    I've been playing gigs with the XM8500 as my vocal mic since 2006, so about 10 years now. I have three and have been through almost every abuse a bar or music venue can throw at them. All three still work like new and do the job just fine. I've also used them for studio work mic'ing guitar amps and drums. Great mic for the money. By the way, I also have a Sure SM58 that I rarely use since I've purchased these. The XM8500 has a bit brighter sound and more gain than the SM58. The only downfall is there is a slight amount of handling noise with the XM8500 compared to the SM58

      Hi, I'm just wondering about unidirectional mikes. If you throw your head back while singing shouldn't that stop the mike picking up the sound? I'm assuming it doesn't because of how it works for you and others. But it makes me wonder since you see that happening in test videos when the mike is not pointed straight at your mouth.

      I suppose distance miking is out of the question?

      Open the bottom and add some silicone it will handle exactly like the SM58

    Actually it is even more sensitive than sm58.
    In fact, it is -53db, not -70 as it is stated, what makes this mic even more desirable

    Done about 100 live band gigs with my 8500. it's a great mic. Get one!

  • @rogeliolopez2190

    The specs sheet says the xm8500 has a -70db sensitivity, however behringer is just using an older method of reporting there numbers and the xm8500 is closer to a sensitivity of -50db
    ( just imagine how much quieter than the shire sm7b the mic would be!)

    Hi, Very informative video which led me to getting the XM8500, I use it on my Ham Radio station and have been very pleased with the results from the mic, I also have the Heil-sound PR22 this XM8500 compares very well against it and is 5-6 time cheaper.....Thanks for the great video demonstration.....Best Regards Mark in UK.....

    Sound quality is great and this is exactly what we were looking for for extra mics for our podcast. We use a couple of ATR2100's into a Zoom H6 but want to be able to have guests on without breaking the budget. Looks like this would work perfectly, would u agree?
    One other unrelated question - What lapel mic are u using? We got a couple of cheap Boyas that have died and never had great sound to begin with.
    Thank you!!

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  8 лет назад +1

      This mic would definitely work as a guest mic for your podcast. As a guest mic its going to be more durable than your ATR2100s since thers no circuitry to break inside. Even if they knock it off the table they would do more damage to the floor than the mic! If you do decide to go with it, do me a favor and use the amazon link in the description when you buy.
      The lav that Im using is a Movo LV4 that I reviewed here - ruclips.net/video/1yU4CTrbFhY/видео.html. I kinda pan it in the review cause frankly its a pain in the ass to use. Its not a great quality lav and is on my short-list to replace.

    Ohmage is a key component to microphone output. Most ball unidirectional mics are 150 Ohms; check out mics such as the Shure Alto line PG48 at 600 Ohms, or the Pyle PDMIC58, also 600 Ohms. I'm referring to use as vocal mics, not necessarily as recording mics, or micing cabinets/drums on-stage, as I've yet to test them....but I will!

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  7 лет назад

      Yup, impedance is important, but generally for mics you just want to make sure its not too high. With higher impedance mics you have to make sure your mixer/interface is rated for them. The rule of thumb that Ive generally heard is input impedance on your mixer/interface should be 7-10x greater than the mic's impedance.
      The PG48 and PDMIC58 are still fine mics (600 Ohms is still low), but might be a little high for a lot of entry level gear (even some lower end pro gear). They just may pick up a little more line noise and wash out easier (overdrive the xlr input).
      This is a great primer on the subject: ruclips.net/video/Z79biXzXmkM/видео.html

      for example the phantom power would work?

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  8 лет назад +3

      You will need an audio interface of some sort. Any of the Behinger USB mixers would work (which have an interface built in) or a stand alone interface. Most interfaces will have a preamp and phantom power. You dont need phantom power (as its a dynamic mic), but a good preamp will make a huge difference since this mic is a bit gain hungry.

  • @GeoffBosco
    @GeoffBosco 5 лет назад

    Just saw a used one at my local Sam Ash for $10. Didn't know anything about it, but I figured, "Can't have too many decent dynamic mics. And, for $10, why not give it shot?"

