunately it would be somewhat awkward and would ruin the idea of the Gladiators as being supreme athletes in their prime. That said, a way to include him and any other classic Gladiators who wanted to come back would be to save them for a special appearance at the Grand Final where if they would go up against the contestants in a single event, one they has exclusively been training and preparing for. Another option would be if the show was popular enough to launch 2 spin off shows, one for kids under 12, where some of the gladiators would need to be occasionally replaced when they age out. And a second show for 60+ giving a great opportunity for the older members of the public to compete in and allow some of the classic gladiators to come back along with finding new older ones. But those are just my thoughts for the future.
I have to admit, the smaller arena definitely doesn't have that epic feel of the original. I think they should have used the Manchester Arena if possible. They certainly would have filled all 21,000 seats as literal hordes of hopeful audience members had to be turned away when filming as there wasn't capacity.
So far in the Aussie revival, we've had four heats in 4 days. ALL FOUR have played Duel, Powerball, The Wall and Pyramid. Not always in that order, bu no other games have been played except the Eliminator. I find that boring.
