I read "Breakfast at Tiffany's" once and don't remember if I liked it or not. Even as a die-hard Audrey Hepburn fan, I understand the criticisms and disconnect of casting her to be Holly Golightly as depicted in the book. As text independent of its source material, though, what her screen presence and offscreen persona lent to a character like that... prototypical manic dream pixie girl helped habituate audiences to the idea that a woman who monetizes her company can be the last person you'd imagine would do so (on purpose and effectively?...except not really cause she shoves her cat out of a cab and catches feels for a man).

I agree that hotness saves the film adaption of A Street Car Named Desire, but I find Vivian Leigh’s beauty is the most captivating (though Marlon Brando is gorgeous) as she was a goddess. I do enjoy the play as I’ve performed in it, but I agree that hotness saved the character’s flaws from being more apparent due to pretty privilege. Love you Lily! Proud of my queen ❤️

I had to read Heart of Darkness in uni and we had to write a term paper on it. I can sum this experience up by quoting the book: The horror! The horror!
I lost my sanity while working on that term paper. In it I started rambling about the book The Beach by Alex Garland and I almost claimed that two of the characters were gay because I listened to the song "What Sarah Said" by Death Cab for Cutie while writing the stupid term paper. In the song there is a line that says that love is watching someone die and if I remember it correctly one guy was watching another guy die in HoD.

Lily, I just read “Gone to see the River Man” upon your recommendation and mainly due to morbid curiosity on how well you pitched it. Must I say I was not expecting the twist and was quite grossed out by the development of the story. My stomach churned at the flashback scenes, this was quite literally the most “f**cked up” book I have read to date.
Also to add the ending made sense to me and was expected when I had read it, due to the revelation of the protagonist. Scarily enough there are women in this day and age who idolise serial killers, so I couldn’t help but feel like it was real whilst reading it. Maybe the events leading up to the ending was a metaphor as well as self enlightenment for the protagonist.
All in all, I agree with Lily.. if you have the stomach to read this and can handle the dark themes of this book I’d give it a go!

I really like Jekyll and Hyde but I also read it because I wanted to see the source material of the story (which I'd already seen a couple adaptations off, including the one in the show Once Upon a Time).
You might've felt it's a miss because it's a children's classic. It does read like a children's book to me, especially one of those older ones. Had I expected an adult book it would've been a miss too.
I've completed Tokyo Ghoul and I do think it was worth it, more or less. Except the half open ending is a cliff hanger and the sequel series starts off weak (it did get better and more adult even though still labeled older teen) and the ending was kinda rushed because the author was ready to move on and it shows in Tokyo Ghoul: RE vol 16. It should've been 2 volumes but I'm just glad the story ended in a decent way.
I don't know what your taste is very well, both fiction and manga but I personally enjoyed the manga Platinum End quite a bit. It has a bit of adult content in it but reads a bit more on the YA end because of the age of most of the main characters. The ending though, satisfying but also both what I did and didn't want and really sad in ways. I expected wholesome in a different way.
And I still don't know if I should read Benjamin Button now. I really liked the movie (don't really know if it holds up since I watched it quite a while ago) but I just realized the story is written by the brain that created the most boring story in existence: The Great Gatsby. I tried every format under the sun, first because we had to go to a mandatory play for school and watched the movie beforehand in English class. Not even a great group of play actors could make that one interesting or fun to watch. And did a formidable job in other years with: One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Picture of Dorian Grey, and A Christmas Carol (to this day the best adaptation I've seen and I've seen quite a few).
Anyway, I tried reading the Great Gatsby years later and listened to the audio book and it's still sleep inducingly boring. If the only interesting scene in a story is the one where a pregnant lady gets hit by a car there's something wrong. And just because it portrays the opulence of the time well doesn't make it a good book. I've seen that element done a lot better as well.
As for Benjamin Button: I just am not sure I should consume another written story from the same author. I don't think his very readable writing style is going to be less boring just because the story is more interesting.

I love Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but I don't recommend it to people unless they're a big classics fan, so I agree with you there.
I read 7 volumes of Tokyo Ghoul last year. My interest definitely tanked hard at the midway point, so I DNF'ed it. At least you were able to see it through to the end.
I can give you a couple of short or ongoing mangas that might spark your interest:
Shadows House (ongoing, about 130-40 chapters) - It's about these "dolls" that are training to be the "faces" of the shadows in the house. Starts off kind of sweet and slice of life, but slowly gets more insidious.
The Ghost and the Lady (2 volumes) - the life story of Florence Nightingale but with a supernatural flare.
SpyxFamily (really popular right now, 8-9 volumes currently) - It's about a spy that has to create a fake family in order to infiltrate a school where a man in an enemy organization's child goes, so he adopts a child (who he doesn't know is a telepath) and marries a woman (who he doesn't know is an assassin).

I had to read Heart of Darkness for year 12 English Extension.
Prior to this book I had never met a book I could not finish.
Prior to this book I thought that all books had something good or engaging about them.
When I tell you I despised this book, there are not enough words in English or any other language to communicate just how deeply I loathed it.
I never even finished it. I read sparknotes for the rest and felt bad for whoever wrote that sparknotes entry.
I must have read those first 10 pages a dozen times. I remember I would read a page and get to the end, have no idea what I just read, and have to go back to the top just to try and make sense of it.
I remember thinking to myself at one point, "It's only 80 pages you'll have this done in no time!"

@@LilyCReads10 as promised, here is the stuff I learned in class about Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde: the doubling was a common theme in the Victorian age, because secularism meant that the evil is now not an outside force anymore (aka satan), but it comes from within society and within each person. The Victorian people were therefore expected to manage their own evils and hide it away to play the role of a good person in society. Dr Jekyll is someone who cannot handle the societal pressure, therefore he attempts to separate his evil into another person. He separates the "hidden" evil part into its own persona (Mr Hyde = to hide). The animalistic, beastly appearance of Mr Hyde might also relate to Darwin's theory that humans descended from apes, which was a very new theory at the time and it made people scared that humans could go "back" to being apes (so a certain anxiety about the reversibility of evolution). There are also interpretations that think that Dr Jekyll is homosexual and is leading a double life to hide his sexuality etc. Okay I think that was everything, hope you enjoyed my ted talk!!