  • @williamofockham1222
    @williamofockham1222 6 лет назад

    You are comparing apples to oranges with the sensitivity ratings. Some manufacturers rate their mics with a 94 db audio source, others at 74. The voltage output measured is then expressed in a -db value relative to 1 volt. Shure, EV and most mics are measured at 94 db. This mic, and many mics from Asia are measured with 74db sound source. You can add 20db to its rating to compare it to the Shure, putting it at -50db.

    • @williamofockham1222

      www.shure.com/americas/support/find-an-answer/how-do-i-compare-the-sensitivity-of-two-microphones
      This actually makes the Behringer 4.5db hotter than the 58. I tried one of these out recently and it was considerably hotter than the other mics we compared it too, including an Audix OM1 and a Shure Beta 57 This most likely due to the large neodymium magnet. I was also impressed by the robust construction.

    • @Taylordtech

      Really? I thought 1Pa (94Db) at 1m was the standard. Good to know.

      Taylord Tech it's the most common. The other is .1 Pa. The link in my second post explains it well.

    Hi! Thanks for your review. Very basic question, but I'm a beginner. I just bought this Mic and want to use it with Garageband. 1) What wire shall I use to connect it to the Macbook Pro, and to which jack? 2) Factoring in mind that I would like to use headphones at the same time to hear my voice, does that require any specialist multi-jack or something? Thanks a lot.

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  8 лет назад +1

      To hook this up to a PC you need an audio interface of some sort, preferably one that has a good preamp. You can go with a basic interface (Behinger UM2) or high end interface (Scarlett Solo). The Behringer Xynex mixers have the same audio interface as their stand alone interfaces if you think you might need that functionality.
      What are you going to be doing with the mic and whats your target platform?

    • @louisp2360
      @louisp2360 8 лет назад

      Thank you! It will be for my own compositions and recording me singing into it.

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  8 лет назад

      Id recommend going with a Behringer UM2 or one of their USB mixers. You can spend a little more for a nicer interface but I doubt you would notice the difference unless you are trying to record for something professional.

      1) Thank you for getting back to me again, you've earned a loyal subscriber! 2) I am now using an XLR to USB wire, but I am hearing a continuous humming and beeping when I connect it to my Garageband, and this sound is actually recorded. Also, the red light on the wire flashes on and off. This is the wire I am using: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00MFAHNNA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

      @Taylordtech  8 лет назад +1

      Those cables are kinda gimmicky, to be completely honest. They are usually cheaply made, are plagued with grounding issues, interferance, and provide a weak interface. The noise you hear could be a grounding issue, interference from other components in your laptop, or the interface built into the cable being taxed beyond what it can do.
      Get a proper interface. It will be totally worth it!

    I'm rocking this mic but it's still sleeping in the box, getting scarlett solo as audio interface soon. They should work together just fine for some youtube covers.

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  9 лет назад

      +Darko Ristanovic Yep, they should work ok together. Just keep in mind that the Scarlett only provides up to 47dbv of gain. You may find that its a little under-powered for dynamic mics in general (not tested it myself, but basing that assumption off the XM8500's -70dbv sensitivity level)

    • @darko.ristanovic
      @darko.ristanovic 9 лет назад

      +Taylor'd Tech What about scarlett 2i2? Same case?

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  9 лет назад

      Had to look at the manual, but yeah. The pre-amp is going to give -4 dBv to +46 dBv of gain. The Scarlett series is really meant to be used with studio condenser mics which typically require a lot less gain.
      If you really want to use this mic with a Scarlett you could, but you might have to add a pre-amp to give the mic enough gain.

    • @darko.ristanovic
      @darko.ristanovic 9 лет назад

      Taylor'd Tech Thanks for replies. Yeah I wanted to start with this gear, maybe later upgrade to some condenser mic. That's why I think i should go with scarlett. Maybe I can work around something in DAW also. After all, audio interface is more important at this point. I'll upgrade to some better mic later on.

    • @Taylordtech

    I love these mics and they sound as good as $100 mics but they don’t have the durability. You cant beat on them like a SM58. They can quit working if you drop them. Happened to me and a buddy. But still a great value.

    • @Radiounderground

    hi. i have got xm8500 right now.i am think about upgrading it to at2020 usb+ do you is it worth to upgrade? i know at is more professional but im still not sure.you can hear my voice in my last video. what do you think? and thanks for review +1

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  9 лет назад

      +KaraŞövalye While I dont know the language (Turkish??), your voice was clear and loud, which is good. There are a few things that might help performance wise before buying a new mic:
      - I could hear you moving closer/further from the mic. Ideally you dont want your mouth to be any further than the distance between your pinky and thumb when you stretch them out (15-25cm).
      - If you lean back/away from the mic, it will drastically change how you sound and make you really quiet. I could tell several times you sat up/away from the mic. Being consistent in mic placement (in terms of where your mouth is in relation to the mic) is important.
      - to reduce breath noises, place the mic just below your mouth (level with you chin/neck) and point is slightly upward toward your mouth so that you are talking "over" the mic
      The AT2020 will be more sensitive than the XM8500...like a LOT more sensitive. This will let you sit further from it to get the same volume level and will help with dynamics (changing volume levels) if you move around alot during streams, but it will also pick up more room noise (keyboard clicking, fans, PC noise, etc). So it might help with some of the issues you have, but it also might create other issues. Make sure your fundamentals are good before you spring for a more expensive mic.
      Just curious, what are you using to connect the XM8500 to the PC?

    • @karasovalyetr
      @karasovalyetr 9 лет назад

      im using xlr to usb cable.okay thanks do you think should i buy a pop filter? im using a windscreen.

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  9 лет назад

      +KaraŞövalye I would look at getting a better interface long before I worried about an AT2020. Even something like a Behringer UM2 (about as cheap as it gets) is going to be WORLDS better.
      If you dont want to change your mic placement, then a pop-filter would definitely help with breath noises.

    Comparing to my microphone on my Turtle Beach PX22, which microphone would be better?

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  9 лет назад

      My guess is that it would wreck it, but that's hard to say conclusively when Turtle Beach doesn't even list specs.
      If all you are doing with it is VOIP in game, you will not be able to tell a difference. If you start doing anything beyond that the XM8500 is a great deal.
      The only thing to consider is that you can't plug it into a PC as a standalone product. You need something to provide some gain and an XLR input. You can get a cheap audio interface for about $40, an XLR cable for $10, and a mic stand for $15.

    • @Nebsytv

I obviously have a XLR cable 3m long and a 3.5mm TRS adapter for my computer and when I plug it in and shake the adapter and XLR They make a static noise too. I hope you can help :)

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  8 лет назад

      +soljachygames Thats just normal background hiss. All sound signals have some level of background noise, however it should be relatively minimal to where even a slight sound washes it out.
      What kind of adapter are you using?

    • @soljachygames1223
      @soljachygames1223 8 лет назад

      Taylord Tech Well the XLR cable I have had a 1/4 inch jack then I attach a 3.5 mm jack adapter to my computer.

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  8 лет назад

      +soljachygames The 1/4" jack is going to be a mono jack. Your computer is expecting stereo. Instead you are shorting out the other channel (which is why it probably only plays on the left ear of your headset until you force it to mono).
      Honestly, your computer is not designed to have this mic directly inputted to it like that. Its too low of a level. You really need to feed it though a preamp first.

      You control backgound noise by controlling your environment first, positioning your mic well second, and finally by using a low-sensitivity mic. The XM8500 has a very low sensitivity so it would help some, but not as much as making your environment quieter or keeping the mic closer to your mouth.

      I have tried it and it does work ( at like 40% gain) and there is little to no noise. This because although the specs say the mic is -70 db in sensitivity it is actually closer to -50 db ( a bit louder than a share sm58) because behringer is using an old method of reporting there numbers.
      ( If this mic had a sensitivity of -70 db I would call my self an idiot for calling the shire sm7b quiet)

      It doesnt need phantom power as its a dynamic mic.

      Nope. Moving coil dynamic mics dont care. You do have to be careful with passive ribbon mics.

    Is there a way to make this mic wireless?

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  7 лет назад +1

      +Samuel Young there are solutions to make any mic wireless, but the cheap ones cost as much as this mic and are frankly horrible and the good ones are a few hundred dollars.

    • @rogeliolopez2190
      @rogeliolopez2190 4 года назад

      Yes, there are solutions for this however if you want a good one they will be about six times the cost of this mic( about 120 bucks plus the expense of replacing batteries) but honestly if you want to go wireless let me just warn you than wireless mics ain't cheap. If you go cheap with the wireless, the sound will be crappy. So if you can stick with a traditional xlr cable, stick with it! ( The only time I would really want wireless would be when multiple people with microphones will be actively moving a lot ( to prevent people from tripping) or if you think the cable looks bad. But if a longer cable can get the job done( then go with the cable). Hope this helped!

    Will phantom power hurt this mic?

    • @ocassionaljunkieforyou
      @ocassionaljunkieforyou 5 лет назад +1

      Phantom power will damage any mic that doesn't requires it

    • @rogeliolopez2190
      @rogeliolopez2190 4 года назад +1

      No, in fact any microphone whether it needs a phantom or not ( ribbon, Dynamic, condenser,shotgun, etc) won't get damaged with phantom power ( in fact a BBC studio has all the xlr sockets with phantom power at all times and they connect dynamics whenever they feel like it). However older mics ( and I mean old) that were wired differently would get damaged if accidentally connected to a phantom. But modern mics don't suffer from this. And yes I know that people say that ribbon mics will get fried with phantom power but that again was only to the older mics. So just as long as you don't have a vintage mic from the 70s, 60, etc phantom power won't fry or damage a mic by anyway!

      Taylord Tech if you have an XLR to 1/4 jack will it work on an amp?

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  8 лет назад

      It will be at a much lower level than your average guitar (mic level is lower than instrument level, which is lower than line level. See here: www.ovnilab.com/articles/linelevel.shtml). Also it would depend on how the XLR to 1/4 is wired (probably with pins 2 and 3 connected, which is correct. just never plug it in to anything with phantom power or youll fry it).

    this microphone has a -70dB for sensitivity. What is the equivalente in mV/Pa that all other makes are using to measure their sensitivity? also does it have high signal output like the Senheiser e835?thanks

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  8 лет назад +1

      Using this little tool (www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-transferfactor.htm), it comes out to 0.3162 mV/Pa. Its pretty dang low. Signal output is a bit low. Not enough to require a dedicated preamp, but you might be at the limit of the built-in preamps on a budget mixer.

    • @MegaAluchi
      @MegaAluchi 8 лет назад +1

      my shure sm58 has a low signal output and it is gain hungry. I use Roland Tri capture interface, and the gain is almost at full before I hear myself. It has 1.85mV/Pa, so with that Beranger what is the case?0.31 mV/pa is not possible for a dynamic mic in my opinion, right?

    3-4 People on 1 Mic for a church choir, how well it'll perform?

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  8 лет назад +2

      Not terribly well. Its a cardioid pickup pattern, so it will reject noise from the sides. As cheap as it is though, you shouldnt have too much of a problem buying one for everyone.

    • @senalgoonetilaka3374
      @senalgoonetilaka3374 8 лет назад

      Can you pls recommend a good mic for a choir that's for a low budget?

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  8 лет назад +2

      For a small choir I would recommend a multi-mic setup. No single mic is going to perform as well, regardless of price. A setup like the Behringer C2 is probably the cheapest you can go without sacrificing significant quality. Also, the C2 is a condenser mic (not a dynamic like the XM8500), so they need phantom power.
      You want the mics about an arms length from the choir. Remember when mixing that the goal of micing a choir is to reinforce their natural voices. They provide the main sound, you are just filling in the bits that dont carry well.

    • @senalgoonetilaka3374
      @senalgoonetilaka3374 8 лет назад +1

      Ya We were thinking of getting like 5 XM 8500s, there are like 15 people in our choir so 3 in 1 mic
      That would do ok right
      anyways Thanks so much for getting back to me!
